I bought this for my 4 yr old to get him ready for our trip to Scotland. He loves the simple rhymes and beautiful pictures. This is a really great way to introduce a young one to a wonderful culture.

A great advance for object relations theory and practice.

Dr. Kavaler-Adler has made a significant contribution here to object relations theory and practice. This book in highly readable and you can clearly experience the application of theory to actual cases. I have read this book cover to cover and have reread many chapters. If you are a therapist and interested in object relations, then this book is for you. Dr. Kavaler-Adler provides an excellent review of the development of object relations theory and introduces new concepts, especially her valuable work on regret and developmental mourning. This book is written very clearly and I think that it would be a valuable read for students of psychology as well as all those interested in that inner world that we develop in early childhood and how that world follows us into adult life.

The Royal Road of Regret

That deepest part of the sleepless night, when a person dares to wonder – Is it me? – might help unlock doors separating the heart and mind, the self from others, and a soul from its heart’s desire.
Is it me? Is this question a courageous search for self-awareness? Or a dangerous descent into the self-doubt seeded when the mother looked away from the infant and ignored her cries? When the mother was not good enough, was not attuned; and the infant could not develop strong, solid and confident without that foundation?
Does the question herald a night of self-blame? Or hours tallying others’ crimes: I’m okay. It’s them. Or, might the question precipitate a realistic and successful grieving of losses – a necessary developmental journey – allowing for growth?
Alone, it might be impossible to navigate successfully that dark terrain. But, having the right guide – an attuned therapist -- can make the difference. Then the client might be able to face, acknowledge and grieve the hole of his missing foundation, and connect the walled-off rooms of his psychic house. This healthy self-integration, Kavaler-Adler explains, is “a psychological state in which one can be both separate [from others] and creative, as well as internally connected and loving, a state … coined as the love-creativity dialect.” p. xviii
"The Anatomy of Regret" explains the role of regret in the needed developmental mourning process. The reader witnesses Dr. Kavaler-Adler working with her clients so they can mourn their losses and lost opportunities, then self-connect and form successful loving relationships with others. She demonstrates the process by detailing nine case study vignettes of clients’ struggles with psychic regret. "The Anatomy of Regret" is “a journey into the deep levels of psychic change, which can occur when the grief of regret can be faced consciously.” p. 230
This “psychic regret” is more than an intellectual exercise, a defense against painful awareness, or self-blame. It is not supernatural, or self-punishment, or martyrdom. Through it “one moves beyond mental, neurotic, and self-attacking modes of guilt to the conscious experiencing of the ‘grief of existential guilt’ that takes place in the body, in clear visceral experience …. To feel the grief of regret is to be embodied. Tolerating such grief, related to the pain of compassion towards those whom one has hurt (including the hurt towards one’s own self) is a manifestation of a separate and individuated self …” pp. xvi-xvii
The reader can be inspired by Kavaler-Adler’s evolving theory of developmental mourning and the role of regret. With healthy grieving, the question “Is it me?” has an answer, and can open the door to “making peace with internal ‘bad’ objects,” allowing “for a rebirth of self into full emotional presence,” where “life becomes a vital endeavor of love and creativity evolving in the ‘now.’” p. 231

I do not see the role of the analyst as a passive one. Rather than assuming we know what the patient means by a commonly used word, such as regret, we explore what it means to the patient, what it signifies to him or her personally. We pay attention to it as a signifier. Dr. Kavaler-Adler explores how pivotal the conscious facing of regret and its depths as a signifier is to personality change within an evolving mourning and object relations clinical process. The presentation of many cases adds to the richness of the underlying theoretical formulation. These cases include wide range of personality types from neurotic to schizoid, both male and female.

About the Author
John M. Yumoto is perhaps the foremost authority on the samurai sword outside of Japan. A native of California, he began his study of Japanese swrodcraft during his early childhood in Japan. While in Japan he studied under a number of masters from different schools and learned the art of sword polishing and of identification and evaluation. He has held membership in a number of sword clubs and at present is an active member of the Japan Society for the Preservation of the Samurai Sword and the Northern California Sword Club. He has also been requested to serve as advisor to the Japanese Sword Society of the United States, presently being organized.

Somewhat dry in presentation...

