Heart Warming Story

The Prince's Heir is a satisfying read for those who enjoy feisty heroines and rich, urbane heroes. After his brother's untimely death, the current heir to a European island kingdom is tipped off to the fact that he may not be the legitimate heir after all. His deceased brother may have been hiding a secret. Sent to find out the truth, Stephen discovers the facts and a tough Texas woman named Mandy who has adopted his nephew, the true heir to his kingdom. Accepting an invitation to live briefly with this family to see how they live and treat Josh, the heir apparent, Stephen and Mandy strike sparks off each other and develop an unexpected and unwanted connection. Mandy learns that life and love changes with time and she can take the love of family with her wherever she goes. Stephen learns that it can be safe to love and open up after years of being closed to strong emotion.

Ms. Carleen is no stranger to writing romance. With 15 books published in the genre, she knows how to pack all the necessary elements into the 50k word count required by the Silhouette line. In this book, her hero and heroine are both likable and sympathetic, her secondary characters add depth, the setting is so well written it becomes an additional character. I highly recommend The Prince's Heir.

unusual prince to commoner story line

wow! what a truly different story. A prince arrives to sweep away his royal nephew Joshua, next in line to the throne and honestly thought everyone would fall over to please royalty. what a shock for Stephan to encounter Mandy's blistering brush off and her family having no intention of simply handing over their adopted Joshua. Very entertaining to read Stephan's journey in coming to grips with down town Texas.

AND! this story has no endless, mindless sex scenes that's just there to fill the word count. An actual novel for a change
.
My only downside is that Mandy is a little over the top with her abrasiveness and downright rudeness at times due to her defensiveness and worry over losing Joshua. Other than that - enjoy!

Workman-like tale.

When Prince Stephan Reynard of Castile arrived in Willoughby, Texas, to retrieve his nephew, heir to the throne, he never expected to meet a Texas wildcat. Mandy Crawford was the adopted mother of the child in question, determined to save young Josh from the cold upbringing his father had endured. As Stephen and Mandy struggle to work out a solution, they fight a strong personal attraction.
If you can ignore the fact that the ruling family would have sent lawyers to handle this situation, not the current heir, you may like this story. The writing is good, but the emotional punch is missing.

A fascinating look at how changing educational trends affect special needs children

On the face of it, the title of this book would probably not normally engage my interest - which is unfortunate because it's a really fascinating book. The title isn't wrong either, the book really is about "Left-Brained Children"; it's just that you need a bit more explanation before you read the title.

Katharine Beals has used the label "Left-Brained" in place of other more judgemental labels. She describes the left brained child as the sort of child to whom mathematics comes easy and group work does not. Her definition is quite encompassing but if I have any issues with the book, they're simply that the definition she uses isn't wide enough. In my opinion, the book is just as relevant to children with "left brained" characteristics but better English/History skills than mathematics. Similarly, much of the book is relevant to children who have aspergers but who also have learning difficulties which prevent them from becoming "math wizzes".

The book describes three types of "left-brained" children;
* The Unsocial Child
* The Analytic Child
* The Mildly Autistic Child (Aspergers, HFA, PDD-NOS)

There are similarities between all three types of children and you may find, as I did, that things relevant to your child appear in all three sections.

What makes this book fascinating is that instead of providing an overall view of the child like most similar books, it concentrates on the changing school environment and its effects on these children.

It helps that Katharine is both an educator and a mother because her discussions don't stop at the school, they also include socialisation with school children outside of school (playdates), homework and learning at home.

It's strange but I had actually noticed many of the school changes that Katharine talks about. It's just that I'd never considered them together and I hadn't really given much thought as to how they were affecting my children. After reading this book, I've got a lot of questions that I want to ask at our next school meeting - and quite a few changes I'll be suggesting at our next IEP.

The book covers the effects of some radical and "right-brained" changes to the school curriculum many of which have probably already been implemented at your children's schools without your knowledge.

These include reform math, which places greater emphasis on creative and group solutions to problems than on mathematics itself. Examples include exercises such as "measuring the playground" and questions such as "What is your favourite number and why?".

The book covers changes to several other disciplines, including science, writing, foreign language and literature. These changes are all quite frightening and I've recognised a few of the projects cited as things my own children have brought home.

