Interesting world to visit - even if you wouldn't want to live there

Oddly enough, I read this book even though I've never seen an Andy Milligan film. Having read it, I'm not sure I ever will. That's not an insult to Milligan or to author Rob Craig; this is a very interesting book. I like Craig's books because they give me an insight into some of the fringe areas of film that otherwise may go unexplored. He respects Milligan's work and writes about it seriously and thoughtfully.

Over thinking that misses the real guy

Let me first say that I'm a huge Andy Milligan fan. I think Andy produced gutter art. I mean that as a plus because I'd rather watch a guy paint a heavy metal album cover than pull an exhibition of White on White like I saw at an art museum years and year ago. He was definitely a guy with a weird sensibility but also frankly not all his ducks in a row. Lack of attention to detail, artistic copying, and wanting nothing more than to have sex with his actors were issues that seemed to plague him consistently.

So, it's a bit of a put on when Craig tries to make it seem like there's a guy with a fully formed sense to things here. Part of the fun of Andy is that he's not always fully in control. He's expressing himself but leaving a peak hole open or 2 for you to see something ragged on the other side. A good example is his self loathing homosexuality. Almost all the gay men in his films are objects of scorn and weak creeps who do nasty things to keep living in a gutter of one form or another. At the same time, they're placed on the same level as anyone else in his films. It's egalitarian in a roundabout way.

Craig tries to turn this into a Paul Morrisey meets Kenneth Anger style artist. Frankly put, Andy had no benefactor. He was never funded the way those guys were. He cranked out fantastic trash films with just enough substance to be artisticly interesting. It's hard to pull some of the stuff out here that Craig does honestly. Andy didn't include nudity and violence cause he just felt like it. He did it cause he needed money. The closest you get to maybe what Andy was genuinely interested in was maybe Nightbirds and Vapors and even those films have a producer demanded sex quota to meet.

All that said Craig definitely goes for it here. I can't fault him for lack of effort. I'm not really the audience for this either. I'd say part of the issue with the book is Craig injects himself and sometimes his politics into the matter. Basically, he wants Andy to agree with him. He can't possibly enjoy the work of a raving loon who made trash films to barely make rent. He contradicts himself occasionally too. It's typical of these kinds of collegiate style discourses where they seem to be still thinking it out as they go. Technically when you got such a huge uphill battle (Andy himself wasn't exactly a paragon of championing himself really), it makes sense that they would stumble about.

One of the best things about the book though is his sources. If you want to find new stuff on Andy, you got stuff here to run with. You also get to learn about all manner of weirdos and maniacs along the way. Craig does his best to set Andy in context of his various contemporaries and gives you all manner of other whack jobs to choose from.

It's not bad. It's not good. It's interesting. If you're a Millgan fan, you could do worse.

Pandering to the Ignorant

The Confession of O. J. Simpson

David Bender was a contributing editor to a magazine that went out of business. He has worked in politics and entertainment for decades. He dedicates this novel to his mother. The “Author’s Note” explains the inspiration for this 1997 novel. He tried to create fiction that would make the Simpson case comprehensible. It matches the stories from Talk Radio and the Tabloid Press (p.x). [Why was the Simpson case given more play in the press than the JFK murder thirty years earlier?] Was the reaction to the verdict the result of race or the source of information? Freed and Briggs wrote “Killing Time”, the history by two who were not involved in the trial. [Why does no one mention Robert Blake, who was at the murder scene?] Why was the result in the civil suit different? California passed a law that required a jury to accept the charges in a criminal trial as factual (even when the jury rejected it!). It was a question of opinion triumphing over facts, propaganda not reality (p.xii). “None of the events or statements in this novel are true”; you’ve been warned.

The plot of this book is that O. J. Simpson, found guilty in a civil suit, will admit to murder in exchange for not having to pay $13.5 million in penalties. [I remember that Simpson’s assets were in a pension and a trust fund that could not be taken by a law suit, judgment proof.] But OJ wants to admit guilt in a way so he can’t be legally punished. In this novel OJ shows temperament (Chapter 2). Was this conversation created to cause dissension? Chapter 3 tells about OJ’s family. We learn about Sam Roosevelt (Chapter 4). The following chapters show Bender’s skill in fiction. He weaves fact and fiction to create a credible story (as long as you don’t know the facts). Will they make a TV movie out of this story? How many would watch it? How much does Bender really know about that unsolved murder? Its like the Prosecution’s story that the jury rejected.