This is a fairly serious overview of Samurai swords intended for someone who is interested in collecting them (or perhaps has inherited one). That is, this is quite a 'theoretical' book intended to convey, in a quite concise manner, the myriad of details needed to identify Samurai swords.
The book goes through a very brief overview of Japan's sword history including some very rough information on the swords produced in various time periods. Mixed in here is a tiny amount of non-technical information in the form of some tales of how the special clay-coating heat-treating process was invented.
The book then presents detailed information on such subjects as blade curvature, temper lines, tip profile, tang markings and finishing. This section has a number of line drawings that do help convey the information in a clear and simple manner.
This leads into a very in-depth section with the Japanese characters that could be found on a sword tang. This section is quite long and, considering the book's purpose, not really very useful to the majority of people. That is, without understanding Japanese you really aren't likely to be able to use this section - it would be much better to consult with someone who does understand Japanese.
I really had hoped for more of an overview of the history with some details on the more famous crafters. There is also very little information on the manufacturing process other than some very cursory paragraphs and drawings. I agree that this subject deserves many books but I also think that since it is not really highlighted in this volume, a beginner will have no real reason to understand WHY certain eras and smiths were regarded so highly. That is, without more background on the process one is left asking the question "what is wrong with a stainless-steel blade?".
One for the serious collector but you will definitely need other books on the subject to really get an appreciation of the remarkable nature of the Samurai sword.

The "Definitive" guide to the Samurai Sword

I was once told "If you are interested in buying a real samurai sword buy this book read it once and then read it again and again." There is probably no other book, in english, that has as much info on antique samurai blades as this book. A must for anyone interested in sword collecting or even a serious martial artist.

If you own ONE book....

This book is exactly what you need to understand the factors that determine rarity and value. It contains a comprehensive delineation of the varieties of each sword part, maker dates and places, and a good dose of relevant history to the development and use of the sword.
This is not the ONLY book you need - but it should be the first.
This small investment can literally save you thousands in mistaken purchases...you will quickly see why you should save your money, i.e. don't buy several $400 swords from Ebay, and rather purchase the "special" (albeit expensive) blade.
There are too many hoaxers out there, and you need to visualize your purpose. Do you want a fragile 15th century relic? A modern (and very pricey) blade of Iaido practice? A WWII (and prior) collectible? What's the difference?
Why be able to read the maker's mark? What difference doe it make? Do you want the master's blade, the student's blade or the machine made? Better find out the difference before you invest.
Would you buy coins without a Redbook? Stamps without a Scotts'?

About the Author

Lynne Schrum is Dean of the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education at Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Previously, she was the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services at West Virginia University. Prior to that, she was a professor and coordinator of elementary education in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. Her research and teaching focus on preparing teachers for the 21st century, appropriate uses of information technology, and leadership in a digital world. She has written eleven books and numerous articles on these subjects; the most recent is How 2, Web 2: How to for Educators. Schrum served on AERA’s Council, was editor of the Journal of Research on Technology in Education (JRTE) (2002-2012), and is a past-president of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

Barbara Levin has been a Professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) since 1993. She was an elementary school teacher for 17 years before earning her Ph.D. at the University of California-Berkeley. Dr. Levin served as the Director of the Teachers Academy at UNCG, assistant department chair, and director of graduate studies. She was awarded the first Mentoring-Advising-Supervising (MAS) Award in the School of Education at UNCG. Dr. Levin also served as an Associate Editor for Teacher Education Quarterly for 8 years, and was co-PI on a 5-year, $1.4 million National Professional Development grant from the Dept. of Education called TESOL for ALL. Her research interests include: understanding how teachers’ pedagogical beliefs develop across their careers; case-based teaching; problem-based learning (PBL); universal design for learning (UDL); and leading, teaching, and learning with technology. Dr. Levin has published eight books and over 40 articles in well-respected research journals.

About the Author
Jeffrey Levinton is Professor of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University and has worked for many years as a researcher in marine ecology and as a textbook writer in marine biology. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fulbright Senior Fellow and has done research and lectured at many institutions throughout the world. He is also the recipient of the State University of NY Chancellor's award for excellence in teaching. John Waldman is Professor of Biology in the City University of New York. He is a well known fisheries scientist and is the author of a number of popular books in natural science. Before coming to Queens College of the City University of New York, he worked for 20 years as senior scientist of the Hudson River Foundation.