Textbooks are not novels, we don't read them simply for enjoyment. We want to be able to get something out of them. To do this, they need to offer real life examples and good advice.

Interspersed throughout "Raising a Left-Brain Child in a Right-Brain World", are snapshots of our children's world. Some are through the eyes of these children but most are from a parent's point of view. These are offered, usually at the beginnings of chapters, without any initial interpretation. The interpretation is provided when the incidents are referred to in later parts of the chapter. I really liked this approach. It gave me an opportunity to formulate my own ideas as a parent before explaining the real situation. In many ways, this is exactly the "gap" that parents experience between what they see and what their children feel.

Even better, each section concludes with a number of detailed suggestions for working around the problem. They range from the obvious and drastic; "change schools" including what to look for in a new school, to suggestions for inclusion in the IEP, extracurricular activities and even ways of dealing with your child's lecturing or argumentative streaks at home and with friends.

This book was really very interesting and relevant and I urge you to look beyond the title. If you have children, particularly in the early years of primary/elementary school, then this book may be essential reading.

Katharine Beals's book offers a welcome antidote to the mountains of parenting manuals and educational philosophies that treat children as if they were all the same. Rather than bemoaning the plight of parents whose children don't seem to fit the institutionally-articulated standard, Beals celebrates the idiosyncratic nature of the children she discusses, and in doing so, elucidates an expansive, exciting, challenging, upbeat and intelligent vision of what parenting and education might look like and feel like. It's a book that resists normalization and the averaging-out of human subjects, large or small. Hooray!

Every teacher should read this book. Every parent with a kid who doesn't fit the mold socially should read this book.

In most classrooms, there are one or two kids who don't fit the mold: who don't interact easily, for whom group projects are torture, and who are unable to participate fully in the modern conversational classroom. Teachers need to understand that these kids *are normal*; they aren't broken or in need of fixing (or medicating,) and they are not developmentally delayed--their personalities are simply different from the other 85-90% of the world. What they need are understanding teachers, and schools that take the diversity of personalities into account, and who do not place unrealistic demands on such kids. In short they need schools that separate a child's academic progress from their social integration.

Most important is Beal's observation that the modern classroom brings the worst aspects of the playground--with the social pecking-order--into the classroom and ties academic grades to a child's place in the social hierarchy. When classroom learning is framed around conversations among the students, instead of a conversations with the teacher, the kids at the top of the social hierarchy will prevail.

For example, our son's fourth-grade class was being introduced to the properties of circles, and because we had done some tutoring at home, he was familiar with the idea of pi. When he mentioned it to the other kids at his table, the others mocked him, asking if there was also a number called "cake." The fact that he was factually correct made no difference--it was the social hierarchy that prevailed, not actual learning.

However, the book is not just a show-and-tell of the problem. It also deals with ways to deal with so-called left-brained kids and with their schools and teachers.

It is the first guide to cover the length of the Appalachian Trail in a single volume. It doesn't describe every mile of the trail, but offers detailed descriptions of the suggested hikes. The best of the Appalachian Trail is all here in one book. Day hikes in all fourteen states the Appalachian Trail passes through are described in brief, followed by a point-by-point description of the hike and trailhead directions. All of the hikes have been rated for difficulty, and range in length from less than a mile to about eleven miles, so it is easy to find a hike for any backpacker - novice or experienced. (6 x 8 3/4, 208 pages, maps, icons, illustrations)

About the Author
Frank and Victoria Logue hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 1988. They have returned again and again to hike its many sections on day and overnight hikes. Frank served on the Appalachian Trail Conference Board of Managers. The Logues live in Georgia where Frank works as an Episcopal priest while Victoria writes. They both enjoy sharing their love of nature with their daughter, Griffin.

When he isn't writing about his experiences or delivering multi-media presentations to hiking or wildflower clubs, Leonard Adkins is hiking. In fact this Fincastle, Virginia resident has explored over 16,000 miles of wilderness throughout North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. He is a board member for the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club, which helps maintain a section of the trail in that area. As an Appalachian Trail Natural Heritage Monitor, he helps the Appalachian Trail Conference and the National Park Service oversee the welfare of wild and endangered plants.

Great Books!