Chapter 12 tells of a meeting between Nicole, OJ, and Ron Goldman. Using tape recordings to carry the story sounds like a new technique. So why was Goldman driving Nicole’s car? Did he have a California license? Is some fact hidden here? There is little mention of Keith, Nicole’s boyfriend for the last year. Chapter 13 tells how Nicole was cheating on her Federal Income Tax return by claiming a rental deduction for the home she lived in! Who was her tax preparer? Chapter 14 begins with a clever dream. Then a drive from San Francisco through Daly Ciy to Colma (a city of cemeteries). Chapter 15 tells how it could have happened. A “little after ten” he got a phone call and drove to Bundy at 11:15. A few minutes later Nicole was attacked with a Swiss army knife! Then Goldman was attacked and stabbed. Next Nicole was killed.

This version is contradicted by the known facts. Ron left work at 10 pm and walked home to change out of his black pants and white shirt. Ron ate something (food in his stomach). He walked a few blocks to get a car, drove to Nicole’s place, then parked a few blocks away. [This is SOP for any clandestine meeting.] Did he drive anyplace else? I estimate the earliest time he could have arrived after leaving work at 10 pm would be 10:40 pm. OJ was at home when the limo driver rang his door bell at 10:45 pm. No one saw a cut on OJ’s hand then or on the flight to Chicago. There is little mention of Keith here. Did he closely resemble Ron so there was a mistake in identity in the dark? The ME’s report said the murders occurred after 11 pm, and, two knives were used: a single edged blade (like a hunting knife) and a pointed double-edged blade (like a stilletto). Two knives means two men. Did anyone have a motive to attack Keith when he visited Nicole? Why did he go into hiding for months? Why was his picture never published in the news? “Killing Time” goes into these details. Bender’s story is only believable by those ignorant of the facts. Steven Singular’s “Legacy of Deception” tells who planted the baggy, stick, and glove; and the blood evidence was tainted. Read them for yourself.

Was this confession invented for money (Chapter 16). Bender invents a story to account for the missing bloody clothes and travel bag. Where are those “ten-thousand dollar checks”? Wouldn’t the police check his bank records? A knife can be tested for blood even after being washed clean. Bender invents a cute trick for disposing of that knife! The written confession was not a crime (Chapter 17). Sam and OJ go to LA to confer with Dan Petrocelli and Fred Goldman. The legal agreement papers are signed. Will there be a double-cross for a dramatic ending (Chapter 18)? There is another media sensation. [These distract people from the real news.] Chapter 19 tells of the aftermath, there is another media circus. [Think of “The Front Page” or “Switching Channels”] There is a surprise statement from OJ. [Is this believable?] Would it be allowed in court? Chapter 20 ends this novel. Is the verdict believable? Then Sam destroyed the evidence. Did he do it for the children?

Later there was an event where OJ Simpson was paid to talk to a man who said he was a witness to a barking dog. OJ’s conversation was recorded on cassettes and then transcribed. Afterwards the cassettes were destroyed so there was no evidence to what was actually said. This led to the book “If I Did It”. There was a squabble over the monetary rights. The Goldman’s came to LA from Chicago. Fred’s second wife had been married to a drug dealer convicted of murder. After he was released from prison in early 1994 he came to LA. Was Fred a salesman for X-rated videos? Kato acted in an X-rated movie and was then blacklisted from other acting jobs (he had been a star football player in college). Did Ron have a record for driving offenses? Whose car did he use that night? Where can anybody find these facts?

Thank you Warren Ellis

Undoubtadly one of the best and most prolific writers in comic history, Warren Ellis, who has given us the classic Transmetropolitan series, had an unheralded run on Hellblazer, and crafted classics with Planetary and his current run on Ultimate Fantastic Four, has crafted something really special with Ultimate Nightmare. I've never been much of a fan of Marvel's Ultimate line, and besides Mark Millar's Ultimates has anything else in the Ultimate universe impressed me, but Ellis weaves a tale that begins and ends with some cataclysmic results. It all begins when every communications device and psychic on the planet receive an image of an alien race being obliterated, and the source of the signal is traced to Tunguska, Russia. Professor Charles Xavier sends three of his X-Men; Wolverine, Jean Grey, and Colossus to investigate, while Ultimates leader Nick Fury, along with Captain America, the Black Widow, and Sam Wilson (with Falcon wings in tow) check out the source as well. I won't ruin the twists and surprises in store, but all I'll say is that longtime Marvel fans who may have been turned off by the Ultimate line will be in for a real treat here. The art by Trevor Hairsine is great as well, and his rendering of the signal received all over the planet is simply chilling. All this sets the stage for Ellis' next Ultimate mini-series, entitled Ultimate Secret which introduces Ultimate readers to another old time Marvel icon.

