Review
"Classic Snacks Made from Scratch embraces the spirit of any good American palate with a DIY sensibility. Any home cook should approach a recipe with a sense of humor, nurture and flavor. Casey Barber teaches you all three." - Christina Tosi, Momofuku Milk Bar

"You won't be confronted with any strange molecular gastronomy experiments or hard-to-find ingredients with this collection of recipes.  Just good ol' butter, flour, and a baking sheet, for the most part. If you like a good kitchen project, this book is full of them." - Emma Christensen, The Kitchn

"Barber's book is a masterpiece of reverse engineering. She turns the highly processed, extruded, and corn-syrupy foods of our youth into snacks easily prepared in a home kitchen and almost entirely free of strange additives. (The most chemically-laced product featured in the book is dehydrated cheese powder—yes, the same neon powder you'll find in Kraft boxes.) Even if the finished snacks have a handmade look to them, the flavors are exactly what we remember."—SeriousEats.com

"Casey Barber makes a herculean effort in each recipe to mimic the exact flavors and textures that we love so dearly...if you like a good kitchen project, this book is full of them." —TheKitchn.com

Much Better Than the Original Snacks!
By Daniel F. Moore
When I read that Hostess was going out of business, I thought about the snacks that I had enjoyed as a kid. Atop the list was Hostess Orange Cupcakes and though I hadn't tasted one in years, I nevertheless lamented the 'death' of an old favorite. I bought this book based on reviews and I was shocked when I saw the the recipe for my old standby, Hostess Orange Cupcakes! I did a quick inventory of ingredients on hand and went to the grocery store to pick up the missing items. OMG..these are better than the originals! They have a more pronounced orange flavor, are more moist and don't have that boxed mix taste. Subsequently, I tried the Twinkies recipe and it too, was an upgrade over the original. I had a recipe from one of the Top Secret Recipes books that used a boxed white cake as the basis for the cakes; this one tastes homemade and that makes a big difference in the quality.
On the basis of just these two recipes, I highly recommend this book. Now, as for those Cheez-Its......

I can finally avoid the nastiness at the grocery store
By SJS
Like most Americans, I grew up eating a wide variety of things that might be considered "junk food." Twinkies, Cheeze-Its, Oreo cookies, and Doritos. As an adult, I tend to avoid these things because I want to live a healthier lifestyle and shy away from all the preservatives that are found in grocery store snacks... but that doesn't mean I don't miss these treats.

I'm so unbelievably stoked to have this book in my hands. Now I can make all the munchies I miss with a little less guilt, using ingredients in my own kitchen that I trust (way better than the insanely complicated dyes, flavorings, and preservatives packed into the original versions). The author's Oreo cookie recipe alone is worth the price of this book. Same with the Cheetos.

Great fun making snacks we all eat
By Matthew Rolak
This book is a great resource and source of entertainment in baking/cooking! We know we all eat this stuff and grew up loving at least 1 or 2 of the items (Doritos and Goldfish crackers for sure!)... now you can play with making your own versions! It's not health food or even 'healthier versions' really but that's not the point of the book. The recipes in this book are trying to be as true to the inspirational treat as can be done. And in many cases they not only hit the mark but exceed it.

I've made several of them so far and they have all been fun and easy to understand. There are helpful tips in the book on where to get a few of the more 'interesting' tools/ingredients which can really help when your local grocery store looks at you like a crazy person when you ask "Do you have any powdered cheddar cheese?"

Great format for a fun cookbook for myself and for making treats with friends or my 3 and 7 year old. Highly recommended!

Ten experts explain how to communicate clearly and persuasively, especially in stressful situations
By Robert Morris
This is one in a series of volumes that anthologizes what the editors of the Harvard Business Review consider to be the "must reads" in a given business subject area, in this instance communication. I have no quarrel with any of their selections, each of which is eminently deserving of inclusion. Were all of these article purchased separately as reprints, the total cost would be $60 and the value of any one of them exceeds that. Given the fact that Amazon now sells this one for only $14.71, that's quite a bargain. The same is true of volumes in other series such as "Harvard Business Review on...." and "Harvard Business Essentials." I also think there is great benefit derived from the convenience of having essential, basic information as well as a variety of perspectives and insights gathered in a single volume.

