Jekyll and Hyde with a librarian
By Amazon Customer
The story is not bad, as far as Harlequin romance goes. Maybe it's the art, that tends to get a bit disproportionate at times, or the dialogue, which feels immature, but can anyone explain to me the concept of two old women raising a young woman from childhood, and actually wanting her to be a "spinster"? Maybe it's the whole Clark Kent/ Superman issue, where hot guy realizes it's (gasp) the same woman! I appreciate the fact that he recognized her curves first and eyes second, so he earns that extra star. Just not as enjoyable as it could have been.

Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the east coast of Canda, Prince Edward Island measures only 5,660 sq.km. But what this island province lacks in size, it more than makes up for in abundant natural beauty, as well the scope of its influence on Candian history. Combing poetry with informational text, PEI Poet Laureate Hugh MacDonald pays homage to the province's natural splendors and proud history. Readers young and old can visit the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery of Anne of Green Gables fame, stroll the streets of historic Charlottetown, or paddle a kayak down the island's nearly 100 named rivers.

Prince Edward Island Memories
By Mermaid Lady
I purchased this book to give to my nephew after he vacationed with me on Prince Edward Island for the vary first time this past summer. It is written in such a way that the book can grow with him- he is two and a half at this point, and we can go through page by page and read the simple alphabet phrases such as "H is for hockey" and "I is for island"; Later on, we can read the descriptions on each page of why the included objects are important to the people of Prince Edward Island. The pictures within the book also show many of the places that we visited. It is just what I was looking for! Even if you do not plan on visiting the island any time soon, please check out the website for the Confederation Center for the Arts. Their exhibition of work by the artist Maud Lewis is not to be missed!

EXCELLENT Book For Kids AND Adults!!
By Cory
Our three-year old has almost 100 books and this, by far, is her favorite. We love to travel and at least ½ of her books are geography related.

Not only is this her favorite book, it is also my favorite. The book is a very unique mixture of catchy rhymes that children love and detailed information about Prince Edward Island. For example, there is a great illustration of a lighthouse including a 3-4 sentence rhyme, but then also a paragraph of informative narrative detailing the history of PEI's lighthouses.

Our family now lives in Philadelphia, but I grew up in PEI. This book was taught me things I did not know about PEI, even after being raised in the province. It allows my daughter to connect with the birthplace of her Dad through excellent illustrations and insightful narrative.

I highly recommend this book to any family that has visited or plans to visit Prince Edward Island. This book will captivate both a toddler and a teenager.

Very nice work, Mr. MacDonald!

While slinging hash in a diner, a would-be Cinderella meets her Prince Charming
Carrie Selden is not at all like the woman you’ve read about in the papers. Though she was raised in an orphanage, she isn’t an orphan. She didn’t finish high school until she was nineteen, but that was because she was working as a waitress, not because she was slow. And though she’s very cunning, well, she’s no femme fatale. But her beauty . . . oh yes, her beauty is everything you’ve heard. At twenty-one, she takes her savings and moves to New York City, landing a job at a diner called Karb’s, at the bottom rung of the restaurant chain’s tall corporate ladder. Though she makes minimum wage, Carrie is savvy, and it isn’t long before she starts to climb. When her coworkers unionize, they choose her as president, and from there, the sky is the limit. But just as the union gets underway, she meets a mysterious intellectual named Grant—who will either help her rise to the top, or drag her straight down to hell.