Powerful and insightful

What a realistic (and painful) insight into Hollywood realities! A reluctant Hollywood where within a system the common people as a social backdrop reveal a desperate 'nothingness' cohabiting with the ostentatious 'everythingness'. Not only does Wight demythologise the system in a fierce but touchy humanistic manner, he also, in his engaging demeanour, forces ourselves to question the US and the world policies at stake after 9/11. In this book Wight fight for his dream, and later for the human rights as an anti-war activist.
Wight's emotional reaction to the Hollywood system does not come with a huge display of drama, rather it is released with a mere pinch of the right words he uses so the reader is carried away in many kinds of emotions, sometimes with just one line, which can come up as very intense.
We feel his despair, but also his determination. A lesson for a lot! We walk in his shoes, we want to leap with him into the dream in which reality sadly start engulfing itself. The pace is quick, the style is vivid, the mind is sharp and his humour distilled appropriately.
This book deserves some attention as it changes the way I looked at Hollywood and its grandiosity. It could well be a metaphor of our lost dreams, but also the one for an ongoing dream, a dream for a better world this world where human nature, morality, religion and politics still make the world go wrong.
Step out of your comfort zone, read it, live it even if the 'dream it' bit is out of the way.

A Real Glimpse into Hollywood

A well written story of inner strength and conviction in a world that can crush you. If you've ever wondered what Hollywood is really like from the perspective of one of the millions of aspiring actor/writers chasing a dream, read this book. John Wight takes us behind the scenes on his journey to become a screenwriter in Hollywood and the personal, often humiliating, sacrifices he has to make to survive. He describes in gritty, vivid detail the world of the tinseltown extra, the spirit crushing job of the hopefuls and hopeless. Set during one of America's darkest moments when the 9/11 bombings lead way to the war on Iraq, John calls upon his inner strength and conviction to stand up and fight for what he truly believes in.

Entertaining and true account of a Scottish screenwriter's foray into Hollywood. When reading, you feel like the author is sitting besides you telling story after story, some funny, some painful. Much of the book is written during the time of Operation Desert Storm, Wight manages to weave his political views and his work with A-list actors in an engaging and amusing way. More depth than most Hollywood tales, more entertaining than most Op-eds. Well done!

The story takes a turn after Eva lets Addie know that she'd like to be more than friends and is rejected. Addie begins to find notes telling her to quit the team and that no one likes her. She isn't especially alarmed, but things get serious when Coach Berg tells her that she is being dismissed for harassing fellow teammates. Hoblin explores homosexuality without using the words "gay" or "lesbian," forcing readers to pay close attention. This story will reach many readers, not just reluctant ones. In Out of Sync, Madison 8 Wong's name includes the luckiest Chinese number, and she is known as "Mad Dog" to her teammates. She and Dayton have been friends since they were six years old, playing soccer and doing everything else together. Now that they are sophomores, though, Maddie aims to score high on the field and on her SATs, but Dayton essentially wants to find herself and uses her energy to get fake IDs for a popular nightclub. Maddie is concerned about Dayton's lack of interest in the game and its effect on their friendship, but she's caught the eye of recruiters for Division-1 schools. This is a dramatic, heart-wrenching tale of a soccer friendship gone wrong, horribly wrong ...

Addie Williams and Eva Riley were best friends, least ways they were for a long while until things started to change. It all started when Eva came up to her and asked, "Wanna play soccer?" It was a little surprising because Eva was such a girly girl. You know, high heels and the works and a ton of makeup. She could play a mean game and they ended up both playing defense for Fraser High's Copperheads. Coach Berg viewed "the defense as one unit" and they were for a long time. They even had their own code words to let each other know where they were on the field. "Whoop!" Just a shout and they were there for each other.

Mr. Landers caught Addie "juggling a ball while [she] was supposed to be in class so many times" that she actually got suspended for a week. Addie, well, she was just Addie and she loved her game. The action on the field was hot and intense, especially when she and Eva were playing and Alyssa Duncan, the goalie, was shouting out directions. Teamwork was the ultimate and they had it down pat. There were hints of trouble, but Addie just didn't see them. Eva was always grabbing her hand when they were alone and it seemed innocent enough so she let her. Was it something that would come back to bite her?

