Les graves auteurs du Dictionnaire de l'Académie (dernière édition de 1835) n'ont pas trouvé pour ce mot-là une meilleure définition que celle-ci: «Abandonnement à l'impudicité.» Avant eux, Richelet s'était contenté d'une définition plus vague encore: «Déréglement de vie;» mais peu satisfait lui-même de cette explication, dont l'insuffisance accuse la modestie, il en avait complété le sens par une phrase moins amphibologique: «C'est un abandonnement illégitime que fait une fille ou femme de son corps à une personne, afin que cette personne prenne avec elle des plaisirs défendus.» Cette phrase, dans laquelle les auteurs du Dictionnaire de l'Académie ont puisé leur définition, ne dit pas même tout ce que renferme le mot Prostitution, puisque l'abandonnement dont il s'agit s'est étendu, en certaines circonstances, aux personnes des deux sexes, et que les plaisirs défendus par la religion ou la morale sont souvent autorisés ou tolérés par la loi. Nous pensons donc que ce mot Prostitution doit être ramené à son étymologie (Prostitum) et s'entendre alors de toute espèce de trafic obscène du corps humain. Ce trafic sensuel, que la morale réprouve, a existé dans tous les siècles et chez tous les peuples; mais il a revêtu les formes les plus variées et les plus étranges, il s'est modifié selon les mœurs et les idées; il a obtenu ordinairement la protection du législateur; il est entré dans les codes politiques et même parfois dans les cérémonies religieuses; il a presque toujours et presque partout conquis son droit de cité, pour ainsi dire, et il est encore, de nos jours, sous l'empire du perfectionnement philosophique des sociétés, il est l'auxiliaire obligé de la police des villes, il est le gardien immoral de la moralité publique, il est le triste et indispensable tributaire des passions brutales de l'homme. C'est là, il faut l'avouer, une des plus honteuses plaies de l'humanité; mais cette plaie, aussi ancienne que le monde, s'est déguisée tantôt dans les ténèbres du foyer hospitalier, tantôt dans les mystères des temples du paganisme, tantôt sous les voiles décents de la tolérance légale; cette plaie infâme, qui ronge plus ou moins le corps social, a trouvé dans la philosophie antique et dans la religion chrétienne un puissant palliatif, sinon un remède absolu, et à mesure que le peuple s'éclaire et s'améliore, le mal inévitable de la Prostitution diminue d'intensité et circonscrit, en quelque sorte, ses ravages. On ne peut espérer qu'il disparaisse tout à fait, puisque les instincts vicieux auxquels il répond sont malheureusement innés dans l'espèce humaine; mais on doit prévoir avec certitude qu'il se cachera un jour au fond des sentines publiques et qu'il n'affligera plus les regards des honnêtes gens.

Solid review of management techniques

I actually bought book to familiarize myself with management processes for an upcoming assignment. The text is a touch dry for my taste, but that's probably just my non-expertise in the subject matter. Overall, the text is very informative and probably best for anyone who has a need to study/review/otherwise think about how business owners and managers "make smart decisions."

Learn why bad decisions happen to good managers -- and how to make better ones

This is one in a series of volumes that anthologizes what the editors of the Harvard Business Review consider to be the "must reads" in a given business subject area, in this instance making smart decisions. I have no quarrel with any of their selections, each of which is eminently deserving of inclusion. Were all of these article purchased separately as reprints, the total cost would be $60 and the value of any one of them exceeds that. Given the fact that Amazon now sells this one for only $, that's quite a bargain. The same is true of volumes in other series such as "Harvard Business Review on...." and "Harvard Business Essentials." I also think there is great benefit derived from the convenience of having a variety of perspectives and insights gathered in a single volume

In all of the volumes in the "10 Must Read" series that I have read thus far, the authors and HBR editors make skillful use of several reader-friendly devices that include "Idea in Brief" and "Idea in Action" sections, checklists with and without bullet points, boxed mini-commentaries (some of which are "guest" contributions from other sources, and graphic charts and diagrams that consolidate especially valuable information. These and other devices facilitate, indeed accelerate frequent review later of key points later.

Here are three brief passages that are representative of the quality of the articles from which they are excerpted as well as the quality of the other seven articles in this volume.

From "Before You Make That Big Decision...," Daniel Kahnerman, Dan Lovallo, and Olivier Sibony: "The real challenge for executives who want to implement decision quality control is not time or cost. It is the need to build awareness that even highly experienced, superbly competent, and well-intentioned managers are fallible. Organizations need to realize that a disciplined decision-making process, not individual genius, is the key to a sound strategy. And they will have to create a culture of open debate in which such processes can flourish."