Review
“Nobody else has ever quite pulled it off the way Cain does, not Hemingway, and not even Raymond Chandler. Cain is a master of the change of pace.” —Tom Wolfe “A poet of the tabloid murder.” —Edmund Wilson “No one has ever stopped reading in the middle of one of Jim Cain’s books.” —Saturday Review of Literature

About the Author
James M. Cain (1892–1977) was one of the most important authors in the history of crime fiction. Born in Maryland, he became a journalist after giving up on a childhood dream of singing opera. After two decades writing for newspapers in Baltimore, New York, and the army—and a brief stint as the managing editor of the New Yorker—Cain moved to Hollywood in the early 1930s. While writing for the movies, he turned to fiction, penning the novella The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934). This tightly wound tale of passion, murder, and greed became one of the most controversial bestsellers of its day, and remains one of the foremost examples of American noir writing. It set the tone for Cain’s next few novels, including Serenade (1937), Mildred Pierce (1941), Double Indemnity (1943), and The Butterfly (1947). Several of his books became equally successful noir films, particularly the classic 1940s adaptations of Mildred Pierce and Double Indemnity. Cain moved back to Maryland in 1948. Though he wrote prolifically until his death, Cain remains most famous for his early work.

Defies simple description
By wiredweird
No matter how much gets written, there's always room for something different - and this is very different. Start with a classic Horatio Alger story, where poor but honest lad does improbably well in the world. Now, it's not a lad but a lass, working as waitress, becoming the most-watched investor on Wall Street and wife of a high society figure. Take all that, paint it noir, and hard-boil it. Then give everyone the darkest and most brutal motives, except of course for Our Girl's love for Her Man.

This isn't the best-known of Cain's work - Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice probably sound more familiar. That's OK. Even minor work by major authors usually reward the reader, as this does.

By Robert Dinsmoor
I'm a big fan of Cain's work, including (especially) Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Mildred Pierce, and many of his short stories. The Root of His Evil is a strange mixture of class warfare and a romantic triangle, as a waitress becomes romantically involved with a man who turns out to come from a very wealthy family--and another man who is a labor organizer. The strong female lead is very reminiscent of the character of Mildred Pierce, but the latter was a much more interesting book.

A Great read, of course a little dated, but an enjoyable nonetheless. I am not sure if this was made into a movie or not, like Double Indemnity.

Arbitrary Plot Twists, Lots of Dialogue (Spoiler)
By Laurie Henry
Four stars instead of five because the arbitrary plot twists seem almost too arbitrary. The romantic entanglements unravel by the end of the book, but it's okay because the characters' choices of love objects seemed so arbitrary to begin with. The most genuine feelings in the book--apart from those between the mother and the son--seem held by two characters who really love their cat.

The main joy, to me, in the books of Ivy Compton-Burnett is in the language, often referred to as "epigrammatic." The book consists almost entirely of dialogue, and the characters talk to one another in wonderfully stilted ways. They philosophize to one another about the meanings of their feelings and experiences, their own relationships, and the relationships of other people. Their conclusions are usually not what our would be. At the same time, the characters can be crude and funny in a more basic way: the children in the family contemptuously refer to their, um, older relative Rosebery, I ask you?) as "Rosebud," which hurts his feelings quite a bit.

I bought this book although I could have gotten it from the library for free because it was the middle of the night and I had to have it now, and I don't regret the purchase.

We've largely forgotten our ancient Celtic chakra heritage, indeed some people think there is no concept of chakras in the western tradition but this is not the case. The chakras are found throughout the mystery traditions all over the world, well known to our hunter-gather ancestors and the spirit keepers who led them. They are hidden deep in the ancient stories and myths of Britain. This book leads you through the lore of Arianrhod and her Spinning Towers, the riddling Gaelic poem The Cauldrons of Poesy, the rainbow bridge of Brighid and the ways and caers of the ancient British reindeer goddess, Elen of the Ways. There are journeys, meditations and exercises to help you get the feel of the Celtic chakra system into your bones.

Very Cool Book
By Serious Black
This book is very simply explained and presents a wonderful subject. I am in the educational process of becoming a healer and energy worker, and wanted to find something about the energy centers that was not based in Eastern Chakra tradition. I personally really resonate with ancient Celtic history and tradition, and was looking for something on the Celtic idea of Chakras (exactly this book) to help me piece that into my work. For me, it's absolutely a no-brainer that the Druids meditated and understood/utilized the energy centers and pathways in their practice. To find the spiral working here also makes so much more sense to me than the linear model of the East. I really appreciate this book, and I'm grateful it was written!

