About the Author
Jacqueline R. Braitman, formerly with the department of history and The Center for the Study of Woman at the University of California, Los Angeles, has published widely on partisan women and has served as the assistant executive director of the California Supreme Court Historical Society.

Gerald F. Uelmen is a professor of law (and former law school dean) at Santa Clara University. Past president of the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and California Catholic Lawyers Against the Death Penalty, he chairs the editorial advisory committee for California Lawyer.

Justice Stanley Mosk documented his thoughts throughout his life in speeches, public meetings, newspaper columns, articles, letters, and over 1400 legal opinions. In spite of this, J. Edgar Hoover also kept files on Stanley Mosk, as he did on others as a result of his obsession with, "the communist menace". The authors reviewed a massive amount of material and produced a thorough biography of a remarkable man. This book benefited from Professor Uelmen's legal perspective as well as the historical research background of Ms. Braitman.

Examining Justice Mosk's life and 62 years of public service is not possible without including the history and politics in California and the U.S. during that time. Justice Mosk influenced history, for example, in his stand for Civil Rights. As Superior Court Judge he ruled against covenants of grant deeds restricting resale of property to racial minorities. As California Attorney General he challenged the "Caucasian clause" of the PGA, which prevented Charlie Sifford, a successful black golfer, from playing in PGA tournaments.

The book provides examples of Justice Mosk's writing in legal opinions and their effect. His opinions have influenced laws in other states, in addition to U.S. Supreme Court decisions. His dissenting opinions are often biting. In reflecting on the value of judicial dissents, he wrote, "...This dissenter speaks of futures, and his voice is pitched to a key that will carry through the years."

This book gives the reader insight into Justice Stanley Mosk, the history and politics of his time, and an appreciation of our legal system.

Carl J. Jensen III, Ph.D., is the director of the University of Mississippi’s (UM) Center for Intelligence and Security Studies. He has published extensively and lectured throughout the world.

David H. McElreath, Ph.D., has a background that includes service as professor and chair, Department of Legal Studies, University of Mississippi; professor and chair, Department of Criminal Justice, Washburn University; associate professor, Southeast Missouri State University; Colonel, United States Marine Corps; and Law Enforcement and Corrections positions with the Oxford (Mississippi) Police and Forrest County (Mississippi) Sheriff’s Department. He is the author of numerous publications on the criminal justice system.

Melissa Graves, J.D., M.A., serves as project coordinator and instructor at the University of Mississippi’s Center for Intelligence and Security Studies. Among her other accomplishments, she and her codeveloper Walter Flaschka have designed and implemented the Days of Intrigue, a realistic practical exercise conducted yearly at UM that involves numerous intelligence community agencies. She is presently pursuing a Ph.D. in history. Ms. Graves has been admitted to the Bars of Texas and Washington.

CHAPTER MISSING FROM BOOK

Chapter 10 is missing from this book! I need it to study for a text on Wednesday, but it's not there! Chapter 10 is in the table of contents, but clicking on it does nothing. When scrolling through the book, it goes straight from chapter 9 to chapter 11. I don't know what to do! I'm so upset.

A must for IT pro's with a little bit of PowerShell experience

I definitely think if you are an IT Pro with a little bit of PowerShell experience this book is a must. I hesitate a bit to recommend this book if you are trying to learn PowerShell from the ground up, even though the reference and introduction sections are very useful well written. Along the same lines, if you are looking for a comprehensive book to teach you more advanced concepts in detail, This isn't the right book for that.

The book really shines when you need a starting point for a script or are stuck worth a part of the script. There are also a plethora of examples and some scripts that can be used out of the box as is. Some notable chapters are: Active Directory, Remoting, the Interactive Shell and Code Reuse.

This book contains A lot of good practical knowledge that is presented in a task based fashion. This book doesn't rehash the built-in documentation; but rather builds on it giving you a jump start to working code, saving you a lot of late nights.

This is the first PowerShell book you should buy, and may be the only one you need. I'm a developer (C/C++/C#) and Appendix A alone (language reference) makes this book worth its price.

Suggested reading order:
1. Part I, Part II Chapters 1-5 (fundamentals)
2. Appendix A (language reference -- best of its kind. Short, to the point, awesome).
3. Skip around as needed/interested.

The cookbook examples are useful, the descriptions are enlightening, and after Chapter 1/Appendix 1, you will have all of the "Ah ha!" moments you need to truly understand the great tool that is PowerShell.

Regardless of PowerShell version, get the latest edition of this book. I have all three editions, and it's gotten better each time.

Want to know why something works the way it does in PowerShell?, then this is the book for you!