In all of the volumes in the "10 Must Read" series that I have read thus far, the authors and HBR editors make skillful use of several reader-friendly devices that include "Idea in Brief" and "Idea in Action" sections, checklists with and without bullet points, boxed mini-commentaries (some of which are "guest" contributions from other sources, and graphic charts and diagrams that consolidate especially valuable information. These and other devices facilitate, indeed accelerate frequent review later of key points later.

Those who read this volume will gain valuable information, insights, and counsel that will help them to pitch their brilliant idea with high-impact, connect with their audience, establish their credibility, inspire others to embrace and pursue their vision, adapt to stakeholders concerns and decision-making styles, frame goals that are supported by common interests, and build a consensus and then increase it with additional support.

Here are three brief passages that are representative of the quality of the articles from which they are excerpted as well as quality of the other seven articles in this volume.

From "Harnessing the Science of Persuasion," Robert B. Cialdini (Pages 25-42): "In the pages that follow, I describe six fundamental principles of persuasion and suggest a few ways that executives can apply them in their own organizations.

The Principle of Liking: People like those who like them.
Application: Uncover real similarities and offer genuine praise.

The Principle of Reciprocity: People Repay in kind.
Application: Give what you want to receive.

The Principle of Social Proof: People follow the lead of similar others.
Application: Use peer power whenever it's available.

The Principle of Consistency: People align with their clear commitments.
Application: Make their commitments active, public, and voluntary.

The Principle of Authority: People defer to experts.
Application: Expose your expertise; don't assume it's self-evident.

The Principle of Scarcity: People want more of that they can have less of.
Application: Highlight unique benefits and exclusive information.

From "Telling Tales," Stephen Denning (115-130): Denning provides within his article what he characterizes as "A Storytelling Catalog" of seven approaches: sparking action, communicating who you are, transmitting values, fostering collaboration, taming the grapevine, sharing knowledge, and leading people into the future. The format begins with purpose ("If your objective is..."), proceeds to the appropriate type (You will need a story that..."), indicates what is required ("In telling it, you will need..."), and suggests a probable impact ("Your story will inspire responses such as...") Decades ago while teaching English at a boarding school in New England, I formulated an acronym that may also be helpful: EDNA. That is, Exposition explains with information, Description makes vivid with compelling details e.g. "My foot's asleep and it feels like ginger ale"), Narration tells a story (plot) or explains a sequence, and Argumentation convinces with logic and/or evidence. It is certainly not a coincidence that each of the greatest leaders throughout history was a great storyteller.

From "Taking the Stress Out of Stressful Conversations," Holly Weeks" (165-180): At work, stressful conversations take various forms. Here's how to prepare for them:

"1. Be aware of your weaknesses to particular people and situations. You'll thus avoid succumbing to your feelings and ignoring your needs during a stressful conversation.

"2. Know [begin italics] how [end italics] you tend to react when feeling vulnerable. Do you bare your teeth when facing an overbearing competitor? Shut down when feeling excluded? Knowing your danger zones, you can anticipate your vulnerabilities and improve your responses.

"3. With an honest, non-judgmental friend, rehearse clear, neutral, and temperate responses to whatever comments you find most irritating. Get out everything you're thinking [begin italics] and feeling [end italics], then refine your phrasing until it best expresses your message -- in an honest, non-threatening way. Eliminate emotionally charged behaviors [e.g. tone of voice and body language]. Write down your most effective phrasings for future use."

If you read nothing else on effective communication, read these ten classic articles from Harvard Business Review.

By Aaron McClary
Harvard Business Review’s 10 Must Reads on Communication features a compendium of research-laden articles from the flagship publisher’s archives on the topic of communication in the world of business. HBR’s aggregation includes pieces pulled from across the span of a little over a decade from Deborah Tannen’s The Power of Talk originally published in 1995 to Nick Morgan’s How to Become an Authentic Speaker originally published in 2008. While the scope of authorship is relatively narrow in terms of the snapshot in time that is represented by the articles contained therein, its authors represent a wide range of professional capacities including two CEOs, six professors, a sales executive, a communications consultant, and a venture capitalist.