"I'm sorry, I don't feel the same way you do." Yeah, it would come back to bite Addie because Eva was not only shocked and hurt, she was irate. A lot of the things Eva started to do were more annoying than anything, but that didn't last long. There were those nasty notes, quite unlike the little affectionate ones Eva used to send her. There was the one in her locker, supposedly from Coach Berg. "You suck at soccer and life. Do us a favor and quit." Huh? It was like they had to pump it up on the field and play as one, but soon it looked like Addie's happy days were over when it looked like Eva was trying to sabotage her. What could she do to remedy the situation? Was it wise to report the harassment even if Eva was her "former best friend?"

This is a dramatic, heart-wrenching tale of a soccer friendship gone wrong, horribly wrong. The story, told from Abbie's vantage point, flashes back and forth to the time when both girls were fast friends. The inability to remedy a situation gone wrong is one that many young people face. Situations, not always as deep as this one, are sometimes difficult for young people to deal with, especially if they are being bullied. The sexuality issue was dealt with quite well and although Addie had the support of family, friends, and her school, this unexpected situation floored her. This is a fast, pensive read that many young people can relate to. This is a short tale that reluctant readers will be able to navigate easily. If you have a soccer fan who likes high-action, dramatic reads as fast-paced as a hot soccer game, this is a series you may wish to consider!

Machine on a Mission

I really enjoyed this TPB. War machine's attitude in recent books is becoming quite similar to the Punisher's. His attitude isn't the only thing changing, War Machine has gained the ability to assimilate any technology into his war armor. In this book, they take that ability to the extreme and he turns in to many different things including a tank and a jet. Personally, I think they took this a little to far. The art in the book was excellent, and the story was great. You do learn quite a bit about Rhodes' history. I must add that, the best part of this book come with the battles with and against the god of war: Ares!

War Machine Turns Transformers

In a world without Iron Man, James Rhodes is a one-man army trying to keep order in a warmongering world where moral ambiguity and greed rule.

War Machine himself has moral doubts, but deep down he's still a hero trying to keep things in balance.

His goal is to reclaim his humanity but whether that will happen remains to be seen...

War Machine is one of the most consistent and violent Marvel titles out there - a cool blend of Iron Man meets Deathlok the Demolisher meets Transformers. (Does anyone know why Marvel made him so similar to Deathlok?) Part machine and part man, War Machine uses his in-built bazookas to blast 'em up - and is now able to morph himself into different war machines by pulling on available scrap weaponry around him - a very nice touch to the series. While earlier incarnations of War Machine's armor were simply clunkier versions of Iron Man - he's now a full fledged arsenal with his own powers, having "transformers" like abilities to change his appearance.

Ares the God of War adds a nice kick to this epic battle which incorporates the undead, viral technology, a love triangle, Tony Stark's ex girlfriend, mercenaries, innocent people and of course, the kitchen sink.

The appeal of the War Machine series like many of Marvel's running plotlines is its dark world and ala Deathlok the Demolisher, the quest for Rhodes to find his own humanity. War Machine remains a solid if ugly alternative to Iron Man...

All Action

This run of War Machine is almost exactly what it should be. The Art is incredible by Leonardo Manco, it's a perfectly sketchy gritty look but with clean lines and clear details of all the mechanics. There's some great splash pages. The Transformers inspired style for War Machine to adapt from the pieces of surrounding tanks or jets is genius, and plays off well. The whole first arc is pretty much intense action. It's awesome to see Ares with a machine gun, too. The story by Pak is decent and will appeal to fans of his Hulk run. But it's not on the level of Fraction's Iron Man right now. Since most readers will be coming from that camp, including myself, it's a little disappointing. There are hints of Rhode's past which are nice, but brief. And the subject matter for the present day is in the category of relevant current world events and terrorism but is never developed beyond caricature of those things. I wanted more. I had higher hopes for how they handled the terrorist corporation in a third world country stuff. And the plot is pretty basic, but fast and full of action. I don't mind that, but it could have slowed down a little to develop more meaning in all these events. They throw the words and rape and murder around too superficially for them to ring with any depth. It only refers to these rough topics without exploring them deeply. Still, Pak wanted to go crazy on action, and he follows through on that for sure, if nothing else. If that's all you want, you won't be unsatisfied. The art alone carries this story.