Unique, authentic & Utterly Fascinating!
By Morgaine Bergman
Presents the Western concept of "chakras" and a system through which to explore them that reveals itself as based on universal truths, yet distinctly rooted in the ancient Celtic Druidry of the native people of the Isles. For anyone working within the Western Mystery Tradition, this offers a much more authentic and compatible approach than slapping on bits from the Far East could ever do. Highly recommended.

The meditation in the first few pages of the book was worth the purchase.

I kept reading anyway :-) and was rewarded for it. Not only is the information validating for any spiritually aware person, but it also expanded my awareness of Who I Am.

This book is not for everyone, but if it is for you, you will KNOW it... it was written for you.

The March on Washington: Jobs, Freedom, and the Forgotten History of Civil Rights, by William P. Jones

“Vivid and moving. . . . [Tells] a story all but lost in most civil rights histories.”—Bill Marvel, Dallas Morning News

It was the final speech of a long day, August 28, 1963, when hundreds of thousands gathered on the Mall for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In a resounding cadence, Martin Luther King Jr. lifted the crowd when he told of his dream that all Americans would join together to realize the founding ideal of equality. The power of the speech created an enduring symbol of the march and the larger civil rights movement. King’s speech still inspires us fifty years later, but its very power has also narrowed our understanding of the march. In this insightful history, William P. Jones restores the march to its full significance.

The opening speech of the day was delivered by the leader of the march, the great trade unionist A. Philip Randolph, who first called for a march on Washington in 1941 to press for equal opportunity in employment and the armed forces. To the crowd that stretched more than a mile before him, Randolph called for an end to segregation and a living wage for every American. Equal access to accommodations and services would mean little to people, white and black, who could not afford them. Randolph’s egalitarian vision of economic and social citizenship is the strong thread running through the full history of the March on Washington Movement. It was a movement of sustained grassroots organizing, linked locally to women’s groups, unions, and churches across the country. Jones’s fresh, compelling history delivers a new understanding of this emblematic event and the broader civil rights movement it propelled.

From Booklist
Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech and the march that occasioned it were about not only racial harmony but also the freedom that comes with equal rights and economic opportunity, in other words, jobs. Jones examines the historic 1963 March on Washington from the perspective of its focus on jobs. He zeros in on labor leader A. Philip Randolph, who advocated for an increase in the minimum wage, extension of minimum wage law to agricultural and other workers left out of the federal law, and programs to train workers for well-paying jobs. Randolph’s life reflected the complex evolution of the labor movement in the U.S., the influence of socialism, and the racism within the unions that kept out black workers. By refocusing on the jobs agenda of the march, Jones notes that it was relatively easier to allow blacks to have access to seats on buses and at lunch counters than to provide them with access to jobs at the restaurants and bus companies. This is an important look at the true significance of the March on Washington. --Vanessa Bush

For Jobs and Freedom
By Robin Friedman
This month, August, 2013, marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington of August 28, 1963, a watershed in the struggle for civil rights. Many cities will commemorate the March, which drew over 250,000 participants, including Washington, D.C. where the March took place. The March is best remembered for Martin Luther King's concluding "I Have a Dream" speech, which offered a vision of hope for brotherhood and peace in an interracial United States. There is much more to the March and its history that Dr. King's speech, deservedly famous as it is. Released to commemorate the 50th anniversary, William P. Jones' book, "The March on Washington: Jobs, Freedom, and the Forgotten History of Civil Rights" (2013) studies the March and its history beyond a focus on the "I Have a Dream Speech". In so doing, it helps bring a new understanding to the speech, as well as increasing readers' understanding of the civil rights movement in many other ways. Jones, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, is a specialist in civil rights and labor history. His book shows how civil rights workers and unionists combined to make the March on Washington.