Four of the selected articles focus primarily on the art of communicating persuasively. These articles include Gary Williams and Robert Miller’s Change the Way You Persuade, Robert Cialdini’s Harnessing the Science of Persuasion, Jay Conger’s The Necessary Art of Persuasion, and Kimberly Elsbach’s How to Pitch A Brilliant Idea. Williams and Miller argue that “executives tend to make important decisions in predictable ways…and knowing their preferences for hearing or seeing certain types of information at specific stages in their decision-making process can substantially improve your ability to tip the outcome your way.” In essence, the takeaway is that what matters most is having the right information at the right time for the right person. As inferred by his article’s title, Cialdini writes from the perspective of psychological research which suggests that “there are six basic laws of winning friends and influencing people.” In highlighting the data, Cialdini is quick to note that psychological manipulation through communication techniques is not only inappropriate but ineffective in the long-term. “…the rules of ethics apply to the science of social influence just as they do to any other technology.” Conger’s central thesis is that times have changed and the new corporate reality is that “work today gets done in an environment where people don't just ask ‘What should I do?’ but ‘Why should I do it?’” Thus, the communication of leadership must appeal to a compelling motivator within their subordinates’ culture. Finally, Elsbach identifies three creative stereotypes—coined as artists, showrunners, and neophytes—in which “catchers” traditionally place those who are making a pitch. Elsbach highlights the reality that “Research suggests that humans can categorize others in less than 150 milliseconds. Within 30 minutes, they've made lasting judgments about your character.” As a result, persuading the adoption of one’s idea takes forethought into how to leverage the most effective stereotype for the circumstance in order to get the desired outcome. The “pitcher’s” art of communication can make or break any given proposal.

In an intriguing article highlighting the dangers of intra-organizational silence, authors Perlow and Williams espouse the need for business cultures to be marked by a high valuation of open dialogue. As the article unfolds, we read about the high cost of silence in organizations and that “behind failed products, broken processes, and mistaken decisions are people who chose to hold their tongues rather than to speak up.”

In The Power of Talk author Deborah Tannen holds that “any way of speaking could be perfect for communicating with one person in one situation and disastrous with someone else in another.” As a result, Tannen outlines various circumstances and what methods of communication might prove most effective in each.

Morgan’s How to Become an Authentic Speaker and Denning’s Telling Tales share some common ground in that they both highlight the value of appealing to people’s hearts through communication that echoes sentiments of a more personal nature. Morgan, a multi-decade communications coach, encourages readers to “Focus not on what you want to say but on why you’re giving the speech and how you feel about that.” Similarly, Denning warns communicators about the dangers of a boring message. “Analysis might excite the mind, but it hardly offers a route to the heart-and that's where we must go to motivate people.

Rounding out the collection are Weeks’ article on Taking the Stress Out of Stressful Conversations and Hamm’s The Five Messages Leaders Must Manage. In the former, Weeks points to—among many other things—the danger found in the gap between communication and intent. Oftentimes the message gets lost, on either end, when intentions fail to match up with expectations. As a result, good communicators find the right tools to address conversations with heightened tension. Finally, The Five Messages Leaders Must Manage as outlined by John Hamm are 1) organizational structure and hierarchy, 2) financial results, 3) the leader’s sense of his or her job, 4) time management, and 5) corporate culture. Hamm’s premise centers around the idea that “By recognizing the impact of clear and direct communication and seeking feedback from their teams, leaders leverage, rather than abuse, their positional power.”

All in all, HBR's 10 Must Reads on Communication is a compelling read with enough substance to engage any communicator with tools to more effectively lead and manage the delivery of key messaging to their audience. Each article, on its own, delivers substantive commentary on the art of communication. However, the real value in this collection is not only finding what works in your particular circumstance but also curating elements from within each of the articles to craft a composite that’s tailored for maximum results in your leadership context.