Just bought this and Best of the AT Day Hikes and am really enjoying them. I know I will never hike the whole trail, but these two books give me the best that the Appalachian Trail has to offer without having to hike evey inch of it. The books are well-organized and you can glean a lot of information at a glance; later you can go back and get the specifics of the hikes. This is edition has been a major revision of the first edition with more than a third of the hikes being brand new and all of the hike information--length, difficulty, trail route, driving directions, etc.--updated. I (and you will too) will be making great use of them.

Wonderful Book, really informative

I wanted this book, but read the not-so-good review and decided not to get it. Then I read the author's comment (see below) and asked for it for Christmas. Love it. I've already taken two of the shorter hikes and found the book to be full It's full of lots of information with clear, concise directions to the trailheads, where shelters and water sources are, and much more. In fact, here's the author's comments. They sum up the book perfectly:

As the author of more than 15 books, I have never responded to an Amazon review until now. Below are excerpts from the Thunder Hill to Jennings Creek hike from Best of the Appalachian Trail Overnight Hikes and I will let you decide if the reviewer is correct in the assessment that the book does not contain good directions to the trailhead, shelters, or trail difficulty/rating. Whatever you decide-Happy trails to you!

THUNDER HILL TO JENNINGS CREEK ...MODERATE...15.4 MILES...
...Continue on the A.T. gradually rising and then gradually descending to the Thunder Hill Shelter at 1.4 miles. Water is from a spring that may be dry in summer. ...The blue-blazed trail at 11.5 miles goes left 0.5 mile to Virginia 714. Pass by Bryant Ridge Shelter at 11.6 miles and cross Hamps Branch...

TRAILHEAD DIRECTIONS
The northern trailhead is in the Thunder Ridge Overlook parking area at Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 74.7. Leave your car at the upper end of the lot.
The southern trailhead is on Virginia 614, 4.6 miles north of Arcadia, Virginia. It may be reached from the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 89.1 in Powells Gap by following Virginia 618, then Virginia 614 for a total of 5.8 miles to the A.T. crossing on Jennings Creek on Panther Ford Bridge.

Not enough information, not useful

I was very unhappy when I received this book. I have many hiking guide books and they all have been useful. This book won't be at all. There are no maps even remotely helpful, no good directions to the trailhead, no good info on shelters, campsites, no good info on trail difficulty/rating ... I have other hiking books of specific areas, like North Carolina, the Northeast, Virginia.... They all have much more useful details about the best AT trails within their borders. Don't waste your money on this book.

This short story has a great concept and delivers some wry wit in it's satire of the Nazi's fanaticism. Well written and entertaining this short packs a punch and delivers an idea that would make a great longer work. Recommended.

A good clean Christian romance. The one star review by Norma Hartwig states "too much ugly sex", but i'm not sure what she meant by that as there was no explicit sex, yes the women are having babies and there was description about childbirth but nothing about any sexual activity!

Oh, what a wonderful story, featuring the youngest Chance brother, Logan and future wife, Hattie. Guess the last story will be about Bryce. Every book of this series has just been SO heartwarming, they just seem to be getting better and better! This story took place in the hill country. I'm not sure which state as I don't remember it being mentioned, but all the people seem so kind and thoughtful, mostly. There can't be any better story to read where SO many people have God in their hearts!! You'll find this to be true in every book this author writes. I highly recommend this series!

Exciting adventures by a young couple in love.

I finished this book in four days. It kept me reading from start to finish. Logan and Bryce are very caring young men. Hattie found the right match in getting Logan. Though it took her along time to trust him. Because she had been hurt before. She knew her herbs and how to heal. I've read about the Chamce brothers before and enjoyed those three stories as well. Now I'm going to go back and read about Daniel and Lovejoy I should have read that one before this one. Kelley and Cathy Hake do great jobs with their story telling. It keeps you wanting to read more of their books. Now onto the other ones about the Chance men.

About the Author
Appleford was born and raised in a suburb of Detroit. Shespent the summers of her youth at a family cottage on the shore of Lake Michigan.

When Kathy-jo Wargin was a young girl, each night after dinner, her mother let her choose between washing the dishes or writing a poem. Before long, she decided that if she grew up to be a writer, she wouldn't have to do any dishes. Wonderfully written...beautifully illustrated!

We at Michigan Magazine television have had the extreme pleasure to visit with the illustrator, Michael Glenn Monroe, for an upcoming segment in regards to M is for Mitten and Buzzy the bumblebee and have found a wonderful dedication to collaborate with Annie Appleford and Kathy-jo Wargin in creating exciting illustrations that are bound to stimulate and encourage youngsters to learn the alphabet and more about our Great Lakes State!

