The X-Men battle Vampires (but it's not as epic as it sounds)

WHAT IS IT
It's the X-Men versus the collected might of the world's vampires in the first story arc from the new X-Men (Volume 3), spanning issues #1-6, which take place directly after 2010's big X-Men: Second Coming crossover.

Beneath the gorgeous dust jacket this hardcover collection wraps the six issues in an attractive black hardcover with red debossing. Interior pages are thick and glossy - meant to withstand multiple re-reads.

INTRODUCTION
X-Men (Vol. 3) launched in 2010 as a fresh start for casual X-Men fans, after the main titles endured three crossovers rich in backstory in a little over a year. With Marvel shedding four years of increasingly dire storytelling for a new "Heroic Age," it made sense to relaunch their flagship team into a title palatable for a casual fan and a part of the larger Marvel universe.

The goal? Less serpentine mutantkind intrique, and more battles and big name guest stars.

This first collection delivers on the promise of less intrigue - in fact, it's barely intriguing at all, never really gaining momentum to become an engaging story.

THE STORY (includes minor spoilers)
The book begins with vampires unleashing a dirty bomb of infected blood in broad daylight in the middle of San Francisco, which catches a depowered Jubilee in its blast. Jubilee was a long-time sidekick of Wolverine, and he takes the attack personally, unleashing his wrath on the vampires infesting the city.

When Wolverine and Colossus run into vampire slayer Blade they discover the vampires are up to a lot more than a few acts of domestic terrorism - Dracula's son Xarus recently slayed his own father, and is seeking to rally the various vampire sects into one great race, and San Francisco is ground zero for their gathering!

The story reaches a climax with an infected Jubilee luring Wolverine away from the rest of the team, Cyclops trying to make a deal with an unlikely ally, and the X-Men's island home being stormed by thousands of vampires!

THE SCRIPT
Writer Victor Gischler never find the right pace for this story arc, and as a result the six issues both race and drag. Part of the problem is the need to show the vampire's side of the story, which tends to drag with needless exposition and monologues. Their flat segments compress our time with the X-Men, which feels fleeting.

The tight focus on Wolverine, Cyclops, Jubilee, and Angel precludes many other popular characters, who are relegated to the deep background. Xarus's master plan is a tenuous at best, as is Cyclop's initial hail mary plan that takes up two issues. So many vampires are packed into the Bay area that any result but the total annihilation of the human race seems impossible.

The first half of the book relies on Wolverine for all of its action; the final two issues have more of the X-Men in on the fight. However, if you're an action junkie be warned - there are less than a dozen pages of non-Wolverine battle in this collection. Some of the most interesting fights occur off-panel - particularly, Dracula's death and the hunt for his body is detailed in a trio of issues not collected here.

(The X-Men: Curse of the Mutants OneShots and Namor: The First Mutant - Volume 1: Curse of the Mutants fill in most of the gaps, but they're inessential.)

ARTWORK
The luscious cover art of this collection doesn't reflect the interiors. Cover illustrator Adi Granov delivers stunning, photo-realistic depictions of the X-team on the six covers collected here, each worthy of framing.

Interior penciler Paco Medina has a slick, pleasing style that's reminiscent of the 1990's X-Men cartoon. His strong suit is clear, easy-to-follow action. He's great on Cyclops and Wolverine, a little weaker on X-women, and his vampires lack bite.

BOTTOM LINE
On the whole. X-Men: Curse of the Mutants reads like a sideline mini-series than a main X-title. That's the point of this ongoing - to present non-essential, easy-to-follow X-Men stories. However, just because it lives up to its goal doesn't make it worth picking up.

RECOMMENDED READING
Fans seeking quick, casual X-Men reads should try the recent X-Men Legacy: Emplate or any of the Astonishing X-Men collections. If you really love the Adi Granov cover art, try Astonishing X-Men: Ghost Box, illustrated by Simone Bianchi. For more intrigue with Cyclops in charge, try the hefty X-Men: Nation X collection.