Review

Wabi-sabi is about appreciating the simple and letting go of the superficial – the perfect antidote for a society in recovery from a decades-long consumerist binge. In 2004 The Wabi-Sabi House helped popularize this ancient Japanese philosophy in North America. Simply Imperfect is a fully revised and updated edition of The Wabi-Sabi House, aimed at moving past our belief in life, liberty, and the pursuit of stuff to finding beauty in austerity, serenity and authenticity.

Far more than home décor, wabi-sabi is a state of mind: living modestly in the moment, stripping away the unnecessary, finding satisfaction in everyday things. Simply Imperfect recounts wabi-sabi's rich history, tracing it from its Zen Buddhist roots through to the present day. This beautifully-illustrated book reveals ways to introduce wabi-sabi into your homesuch as:

  • Clearing clutter and blocking noise
  • Integrating salvaged and recycled materials
  • Making and growing things yourself (or supporting local artisans who do)
  • Taking time and space for self-reflection.

Wabi-sabi is everything that today's sleek, plastic, technology-saturated culture isn't. Simply Imperfect asks readers to see that mass-produced perfection is seductive but boring. This gentle book is for anyone who is overwhelmed by consumerism or whose focus hasshifted from getting more to getting by.

A wabi-sabi DIY book review
By TOS
I recently learned about this book by reading Robyn Lawrence's online column: Wabi-Sabi Wednesdays in Mother Earth News. I loved the column and bought the book. If you're interested in buying this book, and want to learn more about the content, I recommend you check out her column for some excerpts.

The book starts off with an exploration and discovery of wabi-sabi in existing environments, then it moves into the history and philosophy of the wabi-sabi, the aesthetics, and the cultivation of a wabi-sabi lifestyle. One chapter, about 1/2 way through, is dedicated to reducing clutter and creating space for wabi-sabi. I found this section to be a great reminder that many of us have a difficult time with ideas like wabi-sabi because we have too much to do, we're too distracted, and we live in a cluttered world.

Ironically, I found the layout of the book to distract from the content. The main text is frequently interrupted with anecdotes, images, examples, and lists that often span more than one page and repeatedly disrupt the flow of the chapter. These disruptions become longer and more frequent as you move into the body of the book. Eventually, it feels like the anecdotes are competing with the main text, causing the reader to feel like they are being constantly interrupted by the kid with all the answers.

This is a good DIY book for creative people looking for ideas and inspiration, but not a book I'd recommend for an introspective study of wabi-sabi.

Lovely. thoughtful, real
By Harmony
I read this book cover to cover on an airplane ride from colorado to california. The philosophy and approach to living in balance was a breath of fresh air. It takes the approach of thoughtful living rather than wasteful living. In a society that has for years been about NEW and disposable this book reminds us that OLD and weathered with experience is something to be treasured and can't be bought.

Yes, as one of the other reviewers notes the photos are in black and white (well more of a sepia tint) which for me worked. It forced me to really look at the photos.... to slow down and experience them since they aren't as visually stimulating on the surface but if you look closely they are truly beautiful.

Great read, great ideas.
By Allyson Speake
After reading (and saving) an article in my Mother Earth News magazine for many months, both myself and my mother ordered this book for ourselves and as a gift for a good friend. We were so looking forward to reading more about Wabi Sabi and looking at the simple photography throughout the book. We were very disappointed that all of the photos in this book were black-and-white (which made it difficult to see the detail of rust, use, and love.) I believe it would have been much more effective had the book had colored photos throughout.
It is a good read, but don't expect beautiful colored photos like the one on the cover!

Flashy's best
By Lloyd A. Conway
The author brings several worlds to vivid life, in this novel that links several stories into a seamless whole. I personally think that Frasier missed his calling: he should have been a sportswriter. The cricket game, with poor idiot Elspeth as the prize, is told so well that I've re-read it several times. Each of the worlds he creates, Frasier fills with such colorful characters that they are three-dimensional. The cricket game brings us Deadlius Tighe, esq., a classic scoundrel; Singapore is personified in Catchick Moses; and British imperial/missionary zeal in James Brooke. (The depiction of Brooke inspired me to read everything that I could find on this fighting seaman and colonizer.) Best of all is a villan equal to Flashy himself: Sulemann Usman. The novel gives the reader the wide world, and does it in such a way as to make it seem real, as in the eyes of a 19th century mind. A keeper that brings genuine enjoyment with every re-reading. -Lloyd A. Conway

Flashy shows a spark of selflessness in spite of himself
By Mr. Joe
In the 1966 screen adaptation of A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield) advises his daughter Meg (Susannah York):

"If (God) suffers us to come to such a case that there is no escaping, then we may stand to our tackle as best we can. And, yes Meg, then we can clamor like champions, if we have the spittle for it. But it's God's part, not our own, to bring ourselves to such a pass. Our natural business lies in escaping."