Triple Threat!

Amazing illustrations...great poetry...interesting facts. You'll find all three in this alphabet book about Michigan. Great to read aloud and great to read alone (again and again)....I highly recommend this book (and future books in the series) to all elementary school teachers. My second graders hurried to grab this book after I read it aloud. Unique and such a high-quality book! BUY IT!

About the Author
Thomas Bernhard (1931-89) grew up in Salzburg and Vienna, where he studied music. In 1957 he began a second career as a playwright, poet, and novelist. He went on to win many of the most prestigious literary prizes of Europe (including the Austrian State Prize, the Bremen and Brüchner prizes, and Le Prix Séguier), became one of the most widely admired writers of his generation, and insisted at his death that none of his works be published in Austria for seventy years, a provision later repealed by his half-brother.

A brilliant performance by one of Europe's greatest writers

Thomas Bernhard is a little-known Austrian writer who, during his life, won every major literary award save the Nobel Prize. Concrete is, in my view, his best work. The tone of this novel, like a Bach concerto, is intertwined and unrelenting. A singular shower of first-person philosophies and opinions from someone quite obviously conflicted. There are no chapters (there aren't any in Bernhard's work) as the text reads like you're inside someone's thought process as they are wrestling with an idea. Some claim Bernhard is a misanthrope and a sexist but this is a very thin reading of him. His wild assertions and outlandish remarks are, in large part, meant to be self-mocking and in that there is great humor. The subtext is as if coming from someone not entirely trustworthy when he speaks which, of course, makes you want to listen. Bernhard is not for everyone. But if you try him and you already are taken with writers like Henry Miller or H.L. Mencken, chances are he will appeal to you on several levels.

An Excessive, Relentless and Brilliant Narrative

Thomas Bernhard's "Concrete" is a concentrated, excessive and disturbing stream-of-consciousness monologue by Rudolf, a reclusive, wealthy Viennese music critic who lives alone in a large country house. Rudolf suffers from sarcoidosis, a disease not described in the narrative, which is characterized by inflammation of the lymph nodes, lungs, liver, eyes, skin, and other tissues. Physically miserable and obsessively fearful of death, he also is a man paralyzed by his misanthropic, conflicted, exhaustingly relentless thoughts. Trapped in his own mind, Rudolf is a literary creation directly descended from Dostoyevsky, Kafka and Beckett.
Rudolf has been working for ten years on a biography of Mendelssohn, yet has failed to write even the first line of his work. "I had been planning it for ten years and had repeatedly failed to bring it to fruition, but now had resolved to begin writing it on the twenty-seventh of January at precisely four o'clock in the morning, after the departure of my sister." It is an intention to begin writing that recurs again and again throughout Rudolf's narrative, an intention to begin writing at a specific time in a specific location after the completion of specific preparatory tasks. And in each instance, Rudolf fails to begin, a sign of procrastination bred by obsession or of extreme writer's block or of extreme mental imbalance.
When Rudolf's sister leaves the house, he still cannot begin to write. Despite her departure, her aura remains: "Although she had gone, I still felt the presence of my sister in every part of the house. It would be impossible to imagine a person more hostile to anything intellectual than my sister. The very thought of her robs me of my capacity for any intellectual activity, and she has always stifled at birth any intellectual projects I have had . . . There's no defense against a person like my sister, who is at once so strong and so anti-intellectual; she comes and annihilates whatever has taken shape in one's mind as a result of exerting, indeed of over-exerting one's memory for months on end, whatever it is, even the most trifling sketch on the most trifling subject."
This theme, Rudolf's hatred for his older, worldly sister, runs throughout his narrative, the sister becoming one among many reasons (or excuses) for Rudolf's intellectual paralysis, his inability to write, even his inability to function in day-to-day life.
But it is not merely his sister that Rudolf despises. He also despises Vienna, the city where he once lived (and where his sister continues to live). "Vienna has become a proletarian city through and through, for which no decent person can have anything but scorn and contempt."
A complete recluse, his mental world bordering on solipsistic isolation, Rudolf no longer has any interest in social life of any kind. "To think that I once not only loved parties," he reflects, "but actually gave them and was capable of enjoying them!" Now he sees no reason or need for the company of others, for the people Rudolf spent years trying to "put right" but who only regarded him as a "fool" for his efforts. As Rudolf thinks, in a long, discursive interior response to his sister's claim that his desolate, morgue-like house, "is crying out for society":
"There comes a time when we actually think about these people, and then suddenly we hate them, and so we get rid of them, or they get rid of us; because we see them so clearly all at once, we have to withdraw from their company or they from ours. For years I believed that I couldn't be alone, that I needed all these people, but in fact I don't: I've got on perfectly well without them."
Rudolf is isolated in his own mind, a man who cannot accept the imperfections of others and of the world, but also cannot accept his own imperfections. And it is perhaps this, more than anything else, which explains his inability to get along in the world, his inability even to write the first sentence of his Mendelssohn biography. "Once, twenty-five years ago, I managed to complete something on Webern in Vienna, but as soon as I completed it I burned it, because it hadn't turned out properly." As Rudolf says, near the end of his short, but exhausting, narrative:
"I've actually been observing myself for years, if not for decades; my life now consists of self-observation and self-contemplation, which naturally leads to self-condemnation, self-rejection and self-mockery. For years I have lived in this state of self-condemnation, self-abnegation and self-mockery, in which ultimately I always have to take refuge in order to save myself."
"Concrete" leaves the reader exhausted from Rudolf's excessive and relentless narrative, giving truth to the remarkable power of Bernhard's literary imagination and narrative voice. It is a stunning literary achievement, perhaps the best work of one of Austria's greatest twentieth century authors.

