an insightful book

China, A Travel Adventure

I was so delighted to have come across this beautifully produced book written by Lorien Holland. I first met the author in 1993 while we were both living in Beijing. She was studying Chinese then. Upon her request, I introduced her to a Chinese family that she could stay with, an ordinary Beijing couple who lived in a very cramped two bed-room apartment with their newborn baby. How she managed to fit into this family and communicate with them in her beginner's Chinese, I didn't know exactly. I did know that she drastically improved her Chinese. Even as a stranger in a new land, I was very impressed with the way she had always managed to find unusual and interesting places to visit. For example, after hearing of a temple dedicated to the Goddess Nuwa in Henan, an obscure place few have heard of, she made a trip there and came back with some amazing pictures to prove so.

Here in this book, she is once again making use of her talent for discovering unknown and unusual sights. She takes the reader through the wonderfully hidden and not so hidden corners of China, from Yangshuo down in the south with its poetic river and limestone pinnacles, up to Jiayuanguan in the north, marking the beginning of the famed Silk Road and the ending of the Great Wall; from the glittering grids of skyscrapers in Shanghai, to the layered fortress of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Interestingly, the book doesn't focus on the more `exotic' areas of China such as Tibet or Xinjiang, but rather, mainly on the Han areas where the majority of population resides. In the last chapter on travels off the beaten track, Holland suggests Wolong, hometown to China's giant pandas. I recently visited this region with an Austrian TV crew, chasing a panda that has been released back to the wild. I very much enjoyed its unspoiled scenery and the rustic charm of the Tibetan villages that dot the land. I doubt a writer without much China knowledge would have recommended a place like Wolong.

The stunning photos and well-written captions complement each other like green leaves and red flowers. The essays explaining China's long history and rich culture are insightful and evocative. Again, I love the little personal touches Holland includes in the book. For instance, she describes the way locals stared at the tall blond girl upon her arrival in China, the first of many novel experiences she would collect over the years. Many westerners find such curiosities exhibited by Chinese people off-putting or annoying. Holland obviously looked beyond such annoyance and found the fascinating aspects of China. One that she now generously shares with us.

This is a wonderful work, which has captured the spirit of China. It is a joy to read and a treat for your eyes. For those who have not been to the Middle Kingdom, it will wet your appetite; and for those who have been, it serves as a beautiful reminder of you China adventure.

Amazing China

Right from the first pages one gets a good perspective of this great country.It is beautifully illustrated with some truly amazing photography.There is not too much reading to be done because the story and beauty of China is told through the photos.It covers all aspects of China from the cantons,to the countryside and then to the cities.Every aspect of Chinese life is told through photos.They say a picture is worth a thousand words,and this is truly applicable to this book.A must have for anyone interested in the subject.

Huge, Beautiful, Colorful, Exciting, Panoramic Photos!

This book may be dated 2006, but, once you see all of the beautiful, huge, and colorful photos, you'll be so impressed the age of the book won't matter! It even has a huge panoramic view of the central area of Hong Kong within the book--it accomplishes this by it being rectangular shaped (the book's over 9 1/2" lengthwise by 10 3/4" widthwise). There's a big detailed map at the beginning of the book, and, a small map at the end. I definitely recommend this book, you'll love it!

A comprehensive collection of their writings under the cover of one handy volume. Light in weight - heavy in content, but you get the data directly from these philosophers themselves for this is their original material. Makes you feel like a serious student of philosphy and the effort used to duplicate them will serve you well in your future ponderings. An important collection and a must if you wish to study the GREAT EMPERICISTS.

Just the poor paper and printing make a difference

Excellent work done many many years ago, but still helpfull if you want to understand understanding.The empiricists is , in my view a code that I could do without. Locke had wonderful insignts, as early as 1630 in things we still can discuss.Berkeley and Hume did several things on their own, but it is good to have the esssential ideas all together in one book.
Only the poor presentation rests merits to the publisher, but give it a try, speciall y in this price.

About the Author
WILLA CATHER, author of twelve novels, including O Pioneers!, My Ántonia, and Death Comes for the Archbishop, was born in Virginia in 1873 but grew up in Nebraska, where many of her novels are set. She died in 1947 in New York City.

travels to everywhere

I have just finished this book; I have always admired Willa Cather's writings. I began reading her books in high school, this was assigned reading.

This book contains nineteen short stories plus her unfinished Avignon story. The book begins with her earliest stories, three of them, and named the "Troll Garden". These stories were published in 1905. Next comes eight stories, named "Youth and the Bright Medusa" from 1920; the next "Obscure Destinies" containing three stories and published in 1932, published in 1948 "The Old Beauty and Others", this group contains three stories,and last "Five Stories" published in 1956 of which there are only two and also the 'Unfinished Avignon Story'.Ms. Cather seemed to love the Great Plains, France and the southwest, to me it seems that her best stories were set in these places.