A. Phillip Randolph (1889 -- 1979) more than Dr. King, is the leading character in Jones' study. Randolph was the director of what became the 1963 March for Jobs and Freedom. The 1963 March was not the first such even Randolph had planned. In 1941, the United States mobilized for the war effort. Randolph, already an established union leader and activist, became concerned that African American workers would not benefit from the economic growth resulting from the war due to pervasive employment discrimination. He mobilized grassroots organizations, including African American unions, church groups, and African American women's groups for a 10,000 person March on Washington to protest employment discrimination. President Roosevelt tried to disuade Randolph from the March, fearing in would divide the country. At virtually the last moment, Roosevelt signed an Executive Order forbidding discrimination in Federal contracting and establishing a Fair Employment Practices Commission. When he had done so, Randolph though his objectives had been achieved and called off the march. The decision disappointed many of the prospective participants.

Randolph's activities in connection with the 1941 march are at the heart of Jones' book, but there is much more. Jones examines Randolph's early unionizing and publishing activity which began in the years of WW I. Although his focus varied, Randolph had strong socialist tendencies and focused on jobs and economic opportunities for all in the United States, regardless of race. Thus, as early as 1919, Randolph urged black radicals "to form an alliance with white radicals to build a new society -- a society of equals, without class, race, caste or religious distinctions." Throughout his life, Randolph was strongly anti-communist.

Jones examines Randolph's skill at organization and networking which culminated first in the 1941 planned march. Although the march did not occur, Randolph transformed the organization into a "March on Washington Movement", supported again largely by African American unions and African American women's groups which monitored compliance with Roosevelt's Executive Order and fought discrimination against black people. Jones' history then shifts to Martin Luther King Jr. who becamse leader of the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott in 1955. Randolph supported the movement with funds, publicity, and staff, including Bayard Rustin who played the critical role in planning the 1963 March. From that point on, King's and Randolph's movements intertwined.

In the 1950's Randolph continued to work for social and economic justice for African American workers. When there was a partial falling out with national union leadership, and in light of President Kennedy's proposed civil rights legislation, Randolph again pursued the March on Washington he had planned in 1941. He enlisted Dr. King and various other civil rights and union organizations at various places on the political spectrum.

Jones wants to show a greater degree of militancy in the March than it frequently is accorded in standard accounts. Jobs, economic, justice, and social reorganization were at the forefront of all the speakers that proceeded Dr. King, including Randolph's own opening speech. Without the eloquence of King, Randolph proclaimed a message of economic justice: "The sanctity of private property takes second place to the sanctity of the human personality". The following speakers were more radical than Randolph. And Dr. King said, in the sometimes overlooked first line of his speech: "The Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity."

Jones' shows the many groups and positions in the civil rights struggle that coalesced during the March on Washington, with a strong focus on unionism and economic justice. He also spends substantial space examining the rising women's movement. The march and the civil rights movement were only possible because of the large efforts made since the beginning of the 20th Century in working towards economic justice and civil rights. The movement risked fracturing and factionalization many times, before and subsequent to the 1963 March.

This is a detailed, scholarly book. Jones' passion for his subject and his militance for economic justice comes through his pages and enhances the study. Even if the reader does not fully share Jones' perspective there is much to be learned and admired from the voice of economic radicalism. The writing style of the book sometimes requires effort to go through, and the book's organization sometimes is cumbersome and repetitive. That said this book offers an extraordinarily perceptive and provocative account of the 1963 March on Washington, its background and its goals. This book is an excellent choice for readers wanting to think about the March on Washington and its ongoing significance.

Timely and Profound
By Ajamu Dillahunt
Arriving on the eve of the 50th Anniversary of this seminal event in US history, Jones illuminates the decades history that served as the basis for this powerful event. He takes us way beyond the King speech into the critical players, their radicalism and the full agenda of this 1963 protest march and rally. A scholarly work that is assessable for those trying to make a difference today. Clearly the March issues remain unresolved.