With this 3rd edition of the book, I decided to read the book cover to cover. If you're brand new to PowerShell and have no prior experience with it, there are other books that I would recommend to you to read prior to reading this book. To me "Cookbook" is the perfect description for this book. It's almost like a comprehensive reference for cooking with PowerShell. It includes all of the PowerShell basics, but also dives deep into the depths of PowerShell and explains how things actually work. If you're like me and you not only enjoy accomplishing a task, but also want to know why something works the way it does, then this is the book for you. The only reason I would recommend other books to new comers is I would be afraid that some of these details that aren't necessary for a beginner to know might confuse them and make them think that PowerShell is more complicated than it really is. With that said, this is the perfect book for someone with a little prior experience with PowerShell.

This book is definitely worth it's weight in gold when it comes to PowerShell and I'm sure the physical copy of the book weighs a lot! By keeping my attention through two months and 1739 pages (EPUB), the quality of the book and the writing ability of Lee Holmes speaks for itself.

About the Author
Born in Eastern Tibet in 1952, Ringu Tulku has been a professor of Tibetan studies for seventeen years and a visiting professor at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, for five years. A Ri-Me' Encyclopedia

This book is beautifully produced by Shambala Publications, and painstakingly compiled by Ringu Tulku. Clear, concise and comprehensive, it also remains somewhat terse and dry - like the detailed encyclopedic reference it was meant to be (covering all forms of Tibetan Buddhism, with special emphasis on Nyingma and Kagyu varieties). Before reading this book I was a big fan of the Rime movement (Tibet's 19th century non-sectarian attempt to break out of the dominant conservative theocratic correctness), yet I now almost get the feeling it was a gimmick centered around Jamgon Kongtrul's (JK) compulsive intellectual/collecting habit. He comes across a bit like the more recent American scientist/author Isaac Azimov - consuming and compiling everything with his vast and voracious intellectual appetite... And so I think either Kongtrul the Great was unbelievably capable or obsessed to distraction. The obsessed option is easier for me to understand. I know this is heresy, but it's the impression I sometimes get.

The first 40 pages are a biography of JK. Then follows about 100 pages (1/3rd of the book) of abbreviated history of Buddhism in Tibet, that has lots and lots of lineage holder names. Then about 40 pages of condensed essential teachings of each of the main Tibetan lineages. The next two sections are what really interest me and make this book worthwhile, if not completely essential; 40 pages of Madhyamaka subtlety (showing the compatibility of the Rangtong, Shentong and Tantra varieties), then 50 pages on "The Traditions of the Nyingma and Sarma Tantras" (old and new schools) covering commonalities and distinctions, and the very interesting criticisms and rebuttals of the Nyingma Tantras and Dzogchen teachings (clearly showing their common ground with the newer traditions, a large part of the thrust of the Rime movement it seems). Especially fascinating is the detailed correlation of Dzogchen's Thogal visions with various visions of accomplishment in the Sarma tantras.

The overall impression I get is that the Tibetan's were very earnest scholars and practitioners, (with Jamgon Kontrul being like a Polar Star amid them). Over the past 1300 years there have been very many great teachings, great lamas, great lineages and that they intermarried so to speak quite a bit and developed all the support and intrigue (and dis-function, which this text does not directly address) that a large and close family would naturally develop. It is odd (and a bit silly) there has been so much drama and conflict between these traditions since they share so many more similarities than differences (obviously competition for worldly power and influence played a large part in this). Other texts cover these histories in more detail, and other texts cover these various teachings in more detail, but this one does a good job of condensing it all into a very readable and interesting form, plus giving a taste of the kinds of arguments and responses that defined Tibetan sectarian politics... Fascinating material for a select audience, but probably best as a synopsis and refresher than as a primary source.

New OTHERLAND/OZ story

"The Boy Detective of Oz" is Tad Williams' second OTHERLAND story (following "The Happiest Dead Boy in the World", 2003) that deals with the future adventures of Orlando Gardiner, the eponymous dead boy, who is now the quasi-immortal ranger of the OTHERLAND network. These stories follow the events of the four main OTHERLAND novels, and while no knowledge of the books is strictly necessary, both stories are certainly much more fun if they are read after the novels.

This time Orlando has to deal with something that looks like a murder (the deceased is not actually completely dead, although he lacks his head), but the mysterious almost-death of the Royal Policeman of Kansas is not the only mystery in the Kansas/Oz simworld, because there is unrest in the otherwise peaceful and idyllic simworld. And civil war threatens---

The story is a wonderful return to OTHERLAND and I hope that Tad Williams will write more of Orlandos adventures. It is a great, fun story, especially for readers familiar with OTHERLAND. I suppose it is somewhat less succesfull as a stand-alone OZ story, but readers looking for a new OTHERLAND fix will be delighted.

I'll start by saying that the novels this story birthed from, The Otherland Series, are possibly my favorite novels of all time. So needless to say I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to once again return to the digital world of Otherland!