The recent Second Coming had big battles with high stakes, but it's a little hard to follow without some background - if violently shredding vampires sounded up your alley you might dig the first volume of the recently concluded X-Force - X-Force Vol. 1: Angels and Demons.

Curse of the Mutants Delivers... Barely

First off, this hardcover is more enjoyable if you purchase X-Men: Curse of the Mutants OneShots and Namor: The First Mutant - Volume 1: Curse of the Mutants. The Namor TPB is particularly good, as the art has a dark undertone that is absolutely perfect for the story. The one shots are unnecessary and only add more detail to the X-Men vs Vampires storyline.
While I do not doubt that this storyline was born out of the vampire craze currently plaguing the entertainment business (Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, etc.), this manages to actually make a decent story out of it. After Dracula's son, Xarus, slays his father and scatters his body across the world, he plans to once again make vampires a dominant species. A vampiric suicide bomber infects Jubilee, whom Pixie rushes to Utopia. The X-Club and Blade confirm that Jubilee is now a vampire. Cyclops determines that it's up to the mutants to stop the vampires and sends Storm and Gambit to retrieve his headless body (Covered in the Storm + Gambit one shot) and Namor is tasked with getting his head (Covered in Namor: The First Mutant 1-4). The rest of the series is pretty much the X-Men dealing with a member of their team being turned into a vampire and then the Vampire Clans attack Utopia. And yes, it's a pretty epic battle.
Overall, this storyline didn't live up to my expectations. Occasionally awkward dialogue and serviceable art make this HC mediocre. If you're a casual fan of the X-Titles, I would recommend picking this up. If you're a newcomer to the X-Franchise I would recommend getting Grant Morrison's New X-Men, Vol. 1 or if you have the cash, Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men Omnibus.

Incredibly Mediocre

With Messiah Complex, Messiah War, and Second Coming renewing my interest in X-Men and Marvel Comics, I came into this new series with elevated expectations. Despite the seemingly obvious attempt to cash in on the modern vampire craze, I was hoping for another eventful story arc. Unfortunately this failed to deliver on multiple counts.

While the story starts off with an interesting direction thanks to Jubilee playing a prominent role, everything else feels boring and uninspired. A rather boring and predictable enemy in Xarus, the major battle and climax has little suspense and drama, and the final resolution just wraps up too quickly. Blade is completely wasted as a supporting character and adds little to the story other then the apparent requirement that if Vampires are involved, Blade has to show up. And Dracula's portion of the story? Mostly told in another book.

Overall, the book is a quick read and might be interesting for fans interested in seeing what happens with Jubilee. Beyond that? You can skip it.

About the Author
Gustave Le Bon (1841 -1931) was a French social psychologist, sociologist, and amateur physicist. He was the author of several works in which he expounded theories of national traits, racial superiority, herd behavior and crowd psychology. His work on crowd psychology became important during the first half of the twentieth century when it was used by media researchers such as Hadley Cantril and Herbert Blumer to describe the reactions of subordinate groups to media.

Why I Avoid Large Groups of People.

_The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind_ by French social theorist Gustave LeBon is a short treatise on the principles of large gatherings of people. As the disclaimer on the title page notes, the ideas in LeBon's book were popular at the time of the late 19th century but are no longer in vogue today. The reasons for this are obvious, as LeBon unpretentiously puts to fault all the rhetoric about "democracy," "equality," "fraternity," and "equality" as being mere catchphrases that self-serving demagouges use to control the spirit of the masses. He cites the French Revoloution and the demands of Socialism and Communism during his time. LeBon outlines the way crowds tend to think (in vivid images illogically connected), how they reason (they don't for all practical purposes), how they express exaggerated emotion, how they are very quick to take action without coherent thought and of the general extreme-conservativism and intolerance of crowds. The individual who becomes part of a crowd tends to loose himself, and feels invincible as he is aware of the similarity of mind and purpose of all those surrounding him. LeBon notes how individuals become unthinking entities of the Herd, and can be unconsciously made to do acts, which can either be of great criminality or heroism. The reasoning of the solitary individual is superior to that of a crowd which has no individuality. All are "equal" in a crowd where, for instance, a mathemetician is caught up in the same spirit as a laborer and class and intelligece differences fall to the lowest common denominator. One advangage of crowds is that they can express the spirit of a class, caste, or race of a people better than the individual can, and that crowds are capable of great deeds such as victory in a war or the spread of a religion that would be beyond simply one person's effort. The back title of _The Crowd_ mentions that Hitler, Mussolini in addition to Freud were familiar with LeBon's work, and it is readily apparent that their followers acted very similar to the behavior that LeBon describes. The basic point of _The Crowd_ is this: For Bettor or Worse, Never Underestimate the Power of Stupid People in Large Groups.