Valuable reading!
By petya g
Valuable reading to put the March of 1963 in contact. I was at that March, and proud to have been there. This book gives context on its origins, the other themes about jobs and economic opportunity that were so important to the organizers, about which I knew little. Does a fine job showing how constrained the black community was by the political conservatism of the country on race issues and economic issues both. I wish the author were more analytic, interpretative. Much of it consists of references to meeting notes, letters, etc. This is great in building a strong narrative and time line and relationships, thus solid history. It lacks the incisive interpretation that makes great history. Worth a read if you are interested in the issues

Packed With Texas Trivia - Highly Recommended!
By Gregory J. Nelson
This book is part of Sleeping Bear Press' State Alphabet series. Now, some of these books need some liberal stretching to get 26 verses of relevant information. Not this one, though. We're talking Texas here. If there's one state that could easily fill an ABC book, it's the Lone Star State.
Carol Crane has done a very nice job selecting a wide range of Texas locations, events, and people to use in this book. Besides the usual suspects, such as the Alamo, the book mentions Scott Joplin, armadillos, Quanah Parker, Spindletop, Dr. Pepper, and, of course, bluebonnets.
The book's layout, like that of the others in this series, features a very interesting two-tiered system. The main flow of the book is carried by a series of 4-line verses, one per letter. This portion is suitable for reading to pre-readers. Along the sides of each page, relevant factoids are given, further illuminating the main verse. This makes the book hold appeal for older readers, probably even up to 4th or 5th graders.
Alan Stacy's well-drawn illustrations bring the subjects to life, especially for younger readers.
I found this book to be a great way to deliver a working knowledge of Texas. Highly Recommended.

More Than The Typical Alphabet Book
By SSF
A Texas alphabet, but it's also so much more! It can be read simply as "L is for Lonestar" or "T is for Texas", BUT the cool thing is each alphabet page also has some pretty good facts and story relating to the "word" associated with the letter. The facts/stories, words, and are are also fun to flip through randomly and talk about. Great for all ages!!

Fabulous book!
By Lesley M. Goodman
This is such a wonderful book! I commend the author for filling it with all kinds of wonderful, educational, and entertaining facts about Texas. It is a great teaching tool and I would recommend it for the classroom as well. Each letter is presented in verse, which children AND adults retain much easier. Being a proud Texan already, this book helped many elements of our wonderful state resurface in my memory as well as teaching me a few new things to additionally be proud of. If I was a teacher, I would want this entire series in my classroom. I give 5 LONE STARS to the author and illustrator!

The Politics of Genocide, by Edward S. Herman, David Peterson

In this impressive book, Edward S. Herman and David Peterson examine the uses and abuses of the word “genocide.” They argue persuasively that the label is highly politicized and that in the United States it is used by the government, journalists, and academics to brand as evil those nations and political movements that in one way or another interfere with the imperial interests of U.S. capitalism. Thus the word “genocide” is seldom applied when the perpetrators are U.S. allies (or even the United States itself), while it is used almost indiscriminately when murders are committed or are alleged to have been committed by enemies of the United States and U.S. business interests. One set of rules applies to cases such as U.S. aggression in Vietnam, Israeli oppression of Palestinians, Indonesian slaughter of so-called communists and the people of East Timor, U.S. bombings in Serbia and Kosovo, the U.S. war of “liberation” in Iraq, and mass murders committed by U.S. allies in Rwanda and the Republic of Congo. Another set applies to cases such as Serbian aggression in Kosovo and Bosnia, killings carried out by U.S. enemies in Rwanda and Darfur, Saddam Hussein, any and all actions by Iran, and a host of others.

With its careful and voluminous documentation, close reading of the U.S. media and political and scholarly writing on the subject, and clear and incisive charts, The Politics of Genocide is both a damning condemnation and stunning exposé of a deeply rooted and effective system of propaganda aimed at deceiving the population while promoting the expansion of a cruel and heartless imperial system.