A good read... nice addition to the "Ultimate" storyline

This was a fine read, with some very effective sequences... The story starts with Earth being bombarded by an intergalactic SOS signal which depicts the annihilation of a highly civilized alien species. Images of their destruction, with corpses piled high in a manner reminiscent of the Holocaust, flood the planet, taking over every broadcast device on the world. Not only do the images interrupt out lives, so does the emotional content of their mass death, with their anguish and fear broadcast on every frequency known to man. A wave of fear and suicidal depression follows, prompting a response by Nick Fury's SHIELD and Professor Xavier's X-Men, with both groups being clueless about the real cause of the "attack." The story unfolds gracefully, aided by striking, hyper-realistic artwork. Best of all, I thought, was the cold, lethal efficiency of the SHIELD agents, which may take some readers by surprise. I found this book thoroughly entertaining... definitely worth checking out!

Creepy and really well done but a tad slow

I liked Ellis's work on Ultimate Fantastic Four and I liked the teams being used here (a small squad each from the X-men and the Ultimates) so I picked this up. The writing is very well done and there's a classic horror movie/sci-fi vibe to it that builds up to a nice climax. With a nice small team each of the characters gets a few moments; I particularly like the interaction of Logan and Jean Grey and Falcon and Captain America. On the down side its just a little slow (decompressed style) and there quite a few pages thrown away story-wise.

However the art is excellent and apart from a few scenes makes all the superfluous splash pages worth it. I'd never heard of Trevor Hairsine before but he works really well with the mood of the story, from the creepy red/dark tunnels in Russia to the wide open shots of Falcon in the jungle or Helicarriers in transit. It all looks damn good. My only complaints are that Jean Grey's hair isn't colored red very well at all throughout most of the book and Logan looks a bit too much like a shaggy dog, but those are minor nitpicks.

Well worth picking up for any Marvel fans interested in a sci-fi/horror adventure and a great take on Galactus.

I read this book whilst on holiday and couldn't put it down. What an amazing story about Stephanie's journey. It's a roller coaster of a ride and one that will have you hanging onto your seats!

A tour of potentially fatal mental states with a hopeful ending

I'm not often comfortable when writers delve into their darkness - addictions, depression, suicide attempts - and speak about them so honestly - shining a light into that darkness, so to speak. Something about this author's matter of factness of description, however, brought me methodically into her world and made the subject matter intense and vivid but never lurid and exploitative. I felt I was accompanied the entire time by a clear eyed survivor who had made it through her own hell and lived to tell the tale. Well worth the read.

I've handed this book out to several young patients who are LGBT and dealing with mental health issues, and abusive relationships. It resonated so keenly with one patient that he made a point of calling to tell me he'd made some changes in his own life after reading it. It's well written and an absorbing read. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

Deb Curtis: Deb Curtis is an experienced infant/toddler caregiver, preschool and school-age child care teacher, CDA trainer, Head Start education coordinator, college instructor, and assistant director of a child care program. Deb now works directly with children in classroom settings. She holds a master's degree in human development from Pacific Oaks College.

Margie Carter: Margie Carter is an experienced preschool, kindergarten, and primary school teacher; curriculum developer; High/Scope trainer; child care director; and college instructor. In the last decade, Margie has focused her attention on working with directors to develop strong administrative systems that support reflective teaching. Margie holds a master's degree in human development and leadership from Pacific Oaks College.

Together, Margie Carter and Deb Curtis have designed and taught college-level classes, worked side by side with classroom teachers, produced professional development videos, and coauthored seven Redleaf Press books. They cofounded Harvest Resources in 1994 as a partnership to inspire early care providers and educators to engage fully in their own learning. This book heightens the need for and effective approaches to the most important role of effective observation. The book highlights really seeing and seeking understanding of the complex, amazing and delightful behaviors or children. It can make you better as an observer of and supporter of children and their families.

Enjoyed using the digital copy of this book. It was significantly less than purchasing a book on campus. The only thing I would add is that the pages do not coincide with the hard copy of the book. Overall, great experience I don't know why I ever bothered with the bookstore on my school campus. I will be purchasing most of my books like this in the future.