One story is 'Paul's Case written in Pittsburgh where she was teaching; this story is contained in many anthologies. This story is from Ms. Cather's observation of youth, frustration and wanting more from life than that which is commonplace. As so many other characters in the book they wanted more than what life offered. There was a middle aged, heavy set business man who disliked singers and other arty people and was forced by his wife and her friend to attend a concert. This story is comical.

The stories contain characters reaching out for more in life, to be more, to get more. There are characters who admire artists and realize they can never be artists and surrounded themselves with those in creative fields. One story contains a woman who opens her large, beautiful, ostentious home to members of the art world such as poets, singers, sculpturs,painters. These people were taking advantage of her and using her as a figure of fun. The story's name is 'Flavia and her Artists'. There are stories from the Great Plains, a young person from a farming family observes and admires two of the town's wealthiest men. There is another about a good hearted, talented singer who is used by those around her. Some stories are told by observers who tell the tales. There is a story concerning several young boys who promised themselves and boasted to their companions that one day they would climb a mysterious bluff. Years passed, the boys became men, however, none of them ever did as they bragged they would do. Ms Cather wrote of the vast, strange unknown country of the southwest, a part of the country she loved and was fascinated by.

The reader meets a myriad of people of these stories.

The story of Tom Outlander's strange town built by an ancient Indian culture eons ago that Tom happened upon. This was a marvelous, other world town, very beautiful, very sophisticated place. Strange, but the ancient Indians were intelligent, well beyond their times, but many other ancient peoples also were.Tom fell in love with the ancient culture and was angry with his best friend for selling all the artifacts they had collected. The descriptions of the New Mexico mountain landscape is beautiful, readers can almost visualize these places.

In these stories the reader is taken to different times and places. the Great Plains, large cities, different countries, differnt types of people, those who are and those who wannabe.

Great read. Highly recommended.

Cather Classics

Willa Cather is my favorite female author. Cather writes with deep understanding of human emotions and strong characters. She reveals the struggles and successes of the early pioneers and transcends the decades with her relevant themes of poverty, diligence, determination, education, devotion, grief, joy, and eternal values. This volume contains one of my favorite short stories, "The Best Years", a poignant tale of a tragedy that ends in peace and reconciliation.

Everyone needs to own a Willa Cather book and this one has lots of gems in it. I don't know if she is taught anymore in schools but if not a true loss for the students today. Her writing is warm, human and finely crafted. A good buy for a good book!

Significant barriers to cooperation persist, however, despite acknowledgment that public–private collaboration for managing disasters would be mutually beneficial.

Managing Disasters through Public–Private Partnerships constitutes the first in-depth exploration of PPPs as tools of disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and resilience in the United States. The author assesses the viability of PPPs at the federal level and explains why attempts to develop these partnerships have largely fallen short. The book assesses the recent history and current state of PPPs in the United States, with particular emphasis on the lessons of 9/11 and Katrina, and discusses two of the most significant PPPs in US history, the Federal Reserve System and the War Industries Board from World War I. The author develops two original frameworks to compare different kinds of PPPs and analyzes the critical factors that make them successes or failures, pointing toward ways to improve collaboration in the future.

About the Author
Ami J. Abou-bakr is a lecturer in politics in the Department of Political Economy at King's College London. She holds a BS from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and a PhD in public policy from King's College London. As a "practitioner academic" who spent several years working in the US financial sector before returning to academia, her research is directed toward informing policy decisions and influencing public and private sector decision makers.

Review for A tornado of Dorothys

I choose this rating because it wasn't awful but had a lot of potential of being a great short story. The idea of the story was interesting and intriguing but still needed a little more mystery. All in all the book was fine and I think anyone who loved the classic will enjoy this fun read.

About the Author

Kim L. Anderson’s career path has been a diverse and divergent one. Prior to obtaining a graduate degree in social work from Washington University in St. Louis, she was a freelance writer, photographer and graphic artist with interests in “outsider art,” expressions of oppression and liberation beyond conventional artistic borders or boundaries. After many years of private practice as a licensed clinical social worker, clinical supervisor and educator, Kim received a post-graduate certificate in art psychotherapy and now is a board certified art therapist.

She is the author of Culturally Considerate School Counseling: Helping Without Bias, published by Corwin Press in 2010. Ms. Anderson presents her eclectic work at numerous local, regional and national events and venues, engaging her audience through compelling narrative, careful research, evocative experiences, and instructive storytelling.