One of the most endearing qualities of author George MacDonald Fraser's anti-heroic protagonist, Harry Flashman, is his natural cowardice, which he freely admits with a certain degree of pride. Flashy is an expert at escaping; More would have been impressed.

In that volume of his memoirs entitled FLASHMAN'S LADY, Flashy is still young in the mid-1840s. His talent for a prudent and precipitous departure has yet to mature, as evidenced by his delayed response when beset by thugs in a dodgy section of Singapore:

"I'm not proud of what happened in the next moment. Of course, I was very young and thoughtless, and my great days of instant flight and evasion were still ahead of me, but even so, with ... my native cowardice to boot, my reaction was inexcusable ... in my youthful folly and ignorance, I absolutely stood there gaping ..."

The larger portion of this book's plot involves the kidnapping of Flashy's beautiful but scatterbrained wife, Elspeth, by a certain Don Solomon Haslam, a moneyed and mannered member of English high society who's not what he seems. Harry's determination to stay out of harm's way is severely taxed as he pursues Elspeth's rescue into the pirate-infested interior of Borneo, and later into Madagascar, where Flashy finds himself the slave of that island's mad and despotic queen, Ranavalona.

A chief attraction of Fraser's Flashman series is the knowledge it gives the reader about historical and factual, but arcane, events and places. In FLASHMAN'S LADY, the reader is apprised of the private war against the pirates of the East Indies by the eccentric English imperialist, James Brooke, and the reign of terror perpetuated by that female Caligula of the period, Queen Ranavalona I of Madagascar. Indeed, the author's research into the latter has prompted me to place a non-fiction history of the subject on my Wish List.

Deep down, I think, Flashy's personal appeal is based on the realization that he's Everyman, whether one would wish to admit it or not. Our natural preference is to escape, and it's only through blundering circumstance, good luck, or an odd quirk of fate that any one of us might, like Harry himself, be perceived a hero by our fellows.

Flash Outshined
By Gio
Harry Flashman - despicable poltroon or modest unreliable narrator, depending on your literary whim - shows himself eclipsed by a bolder rogue and a genuine hero in the first half of this too-long novel. The bolder rogue kidnaps Harry's wife, and the genuine hero, the authentic White Rajah of Sarawak, rescues her... almost.

By far the most entertaining portion of this sixth Flashman novel is the first quarter, which features a hilarious account of cricket as played in Jolly Old England in the middle of the 19th C. Harry, naturally, is a cricket phenom, whose skill is exceeded only by his skullduggery. Then Harry find himself once more en route to hellish adventures in the colonies. His travelogue description of Singapore is worth the price of a ticket there, and in Singapore, he encounters James Brooke, the White Rajah, the Hotspur character who overshadows him for another quarter of the text.

The second half of the book is effectively another novel, one that seems thin and anticlimactic after the first. Harry gets himself imprisoned in the clutches of a madwoman-queen. Finally he escapes. Ho hum. But another side of our Flashman is revealed; he actually risks his skin to save his addlepated little wifey. How will we ever be certain again that he's as much of a coward as he boasts?

Author GM Fraser introduces an innovation in this volume; part of the story is told by Mrs. Flashman, in the form of pages from her diary. She's not the narrator her husband is.

Except for the cricket chapters, this is a less amusing Flash than the others I've read. If you're plowing your way through the life story of England's most meretricious hero, you have every right to skip an episode now and then.

The more I think about it tonight, the more uncomfortable I find myself getting over the question of whether one should laugh or vomit at Harry's racism and sexism. I begin to think I'm obliged to do both, or else give the series up.