From "Conquering a Culture of Indecision," Ram Charan: "The setting in which h dialogue occurs is as important as the dialogue itself. The social operating mechanisms of decisive corporate cultures feature behaviors marked by four characteristics: openness, candor, informality, and closure. Openness means that the outcome is not predetermined. There's an honest search for options, alternatives, and new discoveries. Questions like `What are we missing?' draw people in and signal the discussion leader's willingness to hear all sides. Leaders create an atmosphere of safety that permits discussion, group learning, and trust."

From "Make Better Decisions," Thomas H. Davenport: "Focusing on decisions doesn't necessarily require a strict focus on the mental processes of managers. (Though, admittedly, the black box deserves some unpacking.) It can mean examining the accessible components of decision-making - which decisions need to be made, what information is supplied, key roles in the process, and so forth. Smart organizations make multifaceted interventions - addressing technology, information, organizational structure, methods, and personnel. They can improve decision making in four steps." Davenport discusses step in process, then observes: "An organization that has adopted these four steps should also assess the quality of decisions after the fact. The assessment should address not only actual business results - which can involve both politics and luck - but also the decision-making process and whatever information the manager(s) relied on"

About the Author
Otto Kroeger is a bestselling author and expert in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(r) (MBTI(r)) Assessment. He served as president of the Association of Psychological Type International and is a current member of the National Training Laboratory Institute of Applied Behavioral Sciences. Kroeger has coauthored four leading books on personality: "Type Talk", "Type Talk at Work", "16 Ways to Love Your Lover", and "Personality Type and Religious Leadership".

Thuesen is Managing Partner of Otto Kroeger Associates. She conducts seminars on interpreting typological skills. She has been a teacher and counselor and has served as Assistant Director of Organizational Development at the White House.

Knowing Your Type

Have you ever walked into a co-workers office and asked them a question as they first look at you with a glazed look, and then ask you to repeat the question? Have you dealt with a people who take forever to answer anything? How about trying to understand individuals who seem to be somewhat unfocused and a bit scattered in their conversation?
The book Type Talk is a great introduction to understanding the personality make up of these types of people and basically everyone else.
This book breaks down the 16 Myers Briggs Types to come up with an introduction to individuals who want to know why people do the things they do.
For individuals who know types through the MBTI, this book will assist you in understanding the type of almost anyone you talk with, and be able to relate better with them. For someone who has not been through the MBTI, this book will allow you to be introduced to personality types without animal names, colors or something that sounds like a sickness (phlegmatic....ahem....)
You will come to understand and reflect on how someone who tends to be more Introverted or Extroverted, Sensing or iNtuitive, Thinking or Feeling, Judging or Perceiving and how a combination of the above will determine how people tend to relate to the people in their lives, how they approach life in general and daily.
This book could help everyone to understand the world we live in.
One thing though, don't put people in a box. If someone is considered one of the 16 types, that is not a box they are in, that is the reference they usually feel most comfortbably working from.
Thuesen and Kroeger bring together their years of research and have a lot of documentation for back up and instruction.
A must book if you are in Human Resources, Training or Education or if you love the differences that make up the human race.

good objective presentation of Myers-Briggs theory

The chapters on the 16 profiles is the best presentation of each type that I have seen. It clearly shows that each has a great contribution to make to our society, that no type is BAD. The titles of these chapters are:

Can't put it down.

This book is an amazing introduction to Typology. I started reading it and could not put it down. There is so much useful information in this book that can only help you when you have dealings with others. It can also help you learn a great deal about yourself. The authors pointed out that was the main purpose of this book.
For example is was able to determine that I am a INFP. I also learned that it's very uncommon to be an INFP, being a male. I was also able to learn what types of work envoirnments I work well in, what types of careers people with my type are attracted too, what other types I correspond with best, and much more. Also finding out that all of my poor Introverted people were persecuted for being so quiet, and often recieved constant day-to-day pressure to get out and be normal (so I'm not alone). Not realizing that this behavior could not be more normal.
This book is a very easy and enjoyable read. Everything is well organized and laid out. The authors use alot of conversation examples between different personality types, often a riot to read, it also makes a point about different types of people, which really helped me the most. This book has so much to offer, everybody can benefit greatly from it.