A masterpiece

A terminally ill writer has spent the last ten years trying to write the FIRST SENTENCE of his masterpiece, and, failing that, spends this book-length monologue venting his outrage at everything and everyone--including himself--he holds responsible for his plight. This is one of the best examples of the stream of consciousness technique I've ever come across; despite the absence of chapters or paragraph breaks, the prose is extremely readable. It's a bitterly funny book (the rant about how domesticated dogs are destroying the world is the most hilarious thing I've read in some time), but it's the genuinely unsettling finale that puts this book into the top tier of modern novels. An absolutely first-rate book; don't let Bernhard's reputation as a difficult "experimental" writer scare you away from it.

Beautiful book collection

We have the "E is for Eiffel Tower", "S is for Shamrock", and "D is for Dala Horse" books from this collection. They are great books, with beautiful illustrations and they introduce bits of other countries' culture and history to kids. I plan on adding to this collection. My kids love them.

About the Author

Marcia L. Tate, EdD, is the former executive director of professional development for the DeKalb County School System, Decatur, Georgia and has been presenting to adult audiences for more than 25 years. During her 30-year career with the school district, she has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, language arts coordinator, and staff development executive director. She received the Distinguished Staff Development Award for the State of Georgia, and her department was chosen to receive the Exemplary Program Award for the state.

Marcia is currently an educational consultant and has taught more than 400,000 administrators, teachers, parents, and business and community leaders throughout the world. Marcia received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and elementary education from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned her master’s degree in remedial reading from the University of Michigan, her specialist degree in educational leadership from Georgia State University, and her doctorate in educational leadership from Clark Atlanta University. Spelman College awarded her the Apple Award for excellence in the field of education.

Marcia is married to Tyrone Tate and is the proud mother of three children, Jennifer, Jessica, and Christopher, and is the doting grandmother of two granddaughters, Christian and Aidan Brooke, and three grandsons, Maxwell Connor, Aaron Bryan, and Roman Alexander.

Excellent resource!

We've all been in presentations that seem to go on far too long. We've also experienced "death by powerpoint." In this book, Tate provides practical and insightful strategies for keeping your presentations upbeat and engaging. More importantly, she also addresses the needs of adults learners and outlines specific processes and activities that will engage them. I highly recommend this book for anyone who conducts trainings or professional development activities where others are there to learn. This book will make you a better presenter and those in your audience will gain more knowledge and skills in return -- a definite win-win situation!

Taught and Old Dog New Tricks!

I absolutely love this book. I teach adult ed for a living and this book is so fun to read and has so many great ideas. I would love to meet the author. I am a District Technology Facilitator and Community Adult Educator. I have been teaching adults for many years but yet I have learned so much reading this book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who teaches adults. Excellent