Fraser's Continuing Brilliance
By Paul McGrath
It is unfortunate that you really can't pick up one of these Flashman novels without seeing the words, "bawdy," or "sexy," or "lusty," emblazoned all over the cover. It's done, of course, to help sell the books, but I can't help wondering sometimes whether more discerning readers skip over these titles in the mistaken belief that these novels are nothing more than fleshy potboilers. If this is the case, they are missing what is truly one of the great feats of historical romantic fiction in this century.

The premise of these novels is that the "Flashman Papers" were discovered in a Leicestershire attic in 1965. In them, the English soldier and adventurer, Harry Flashman, recounts his adventures throughout the British Empire during the latter half of the nineteenth century. They are helpfully "notated" by the "editor," George MacDonald Fraser, who occasionally comments upon the authenticity of Flashman's recollections. And what do you know! Flashman just happens to have been present at just about every single major military event in English history of these times! Lucky us!

In this one, Flashman recounts his experiences leading up to and at the famous Charge of the Light Brigade in the Russian Crimea in 1854. He is subsequently captured by the Russians, escapes, is captured again, escapes again, and with the help of Tajiks and Kazhaks, battles the Russians and makes his way to British-controlled India.

Believe me, this is just as fun as it sounds, but what takes it to the highest, most delightful level is the sheer narrative force of Fraser's Flashman, unquestionably one of the most enjoyable narrators ever created. As well as being reliable and honest--qualities a reader hopes at the very least to get in a first person narrative--he is also extremely intelligent, witty, funny, and very, very opinionated. Thus, in describing the Russian peasantry, we don't get a carefully-worded, afraid-to-offend, cautious assessment, we get this: ". . . this dull clown was just standing and letting himself be caned by a fellow half his size, hardly even wincing under the blows. There was a little crowd of serfs looking on, ugly, dirty-looking rascals in hairy blue smocks and rough trousers, with their women and a few ragged brats--and they were just watching, like cowed, stupid brutes." You may wince at his less than diplomatic commentary, but you may be sure you are getting the truth unvarnished, told as only the indefatigable Flashy can do.

These novels are also historically accurate, and meticulously researched even to the tiniest detail. From the lay of the land on a battlefield, to a description of the Russian steppes; from the uniforms worn by various regiments of various armies, to the weapons and ordnance available to each; from the subtle nuances inherent in the languages he encounters in central Asia, to the slang routinely used by Englishmen; it is clear that Mr. Fraser has a unique and thorough understanding of England and the British Empire in the nineteenth century. In fact, it is impossible to believe that there might be another living human being who knows more. The reader gets the sense that he is in the hands of a master; there is nothing here which strains credulity.

In fact, Mr. Fraser has us so firmly in his stead that the romantic elements strewn liberally throughout these novels barely raise an eyebrow. Thus, the scenes when Flashman is chased by wolves over the snowy steppe in a rickety sleigh, or thrown into a dungeon and threatened with the vilest torture, come across as believable and exciting, rather than foolish or cartoonish. And yes, yes, there are dalliances with beautiful women, but what kind of an adventure/romance would this be without them?

In short, the Flashman novels provide everything the lover historical fiction dreams of: exciting and historically accurate plots, careful attention to detail, a thorough knowledge of the subject matter, and, perhaps most importantly, a witty and delightful guide to show us the way. Bravo, Mr. Fraser. Bravo.

More of the best
By ensiform
To those who have never heard of Flashman, please go look up the book "Flashman" and buy it. If historical fiction is your cup of tea, you'll be hooked. In this entry: Flash signs on to munitions duty as the Crimean War begins to heat up, never suspecting that one day he will unwillingly take part in Colin Campbell's stand (The Thin Red Line) and Scarlett's charge uphill of the Heavy Brigade, not to mention the infamous charge of the Light Brigade... And then be captured, become an unwilling spy and resistance fighter, and of course bed a Russian noble's beautiful daughter... All in a day's work for old Flashy, of course, who would rather be at home. I have little to say about this entry into the Flashman series other than it offers up more of the same, and three cheers for it, and too bad there's not even more of it. Flashy's still a rogue, bluffing his way through horrors, rogering his way into the confidences of the enemy, and sniveling his way out of danger. The facts that Fraser re-creates historical characters and events with a scholar's eye for detail and a great novelist's flair for the story, that Flashman is neatly and unerringly made to be the impetus behind historical events, and the whole exciting yarn is awash in a heady dose of sly wit and knowing parody, all go without saying: this is Fraser, after all, the best historical novelist of all.