When I first read Otherland I was excited each time the characters would find themselves in different digital simulations, from ancient Egypt and Alice in Wonderland, to more completely unique realms in the book and especially Oz.

I just can't say enough about Tad Williams' ability to create a unique and fascinating world and story and then fully transport his readers into that place. He is possibly my favorite author of all time, and if you have not read him yet, then I would make one of his books the first one you read. I would start with is Otherland series if he is new to you, and then definitely come here and pick up this book as the cherry to top off your Otherland collection.

That being said, this is a very well written work and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The glass cat was witty and enjoyable and Orlando {The Boy Detective of Oz} was just as enjoyable as he was during my highly enjoyable read of the Otherland Series years ago. I was not let down at any moment and loved the twist at the end of the story. I won't be heading on to other works in this Oz series by different authors from here, but if you like Tad, or think you want to give a great author a read, then I just can't suggest this book and all of his other books enough!

Have a wonderful day! Do yourself a favor and pick this or one of his other books up. You'll be hooked on Tad for years to come.

Impeccable - A Journey to a Beloved Land

I am a huge fan of Tad Williams' "Otherland" series. In my opinion, books just don't get any better than that. So when I heard that "Oz Reimagined: The Boy Detective of Oz" existed, I dropped what I was doing to pick it up. I wasn't disappointed with what I found! While it's only a short story (damn you, Mr. Williams, for not giving us MORE OTHERLAND!), it's both a fun and poignant one. We get to check in on one of my favorite characters and what he's up to since the events of the Otherland series occurred. It seems he's putting his immortality to good use, but there's a melancholy about him, too, that reminds me of how very sad I was when his fate was sealed in the other books.

I can't tell you how happy I was to check back in on Orlando Gardiner, not to mention the new Oz/Kansas! Great writing from Tad and I hope to see more from the Otherland-verse, even if they are short stories!

Disappointing Guide

Since northern New England is best seen by car, I was hoping for an informative itinerary that would show me the best routes to take to see New Hampshire and Vermont in two, three or possibly four days. The book is more a collection of the restaurants and places to stay. One could get that information online just by looking up the towns. You'll need to design your own trip with little information to go on with this book. Better off just contacting the tourism boards of each of the states. It's better information, it's online as well, and it's free.

Decent Place To Start But Some Glaring Oversights

This Fodor Guide is decent. I like that they have carved out these three states from Fodor's broader New England guide. Each state is divided into logical regions (e.g., Maine Coast; souther, central and northern Vermont) and then cities within each Refugio. Are discussed in a logical, sequential progression (e.g., City B is X miles west of City A; City C is Y miles northwest of B; etc). The guide also has nice side panels that focus on key regional characteristics (e.g., best dinners in New Hampshire; where to get the best Moon Pies in Maine; best routes to "peep leaves", etc,). Information is concise, clearly written, and supported by regional and city maps. Restaurant information and recommendations are good; lodging listings very from very detailed in larger cities (Portland, Manchester, etc) to very light. My main gripe, and this is an amateur historian talking, is that some of the historical information is spotty to nonexistent. One glaring example: only a mention - a clause in one sentence - about the Calvin Coolidge State Park in Plymouth Notch, VT. A pathetic oversight of a site well deserving a 2-3 hour stop. The coverage of Acadia National Park is also light. Barely a mention of South Harbor on Mount Desert Island. Nothing on the Penobscot Museum and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain sites in Brunswick, Maine. So, a good source for somewhere to start. My wife and I have supplemented Fodor's with books from AAA and our own research.

Finding the fall foliage...

Fodor's "Maine, Vermont & New Hampshire" travel guide is an excellent introduction to the northern New England states, a region offering a good bit more elbow room along with the historical attractions, great scenery, and multiple recreational opportunities of the southern tier. All too many folks know no more of the Northeast than can seen from the I-95 corridor. In fact, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire have their own histories preceding the founding of the United States and considerable natural beauty in the form of mountains, woodlands, lakes and seashores to share with visitors.

This Fodor's guide surveys each state, noting scenic routes, sites of tourist interest, recreational opportunities, and suggestions for accommodation and dining. Skiing in Vermont, hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, touring the beautiful coastline of Maine get their due emphasis. The guide provides a variety of maps, including diagrams of the downtown areas of some of the major cities and a detachable driving map. Insets highlight items of local history or interest. Commentary on travel to and within New England, along with brief weather and safety considerations, is included.

Fodor's guides continue to be updated year by years. The most recent versions are well-organized for quick use, with concise commentary, a nice selection of photographs and lots of good recommendations for what to see and where to stay and/or eat. The selections for dining and places to stay tend toward the high end, which may not be helpful for folks on a tight budget. This edition features a special section on where and when to see the best fall foliage. Recommended to visitors planning their first vacation in northern New England.