A Good Reference book for USA double-standards re Genocides
By Michael B. Green
Herman and Peterson (H&P) have written one of the best and clearest accounts of US sponsored and supported genocides available. If there is any criticism to be made of their efforts, it is that they emphasize media bias rather than masterful hands-on orchestration of deliberate disinformation, and they leave the bias much too much unexplained, relying on their Propaganda Model from "Manufacturing Consent." They are of the Z-mag school that denies or minimizes the significance of the operation of major US domestic covert operations and so relies on excellent scholarship but is silent and misguided about the actual organization of state power.

The book repeatedly demonstrates that the US media is a propaganda machine perpetrating a particular myth, which not by coincidence is the very myth that Walter Lippmann set forth in the early 1920s in his masterpiece, "Public Opinion." Lippmann argued that such matters as foreign policy are far beyond the range of interest and cognitive capacities of the average person who, he contended, was generally capable of grasping only primitive stereotypes arranged into enjoyably simple narratives. Examples of such are that when the US kills it is noble and brave and its victims unworthy of concern, whereas when the US is attacked it is cowardly and base, and their victims deserve our deepest consideration. Our genocides are good and constructive, theirs evil and monstrous. Our allies are good and true, our enemies evil and dishonest, etc. They do a fine and convincing job of laying out identical atrocities side by side and noting that each is clothed in a different narrative depending upon whether it is friend or foe or U.S. The explanation for the success of such patent lies is to be found in Lippmann's lesser known but equally deep book, his 1929 "A Preface to Morals." Tragically, the ruling class understands the masses so much better than those wishing to mitigate their suffering. The writing of H&P, alas, remains dry as dirt almost throughout, abstract and unmoving, unable to make one's blood boil or heart race, and certainly little able to move its readers to action.

Almost the entire political careers of Herman, Chomsky, and now Peterson are devoted to "debunking" the content of the particular myths thus told, and by implication affirming the truth of what Lippmann said about the range of human interest, motivation and capacity. The professional Sin Eaters like H-C-P are atypical, and sadly suffer from a false picture of human nature. They keep bringing facts and reason to the table of a glutton addicted to sensation and spectacle that gratifies baser instincts even while one of them -- Chomsky -- keeps paying homage to the high moral purpose of the average American. I have more than a bit of the Sin Eater in my make-up, but a more accurate picture of the audience to which I would like to present the truth; its lack of interest and ability never ceases to astound.

As I write this review a used copy of this book is selling for $499. This book is available at the Monthly Review website bookstore brand new for $15.00. Gosh, which is a better deal? This ad plays its readers for suckers. The rating is five stars for the book, one star for the outrageous price, resulting in a confusing overall three star rating.

Interesting Read, if a Little Short
By BM
Applying the "Propoganda Model" (crafted by Herman with Noam Chomsky; see Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media) to the recent history of genocide and bloodbaths, the Herman and Peterson demonstrate how politicized the term of genocide is: reserved for our official enemies, but ignored when the US or its allies carry out the killing.

The authors briefly review major bloodbaths and genocides in the past 30 years, particularly with regard to their depiction in the mainstream Western media. Thus readers should be aware that this book does not go deeply into the events and history surrounding the bloodbath/genocide.

Another question is why Afghanistan wasn't a separate case in the book. Dasht-e-Leili, a massacre of several thousand by the Northern Alliance, is included, but not the country as a whole. Since this treatment is granted to Iraq, it is unclear why it is not similarly given for Afghanistan. Even, for example, the initial bombings in late 2001 may have resulted in as many as 20,000 casualties. [1]

A casualty of the cursory treatment given to each atrocity is that competing narratives of a bloodbath/genocide are not given much space. This is not a problem for most of the cases, as they are generally uncontroversial at to the facts. However, the chapter on Rwanda has received strong backlash from some academics. Herman and Peterson appear to be aware of how controversial their thesis is (which is that it was the Hutus, and not the Tutsis who suffered the majority of casualties from the genocide), and devote the most text to it than for any other atrocity.