Flashman around the world
By Dan Diamond
Too bad they didn't have frequent flier miles in Flashy's day; this Flashman adventure starts in London and sees the character halfway around the world to India, with stops in the Crimea and the Russian heartland. As one would expect, its a story global in scope and as usual for the series, quite true to history. Disparate topics such as the treatment of Russian serfs and the Afghan rebel leaders are woven well into the tale.
Another reviewer hits on the only problem in this book: the number of locales strains against the bonds of credulity. Flashman, dispatched to fight in the Crimean War, is basically involved in an entirely different story by the end of the book. I really would've liked to see a little more of the Charge of the Light Brigade and less of Russia.
But Fraser does such a great job of painting these historical scenes and Flashy is just so entertaining, that I can't give this book any less than 4 1/2 stars. Since Amazon doesn't offer that feature, there's really no problem in rounding up to 5.

Issues #589-594 and Extra #2: pleasant filler between two major ASM story arcs
By K. W. Schreiter
This collects issues #589-594 (and "Extra" #2) of Marvel Comics' "Amazing Spider-Man" series originally published in Spring 2009. The fun #589 is the one-shot "Return of the Spot" written by Fred Van Lente. Dan Slott wrote the next two-issue story featuring a trip to the Macroverse with the Fantastic Four. The main plot is a less than essential sidebar, but Peter considers revealing his identity to the FF, and #591 ends with a surprise. Mark Waid wrote the "24/7" arc that spans #592-594: Peter's nemesis is mayor, Aunt May has a new boyfriend and a new Vulture besets the city. Pencils for these issues are provided by Barry Kitson, Mike McKone, Dale Eaglesham and Paulo Siqueria. This hardcover also includes "Extra" #2, a pair of supplemental stories written by Joe Slott and Zeb Wells, respectively. Though enjoyable reading, this seems like filler between the previous "Character Assassination" and subsequent "American Son" story arcs. Despite the recent troublesome retcons of Peter's secret identity and marriage to Mary Jane, this remains my favorite Marvel title.

24/7 and counting...
By Cozzster
This book starts off with a story about the Spot. Kind of bland, and not the best story, but Spot is interesting.
For the second story, Spider-Man briefly joins the FF on a mission to the macroverse and decides where time flies by many hours to each hour spent in the macroverse. Pretty good story, but the dynamic between Torch and Spidey was not as great as it could have been and usually is.
In the third story, Spider-Man decides it will be fun to mess with JJJ and his spider assassin squad by putting himself all over the city, all hours of the day, with the intent of being on the cover of all newspapers in the city. What ensues is a fairly action packed story arc that is fun and entertaining.
I think the best story in the book is the "Birthday" story written by Wells that features Wolverine and Spidey out for a night on Wolverine's birthday. Very well written and both characters are captured perfectly.
A good trade altogether and would definitely recommend picking it up.

Peter Parker's deal with the Devil still not biting Marvel Comics in the tukhes
By H. Bala
Still adapting to the post-One More Day regime, still sorta resenting it and that git Joe Quesada. But I need my Peter Parker fix, and to be honest the Spidey brain trust has been putting out good stories. Case in point: the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: 24/7 trade, which collects issues #589-594 of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and also stories from issues #2 & 3 of the anthology comic book AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: EXTRA!

As things stand in this post-OMD reality: The police conspiracy to frame Spidey as a serial killer has been uncovered, with Peter's roommate with a badge now in the Witness Protection Program as he sets to testify against his fellow crooked cops. Harry Osborn's girlfriend is revealed to be the villain known as Menace, and Harry is not taking this well. Meanwhile, J. Jonah Jameson's distinguished-looking, even-keeled dad has entered the picture.