About the Author

Johan Swinnen is Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), Brussels, where he directs the programme on EU agricultural and food policy. He was previously Lead Economist at the World Bank and Economic Advisor at the European Commission. He consults for the OECD, FAO, EBRD, UNDP, IFAD, and several Governments and was coordinator of international research networks on food policy, institutional reforms, and economic development. He is President-Elect of the International Association of Agricultural Economists and a Fellow of the European Association of Agricultural Economists. He holds a PhD from Cornell University. He has published widely on political economy, institutional reform, trade, and agricultural and food policy. His latest books are Political Power and Economic Policy (Cambridge UP), Distortions to Agricultural Incentives in the Transition Economies of Europe and Central Asia (World Bank Publications), and From Marx and Mao to the Market (OUP and Beijing UP)

beer around the world ... the industry, that is

This collection of papers looks at the beer industry across time and around the world. It is a useful update / extension to the good industry study by The US Brewing Industry: Data and Economic Analysis: Data and Economic Analysis (MIT Press, 2009).

For example, T&T themselves contribute a chapter tracking the rise of imports and craft beers in the US between 2000-2010, as well as the completion of the long process of consolidation that has left 80+% of the market in the hands of InBev and SABMiller. This is paired by a chapter on beer and antitrust by Ken Elzinga and Anthony Swisher, that provides a different perspective on the merger process. Another short but nice chapter is by Lisa George on the role of TV advertising in fostering a national market.

On the international front, a chapter on Belgian beer notes the huge variety, the shifts in demand (such as the near-disappearance of weak "table" beer that was once served with primary school lunches!) and the rise of the brewer that became InBev. Other chapters look at China, Russia and Eastern Europe; I found the latter interesting for its discussion of vertical integration, as foreign investment led to investment in hops processing and technical consulting to hops farmers, since reversed as local skills improved.

These are very much economics studies, generally from an industrial organization perspective. They're well-written and while there is little direct cross-talk between chapters (as I would phrase it, this is still an edited volume, not a "book") the quality is high and there is a good mesh of coverage. Those merely interested in beer may find parts overly dry, and of course won't know how to read a table of regression results. Even so, the presentations of market evolution in a variety of countries might even interest them. For me, it's a great supplement to the Tremblay and Tremblay volume, which I'm using in my fall 2012 industrial organization course.

Drinking beer is better

A collection of papers. None of them in detail.

Very poor quality of data. Authors mainly discuss data available in other academic publications. They use market shares from different sources and then compare them.

All over the place. Some data from the US, some from Germany, and hey, why not throw in some from Belgium and China as well.

If you are interested buy The US Brewing Industry: Data and Economic Analysis instead. A much better book

It has therefore seemed to me that what is needed at first is not the science of ornithology,—however diluted,—but some account of the life and habits, to arouse sympathy and interest in the living bird, neither as a target nor as a producer of eggs, but as a fellow-creature whose acquaintance it would be pleasant to make. Naturally I have drawn on my own observations for much of the matter contained in this book, but these have been supplemented by consultation of recognized authorities in the various fields of ornithology

About the Author
Sally Moomaw: Sally Moomaw, EdD, is an assistant professor in early childhood education and special education at the University of Cincinnati. Previously, she was a preschool teacher and the director for professional development at the University of Cincinnati's Arlitt Center. Dr. Moomaw holds a bachelor's degree in music, a master's in child development, and a doctorate in special education from the University of Cincinnati. She is the co-author of eleven books on early childhood education, including the More Than...series and Lessons from Turtle Island. She also designed a Mathematics Tool Kit for the Ohio Department of Education to help teachers implement state content standards and has presented numerous workshops for colleges, school districts, and conferences throughout the country.

Provides background, lots of ideas and examples

If you are an early childhood educator looking for some help engaging your students in STEM activities without having to break the bank or use up all your spare time, this could be the book for you. After providing some helpful background on what STEM is, this book is full of easily-implemented, age-appropriate activities that will help you bring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into your classroom in meaningful ways. There are chapters on STEM Learning Centers, STEM throughout the Classroom, STEM Outdoors, STEM in a Project-Centered Curriculum, Quick STEM Activities, and STEM-Based Field Trips. Each activity includes necessary materials; a description; a summary of the science and mathematics content; connections to technology and engineering; and comments and questions you can use to support inquiry with your students. I recommended this book to teachers with whom I worked in an Integrating Mathematics and Science in Grades K-8 Professional Learning Community, and participants who used activities were enthusiastic about the resulting learning in their classrooms. This is a well-written and useful teacher's resource book.

Great activity book for kids!

This book is fantastic! It's basically a science recipe book for children. All of the activities have clear directions and list why they help develop math and science skills. I highly recommend it for teachers in 4+ age groups. Some activities are appropriate for 3 year olds but not all. Even if you're a mom looking for more fun, educational activities to do with your kids, this is a great book to use!