Having read Gerald Caplan's review of Politics of Genocide and the responses that followed, I've concluded the following, speaking as a non-expert on the Rwanda genocide:

*A key piece of evidence presented by the authors is a study written by Christian Davenport and Allan Stam; they quote from the study: "[t]he killings in the zone controlled by the FAR [i.e., the Hutu-controlled Armed Forces of Rwanda] seemed to escalate as the RPF [Rwandan Patriotic Front, the main Tutsi militia] moved into the country and acquired more territory. When the RPF advanced, large-scale killings escalated. When the RPF stopped, large-scale killings largely decreased." (58) However, Herman and Peterson make no compelling case to attribute these killings to the RPF. On his blog, Adam Jones, a student of genocide, notes this "fits with a picture of Hutu Power agents lashing out genocidally at Tutsis, in spasms that correlate with RPF advances."

*The authors also quote from a September 1994 State Department memo which notes that the "[RPF] and Tutsi civilian surrogates [killing] 10,000 or more Hutu civilians per month, with the [RPF] accounting for 95% of the killing." (57) However, that would lead to, in a few months time, thirty or forty thousand Hutus dying, which conforms to the 'standard model' or the genocide. To reach the level of Hutu casualties argued for by Herman and Peterson, such a rate of killing would have to continue for more than five years for Hutus to make up a majority of casualties.

The authors do bring up an important point in that no Tutsi or member of the Kagame regime has been prosecuted for war crimes. If the above memo is correct, that is indeed a travesty of justice.

*The case that "the RPF was the only well-organized killing force within Rwanda in 1994" isn't made as strongly as it should have been, considering this part of the authors' argument is so integral to their overall conclusions. The authors state that three consecutive prime ministers were "either pro-RPF or subsidized by it", a pro-RPF minister headed the civilian intelligence agency, and "Rwanda's "integrated" military then combined the armed forces of the Tutisi-lead RPF that was seeking to overthrow the government alongside the government's regular army". (129) It's unclear why the government's regular army isn't considered a 'well-organized killing force' or, for that matter, why the Interahamwe militia isn't also included in this category. For example, according to Gerald Caplan [2], Belgian intelligence reported "at the end of 1993 that `The interahamwe are armed to the teeth and on alert...each of them has ammunition, grenades, mines and knives. They are all waiting for the right moment to act'".

*While informing the reader that the US desired a different regime in power in Rwanda, the authors never explain why. What was Habyarimana doing that was so objectionable to the US government?

*The authors claim that Tutsi forces mobilized "60 to 120 minutes" (56) after Rwandan president Habyarimana was killed, providing evidence that the killing was preplanned by the RPF. However, the source for this is a public lecture by Allen C. Stam; I may be nitpicking here, but a better source is preferable.

*Herman and Peterson find it "incredible in the extreme" that "Rwanda would be the first case in history in which a minority population, suffering destruction at the hands of its tormentors, drove its tormentors from power and assumed control of a country". (56-57) However, I agree with Adam Jones [3] that Herman and Peterson are "conflating Rwanda's civilian Tutsis with "Kagame's Tutsi forces"", given that the RPF was, by Herman and Peterson's own admission, an outside invading force.

*One point not mentioned in any of the responses to Herman and Peterson is why the Hutu government's UN ambassador pleaded for more UN peacekeepers while Paul Kagame and the RPF desired the opposite. It seems that those carrying out genocide would prefer not having outside observers of any kind.

One should be able to attack conventional wisdom, whether it's physics or genocide, without being attacked personally. Unfortunately Herman and Peterson were immediately labeled genocide deniers and part of the "lunatic fringe", as Caplan put them (the authors one-upped Caplan by accusing him of being a "genocide facilitator"). Their work deserves serious attention and, if necessary, serious rebuttals.