I think the reviewer Derek Pillion summed up this book rather well. But I want to relate something that came into my mind after reading the following passage from chapter III:
"A hundred petty crimes or petty accidents will not strike the imagination of crowds in the least, whereas a single great crime or a single great accident will profoundly impress them, even though the results be infinitely less disastrous than those of the hundred small accidents put together.
The epidemic of influenza, which caused the death but a few years ago of five thousand persons in Paris alone, made very little impression on the popular imagination. The reason was that this veritable hecatomb was not embodied in any visible image, but was only learnt from statistical information furnished weekly.
An accident which should have caused the death of only five hundred instead of five thousand persons, but on the same day and in public, as the outcome of an accident appealing stronly to the eye, by the fall for instance of the Eiffel Tower [sic], would have produced, on the contrary, an immense impression on the imagination of the crowd.
... To know the art of impressing the imagination of crowds is to know at the same time the art of governing them."
What came into my mind after reading that passage? Airplanes and collapsing towers. This book is a must read for any thinking person.

More insightful than Macchiavelli

This is a short book whose pages have a far greater impact than the title might suggest. As many reviewers have already noted, the book simply explains the mechanisms that guide the popualr imagination and outlines the simple principles that enable the few who grasp them to hold control over vast populations. What struck me particulalry was how the recipes for power suggested by Gustave Le Bon are reflected in contemporary neo-liberal economic and socio-cultural agendas. Those who are involved in developing education policies will find the book especially useful. Writing over a century ago,Le Bon criticized the liberal education system and advocated the more common sense practical type of learning that neo-liberal agendas have been pushing for since the late 70's. It also makes a strong case for the impact of simple messages over crowds. Common sense arguments, logic and thoughtful concerns, LE Bon argues, are lost on the masses. Indeed, it is widely believed that this was one of Benito Mussolini's favorite books. We are living ever more in an era of simplistic thinking. By reading this book you will understand how this has occurred and how demagogues rise to power. As with another reviewer, I also stay away from crowds. This book unraveled the unconscious instincts that always make me avoid crowds and anything that is too popular.

Named for the mythical (?) and mystical kingdom in the East, Shambhala Publications is known for bringing some of the greatest and sometimes most obscure philosophical writings of Mankind to the attention of the general public. Heavily (though not exclusively) concerned with Buddhist and Taoist thought, Shambhala Pocket Classics are an attractive set of unabridged minibooks which fit comfortably in a shirt pocket, making them perfect for reading on planes, trains, and automobiles. Titles in the set include THE BOOK OF TEA, WAY OF THE JEWISH MYSTICS, ZEN FLESH, ZEN BONES, THE TIBETAN BOOK OF THE DEAD, TAO TE CHING, POEMS BY EMILY DICKINSON, THE ART OF PEACE, THE ART OF WAR, and this volume by Rumi.

Jalâl ad-Dîn Mu'ammad Balkhî Rumi, of Persian extraction, was born in 1207. Poet, theologian, jurist, and Sufi mystic, Rumi's life was irrevocably changed when he had a brief (1244-1248) but immeasurably profound association with the mysterious mendicant Shams-i-Tabrizi, in whom Rumi saw the light of God's face reflected. Thereafter, Rumi penned some of the most numinous poetry ever composed by a human spirit. He died in 1273, and is still remembered throughout Islam.