Short but sweet (and tasty)

This book contains very useful information about a variety of sea vegetables, mostly from the North Atlantic (if I recall, this book has strong ties to Maine Sea Coast Veggies). Very basic recipes demonstrating the versatility of sea veggies - from breakfast to dessert. The only books that I enjoy more (demonstrating the usefulness of sea veggies) would be Cathe Olsen's "A Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook...." and "The Garden of Eating".

Celebrate Seaweed

This is a nice introductory book about sea vegetables, which includes recipes. I was not interested in this book's recipe aspect. To be honest, I have not looked at this book's recipes. I was primarily interested in this book's (1) introductory essay, (2) "resources" list, (3) nutritional chart, and (4) bibliography.

One of this book's authors is the co-founder of Maine Coast Sea Vegetables, one of the few sea vegetable companies in the U.S. This small company harvests all of its own sea vegetable inventory, which gives its authors extensive "hands on" knowledge and experience. Most sea vegetables marketed in metropolitan Washington, D.C., where I live, are packaged by Maine Coast Sea Vegetables.

When Japan was devastated by a massive tsunami several months ago, Japan suffered a severe scarcity of sea vegetables. One source Japan contacted, to obtain an emergency replacement supply of sea vegetables, was the Maine Coast Sea Vegetable company - which complied with Japan's request.

There is a "resources" section on page 156 of this book, which lists sea vegetable companies in the U.S. - and their websites, phone numbers, and addresses. If you are a neophyte with sea vegetables, you can call the companies listed in the "Resources" section, and people there will chat with you and answer your questions.

There is an extremely valuable, detailed nutritional profile of each sea vegetable species, on pages 154-155 of this book - this nutritional profile chart is worth the entire price of this book. The book also has an important bibliography.

ADDENDUM (May 23, 2012):

My three star rating for this book may have misled - or discouraged - some AMAZON.com customers, which I regret, because this is a good book, particularly on the profoundly neglected subject of edible sea vegetables.

I intend to keep my copies of SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION as well as Valerie Cooksley's SEAWEED. I have discarded the 4 or 5 other books about edible sea vegetables I once owned, none of which merited a three star rating or higher.

My interest is in the unique nutritional and cooking properties of edible sea vegetables. Therefore, this book's first 43 pages is what primarily interests me. My original review states that the "Nutritional Analysis" on pages 154-155 is worth the ENTIRE price of this book - this is NO exaggeration: "A NUTRITIONAL CHART IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS!"

SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION is primarily a recipe book: 113 pages out of 156 pages are recipes. My original customer review specifically states that I was not interested in the recipes, and that I did not even look at the recipes.

I have now looked at SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION's recipes. I noticed a clever, innovative attribute. All these recipes note - in BOLDFACE type - the specific type of sea vegetable utilized in each recipe. Since I have only used kelp/konbu, wakame, and dulse in significant quantity, these recipes' BOLDFACE type identifies other specific sea vegetables I should cook with, when I want to experiment.

I also now appreciate that recipes for sea vegetables are not simply more generic recipes (which was my initial attitude, when I dismissively ignored the recipes in this book), but that sea vegetables are unique cooking ingredients which require unique consideration in recipe selection - inappropriate recipes just don't seem to work. It took me time to realize this.

I have posted a "customer review" of Valerie Gennari Cooksley'a book entitled SEAWEED on this AMAZON.com website. Valerie Cooksley's book cites, as a "resource," SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION and Maine Coast Sea Vegetables, and specifically credits Maine Coast Sea Vegetables' co-founder Shep Erhart (co-author of SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION), as "having a significant hand in the content" of Valerie Cooksely's own book.

A major reason I gave a higher "star" rating to Cooksley's SEAWEED, in preference to SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION, is that Cooksley's SEAWEED has a much more spacious format - as in, e.g., paragraphing, "resource" listings, etc., and very wide margins for making notes (which I have done) - there is no "crowding" of material. There is also a significant difference in the quality of materials used in publishing - for which there is also a corresponding price differential.

Another selling point for SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION is that, unlike Valerie Cooksely's SEAWEED, Shep Erhart, a co-author of SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION, is co-founder of Maine Coast Sea Vegetables, a mail-order firm and one of the few U.S. edible sea vegetable companies. Maine Coast Sea Vegetables is a "resource" from which AMAZON.com customers - who do not have ready local market access to sea vegetables - may acquire extremely healthful sea vegetables for their own cooking. Listings of mail-order resources, for sea vegetables, is an unusual and rare point to make about a book!