Phil Jimenez kicks off this trade with "Loose Ends," the short story he wrote and drew in ASM: EXTRA! #3. We catch up with Kraven's ambitious 12-year-old daughter and her feverish quest to follow in her father's footsteps. But first, she's plotting to revenge her pops on the Spider. Next up is issue #589 as we note the return of the Spot, an old-school 1980s Spidey villain whose black spots on his body are portals to another dimension. This is a nice one-shot story and it lends added depth to Dr. Jonathan Ohnn, with penciller Paulo Siqueira providing some interesting visuals. The best thing about this story, though, is Spidey doing his best scary Dark Knight impression, complete with classic McFarlane pose.

"Birthday Boy" (from ASM: EXTRA! #2) is a treat. In it, Wolverine invites Spidey to go pub-crawling, and what you'd expect to happen happens. But then comes a really terrific moment when Logan discloses why, on this day of days, he picked the wallcrawler specifically to hang out with, and once more we're reminded of what makes Peter Parker such a special character. I really liked this one. Artist Paolo Rivera's style - stark, stripped-down, deceptively simple - captures the mood perfectly.

Issues #590-591 is Dan Slott's turn on the rotation, and he's got Spidey teaming up with the Fantastic Four. Spidey and the FF receive a desperate plea for help from the Macroverse, a place these five had apparently explored some years ago. It's always fun whenever these guys hook up. There's long history there, with Spidey counting as one of the FF's closest and staunchest friends. However, in the Macroverse, when Johnny glimpses statues of the FF and of an unmasked Spidey, it dawns on him that he and his team once upon a time must've known Spidey's true identity and, ergo, somehow Spidey must've pulled some sort of sinister hoodoo mind wipe on them... because why don't they know it now? Oh, and I guess this is a good place to mention that this story also illustrates how infantile Spidey and the Torch's friendship sometimes gets. Best part is Peter and Reed indulging in nerd discourse while everyone else stands around getting really bored. Fantastic art by Barry Kitson, with an assist from Dale Eaglesham. To be honest, the neat character moments are what make this story. The plot itself is whatever.

The FF and Spidey get back to their world, with Mark Waid picking up the storytelling reins, as our superheroes realize just how much the space-time continuum has mucked up their jaunt. It turns out that the hours they've spent in the Macroverse have translated to two months, real time. And big things have happened in Peter's absence, and I guess I'll insert a ***SPOILERS*** alert here, in effect for the rest of this paragraph. Things that Peter have missed out on: 1) Aunt May's picking up a honey; 2) a certain someone (possibly a redhead?) leaving a tentative message on Peter's answering machine (but then, because the machine is full, the message is erased); 3) Peter having inadvertently landed a new roomie; and 4) there's a new Mayor of NYC, and it's gonna give Peter apoplexy when he finds out who it is. In fact, the mayor immediately establishes a police unit dubbed the Anti-Spider Squad, dedicated solely to capturing the webhead. This incenses Spidey enough that he decides to retaliate by staying in costume and launching a non-stop, 24/7 crime-fighting spree, in hopes of really tweaking the mayor's nose. Besides, Spidey reflects: "It's not like Peter Parker hasn't been off the grid for weeks already and doesn't seem to be missed..." Supervillain-wise, the webslinger tangles with the acid-spewing, absolutely more terrifying, all-new and not as bald version of the Vulture. And I did mention "acid-spewing," right? Because that's freaky.

The most interesting thing to emerge from Waid's storyline may well be Peter's coming to a sudden realization that what's truly been bugging him isn't the new mayor. No, what's been bothering Peter deep down is that Norman Osborn, Peter's most bitter rival, is now the most powerful man in the country... all because Spider-Man has never definitively beaten him. Spider-Man then vows to take Osborn down, thus paving the way for Joe Kelly's terrific arc Spider-Man: American Son. As the Dark Reign thing unfolds, it's always been in the back of my mind that no one but Spider-Man should end up taking down the Green Goblin. My distaste for One More Day and for Joe Quesada is unabated, but, okay, it's undeniable that the Spidey brain trust is chugging along merrily, submitting very solid work. Recommended stuff!