In form, there are far better Rumi collections (and books about Rumi) than this inconveniently thick little pocket edition which samples many earlier compilations. However, if you are out walking and are inspired by nature or by human companionship, then this book is nice to have at hand for its substance.

if you're feeling like you need just a little hit of spirituality, this is the perfect book to put in your purse or keep in your desk. The book takes selections from Rumi's writing across his lifespan, so it's interesting to see the style and subject matter evolve.

Gorgeous Little Book

When my black Lab died, I went to the Agape book store looking for anything that might help get me through the day. I randomly picked up this little book and randomly opened it to page 84. I have read that poem over and over again, and have read it to help others who were grieving for whatever reason. I recently sent a copy to a friend and she read me a poem rom it that I hadn't read before. This book is a little jewel.

It's not just the content of the book--twenty-four chapters covering a gamut of issues--but the tone. The problems of and solutions to domestic violence are clearly defined through the voices of women as they share their experiences and carve out their steps toward freedom.

Each chapter discusses a different phase in the experience of "getting free" and the problems surrounding each phase. Readers can reach for this book to look up specific domestic abuse issues or they can read it straight through. There is much to learn here--the history of battering as a phenomenon; the political and social aspects of abuse; the historical changes to the institutions of marriage and family, and more.

Chapter 4, "What Do You Owe Yourself?," helps women work toward a healthy autonomy and defines what each partner in a relationship deserves. Discussion on the unconscious expectations of marriage and romance segues into practical advice on the economics of single life. An absolute must-read for abused women

I have worked in the field of counselling women both living in and attempting to leave abusive relationships and this book I have recommended over and over again. It covers everything a woman needs to know in order to make the decision to leave and gives her step-by-step direction and support throughout the process. An added bonus is that it is written in a language that someone with little education can understand. The exercises within this book are absolute gems which I use often in my practice, especially the one on emotional abuse. Many of the women I work with minimize this aspect of their abuse and it certainly is an eye-opener for these women. I hope it never becomes an "out of print" book. I would also recommend "Family Violence and the Chemical Connection" by Sally E. Baker. Unfortunately this is "out of print" but if you can find a copy it is invaluable. Others I often recommend are "The Verbally Abusive Relationship" by Patricia Evans, "The Emotionally Abused Woman" by Beverley Engel, "Outgrowing The Pain" by Eliana Gil and finally "Toxic Parents" by Dr. Susan Forward.

Best book "ever" for abused women

I wish this book was around back when I needed something exactly like this (in 1976-84). It covers "all" related topics: How to decide to leave (making the decision). Protecting yourself & the children, How to get help, the financial aspects of leaving "him", how to find a shelter (or a safe home), how to cope with loneliness, new love in the future, avoiding the same kind of man again.

The line that haunted me for years is: If there is 1% chance you will be killed, that is too great of a chance. I only wish that Nicole Simpson had read/or acted on the advice in this book. (My opinion, obviously). The book helped me spot abusers on the first date, rather than 2 dangerous months later.... And best of all it gives strategys for departure. Another memorable line: "Its easier for men to be cured of leprosy and than abusing women, EVEN WHEN THEY WANT TO BE CURED!" I have recommended this to dozens of friends and clients. If you don't think you need it, read the first chapter standing in a book store. As I discovered, when doing so "I'm living with a Monster!" (Denial reigns supreme until one's consciousness is raised. Remember, no matter how badly you were/are beaten: YOU DIDN'T DESERVE IT. ITS NOT YOUR FAULT! Call a shelter and get out of there. Now!

A beautifully illustrated peek into Wisconsin history and culture

"B is for Badger" is a wonderful book for learning about Wisconsin's traditions, history and culture. I'm a fan of this book series, but a few of the books I've purchased are quite detailed for young children.
This book is entertaining and informative, though each page is short and sweet enough for the younger ears, but puts forth something for both adults and children to learn about.

The illustrations are beautiful, and aptly capture the people, places, traditions and unique treasures found in Wisconsin.

This is a beautifully done book. It is good for little children and their older siblings (and parents) as it is written on two levels. The illustrations are wonderful.

Well written and researched informative work. I read, and was impressed with, the author's previous book, "Deadly Farce" about the informer system during the McCarthy period.