Aside from SEA VEGETABLE CELEBRATION and Valerie Cooksley's SEAWEED, I have retained my Japanese cookbooks, which always contain a mandatory section on sea vegetables. However, Japanese cookbooks do not contain the nutritional information about seaweed that I seek.

Great theological wisdom here, written in a personal way. Valuable to anyone not allergic to "reformed theology". The translation used seems better than some others I have seen, and I suspect it might be "the best". The format of the book is exactly right to fit its contents. I've given away quite a few copies of this.

Introduced in 1563, the Heidelberg Catechism became the standard in German and Dutch Reformed Churches. The HC is held in high estimation for it's devotional quality as well as it providing a clear exposition of the Christian Faith. I cannot sing it's beauty enough. I love it.

I've seen some odd reviews and I'm not sure if they have the same product. While I cannot speak for anyone else, I can say that this is an excellent resource. It's pocket-sized and very thin (maybe 1/3 inch wide). It's perfect for quick and convenient, hand-held reference. As such, it's not designed for in-depth study. There is no table of contents, but those who are familiar with the Catechism likely do not need it. It is a Reformed exposition of Christian doctrine. It covers guilt, grace, and gratitude and is written in a warm, devotional style. It is arguably the most beloved of catechisms in Protestant history, rivaled only by the smaller Westminster Shorter Catechism.

This edition has a brief introduction, and is divided into the standard fifty-two Lord's Days. There are Scripture proof text references for doctrinal assertions. And, it has a smooth, Tru-tone style cover. So, it's a stylish, convenient, properly organized, superior expression of Reformed doctrine laced with Scripture texts. What's not to love?

Journals MUST Be Read in Conjunction with Poetry

"The Journals of Sylvia Plath" is essential reading for those who truly desire to get to the heart of Plath's brilliant poetry. Because she is one of the innovators of "confessional" poetry (along with her friend and contemporary, Anne Sexton), the direct inspiration for Plath's verse is nothing less than her very personal life, and without a grasp of that life, it is impossible to fully appreciate the poetry. The "Journals", incomplete though they are, are the very best source of insight into the intricate workings of a mind of pure genius as it both processed and reacted to the numerous hurdles that life threw its way. Of course, it was precisely how she struggled with these hurdles that Plath painstakingly versified and concealed under layers and layers of metaphorical language and complicated structural schemes, the end result of which is poetry that at once screams of raw truth while actively challenging the reader to channel all of his/her faculties toward the difficult but exhilarating task of excavating this truth from the artistry. But even apart from the poetry, Plath's "Journals" is quite simply one of the most beautifully written and heartrending works of American prose of the twentieth century.

Another reviewer wrote that this book was a big disappointment - that it stinks. How can one criticize someone's journals? I'm pretty sure Plath didn't expect these to be published one day - and so she didn't write them for the general public to read. These words are honest, riviting, disturbing, wonderful, priceless.

The Journals of Sylvia Plath are an undisputible link to the base of her poetry. For a journal of a life, the entries are incredibly written and interesting. I have been very interested in her death by suicide which was the reason why I picked up these journals in the first place, but I found myself underlining sentences of her different viewpoints on life, ironically. If you you want to figure out about how Plath wrote her poetry and what events formed the woman who is such a mystery today, read this book. The only place where I thought that the diaries lacked was that all the information was not included. Some of her most passionate outrages and angry words have been taken out which I think are definitely a key to her poems that we do not possess. I am aware that the people in the journals must be protected but hope that the full works will be published in the future. The first half of the journals while Sylvia was in college have spoken to me and given me words and reasonings for my feelings that I had not been able to form myself before. I think any college student would benefit from reading her viewpoints and beautiful words. Anyone who is interested in the author will be impressed.

Great book to learn Group Policy

What can I say...If you want to learn about Group Policy and how it works, especially on the new Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 - this is the book for you.
First the bad: You're going to need to setup a few computers to go along with this book. They can be old PC's from your office , virtual computers on a Server or virtual computers on the Internet. They will give you info on how to do this in the book.

Why these computers? Because you're going to be following along in the book and applying everything you learn to these computers. You will set new policies and then test them on the different operating systems and users from this network of computers you created. So now you see in real time how Group Policy actually works and what it does. To me that's what makes this book so great; your applying everything you learn right away to a real computer network. So now you can see these changes actually take place which not only helps me remember what different settings do but now I better understand why and how it works.

I enjoyed Jeremy Moskowitz writing style which provided humor at times but also explained in plain English subjects of Group Policy I just never understood properly until I read this book.
In the end you will learn everything from the basics to the most advanced settings. Plus there are plenty of web links and references to other material in the book, so you will have plenty to go on after your done with this book and may want more advanced learning.

Group Policy Content Good - As a Kindle Book Not as Good

This is the Bible of Group Policy as far as I am concerned. A must read. A good reference to go back to.

1. Great information.
2. Great Examples you can follow as you read.
3. Good tips on gotchas and covers multiple versions of Windows.
4. Kindle form made it easy to take with me and read.
5. Extra chapters were good.

Some of the not so goods:

1. I got it in Kindle format, and the diagrams and graphics sucked! I could not get a lot of them to show up very good no matter how I formatted it on the screen.
2. You would think book marks would help going back, but I found it better if I copied the bookmarks to my One Note and then kept them there.
3. Extra chapters as I said were good, but I was a bit exhausted from reading it, and I will have to go back and read again.

Rocky start

I've struggled with getting started with this book. The recommended lab is fairly complex to set up to be prepared to run through the examples, requiring several machines. You're best off if you've got an MSDN or Technet subscription and access to a powerful workstation or server that can run several virtual machines at the same time, if you want to actually run through the labs.

The start of the book tries to dump a lot of complex information quickly in a style that is very atypical for technical textbooks. The author's examples are entertaining but can be challenging to tie into the intended take-away. Sometimes the author's asides, analogies, quips and banter can be distracting from understanding the point. This could just be a challenge in that his writing in enjoyable enough you forget you're trying to learn about Group Policy, not about the particular sidebar the author is on about.

Finally, the chapter one examples naming conventions in the charts and figures do not match the naming conventions used in the text - requiring you to spend extra time thinking about which server the text is referring to compared to what the server is labeled in the chart. In particular, the domain is labeled corp.com and widgets.corp.com in the graphic, and referred to as example.com and widgets.example.com in the text. Likewise the corp.com DCs are COPRDC1 and CORPDC2 in the image - but EXAMPLEDC1 and EXAMPLEDC2 in the text. There are numerous other examples like this. In the introductory chapters where you're trying to understand some complex foundation concepts, having to work through this is distracting.

About the Author

Dr. Dean T. Spaulding is currently an assistant professor at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where he teaches educational research and program evaluation. Dr. Spaulding is the former chair of the Teaching Evaluation SIG for the American Evaluation Association. He also has been a professional evaluator/researcher for fifteen years and has in-depth experience serving as an evaluator on multiple state and federally funded projects. More specifically, he has conducted evaluation for programs focusing on K-12 settings, the use of technology in the classroom, as well as working in the area of teaching and learning with at-risk youth populations. At the government/state agency level, Dr. Spaulding has conducted research and provided programmatic feedback for New York State Department of Education, New York Sate Department of Public Health, and the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). Dr. Spaulding also is one of the authors of Methods in Educational Research: From Theory to Practice, 2006, Jossey-Bass Wiley, San Francisco, and the author of Program Evaluation in Practice: Core Concepts and Examples for discussion and Analysis (2008), Jossey-Bass Wiley, and Action Research for School Leaders (2012). Dr. Spaulding is also a consultant at Z Score Inc. dspaulding@zscore.net

Gail Smith, a native of Brooklyn New York, received her BA and MS at State University College at Oneonta, NY. She received her masters’ in education administration at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Her thirty-six year career at an upstate New York urban school district included positions as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and deputy superintendent of schools. In 1988, Gail was one of five finalists for New York State Teacher of the Year. After retiring, Ms. Smith worked for two years as an administrator at two different schools on Native American reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. She returned to her home district in July 2008 to work as a consultant and mentor for their Instructional Leadership/Instructional Coaches project. She also is the proud mother of three children.

Great Guide for Instructional Coaches

I recommend this book to any teacher taking the challenge to become an instructional coach for their school. The book offers numerous ideas along with useful recommendations for success. I am considering buying for the principal as well.

From a new instructional coach

Entering a new position, I consulted this book for an introduction to some new ideas to bring to my job. The book offers great suggestions and constructs for the instructional cosh position, and it also includes journal entries from a building principal, an instructional coach, an a classroom teacher. This book is a great place to start for instructional coaches!