Bonnie M. Davis, PhD, is a veteran teacher of more than forty years who is passionate about education. She taught in middle schools, high schools, universities, homeless shelters, and a men’s prison. She holds a doctorate in English from St. Louis University and is the recipient of numerous awards, including Teacher of the Year in two public school districts, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Anti-Defamation League’s World of Difference Community Service Award. She has presented at numerous national conferences and currently works in school districts across the country.

Dr. Davis’ work centers on examining what “we don’t know we don’t know” about ourselves in order to more effectively teach students who don’t look like us. Moving from self reflection to action, her books offer educators culturally responsive, standards-based instructional strategies that bridge culture, language, race, and ethnicity.

Dr. Davis’s publications include the How to Teach Students Who Don’t Look Like You: Culturally Responsive Teaching Strategies(2012);How to Coach Teachers Who Don’t Think Like You: Using Literacy Strategies to Coach Across Content Areas (2007); The Biracial and Multiracial Student Experience: A Journey to Racial Literacy(2009); and Creating Culturally Considerate Schools: Educating Without Bias (2012) with coauthor Kim L. Anderson. She is currently working on the Equity 101 Series with Curtin Linton, Executive Vice President of School Improvement Network.

Visiting home from her city life, Caley Lambert is found in bed with her old-neighborhood-friend, Jake Burton. Amusingly, her teen-aged brother has no compunctions about announcing it to the family over breakfast. After the not-so-innocent encounter, Caley and Jake each begin to realize that after 11 years, there is more to their feelings for each other than either of them initially realized. Not wanting their families to know, they get together in secret and begin an affair.

During their time together they reminisce about their relationship since they met at the age of thirteen. As the relationship progresses, they come to realize they've really been waiting for each other all along. But how could they pursue anything long term when she has a lucrative job in the big city while he lives in a small town?

A good sexy story that will nostalgically bring you back to your teenage years while keeping you romantically and humorously entertained.

Oh that's nice

Caley and Jake have known each other since childhood. They grew up together and spent their summers together at their family's summer homes. As a teenager, Caley had a crush on Jake and when she was 18, right before she left for college, Caley tried to take their relationship to another level. However Jake turned her down and mortified, Caley went to NY to college and stayed there, never seeing Jake again after that fateful night.

It's now 11 years later. Caley's younger sister and Jake's younger brother are getting married and Caley and Jake are both in the wedding. What will happen when Caley sees Jake again? Will she feel anything for him? Well, she's going to find out really quickly as this book is part of the "wrong bed" series where in this case, the heroine exhausted from her long flight accidently gets into a bed where she thinks her sister is but instead the hero is there.

Harlequin romances can be a hit or miss proposition. So many can be a miss - the books have little character development and concentrate instead on the sex. Or they have more character development but the sex isn't steamy enough, you just don't care about the characters, or the situation is just plain silly.

Your Bed or Mine is a hit. It takes on the familiar plot of a couple who knew each other when they were younger and meet again years later. Combine that with the "wrong bed" premise so that the "what will happen when the meet again?" question gets answered very quickly. However, instead of just concentrating on the sex (which you would expect with the wrong bed premise), the author does a great job of creating interesting characters that you can relate to, along with realistic conversations and situations. Don't get me wrong - there's some steamy sex. But it flows with the story and the characters.

This is one of those romances that after you read it, you think "oh, that was nice." This was my first Kate Hoffmann book and after reading this, I'll be sure to check out more of her books.

This was a very short story that was stretched out unnecessarily into a full book for no reason. It was overly nostalgic and very slow. The two main characters obsessed over a past that was just a misunderstanding of smaller magnitude than the book gave it credit. The synopsis and cover was a lot more exciting than the content.

Taryn J. Souders lives in Winter Park, Florida. With a background in math education, she is passionate about keeping math fun for young students. This is her first children’s book.

Our local library has several copies of this and it is wonderful! Having a child who is terrified of math and especially of fractions, this book was nothing short of just plain sensational! Taryn Souders really captures the potential fun that learning can be, even for something as "scary" as fractions. This book is cheerful, funny, colorful and most important, makes learning the concept lots of fun. As a further bonus, she provided the answers in the back of the book so that kids can see how well they were doing. It is a real confidence builder.

Beautiful, Fun, and Informative

My son's first grade teacher said that they are going to begin with fractions this year. My son loves math, so I thought he would love this book.

At first he thought it looked too babyish for him and he didn't want to read it. But mom is usually right, and when he did read it, he enjoyed it. We laughed along together at some of the silly illustrations and situations, and he liked using his brain to try to figure out the fractions. By the end of the book, he really got the idea of how to figure out the top part and the bottom part of a fraction.

Great book! There's also a teacher's guide available at the author's website [...] which would be great for teachers, homeschoolers, or just for home enrichment.

Math Made Fun!!!

We have thoroughly enjoyed having this book as part of our kid's collection! My girls both enjoyed the colorfully animated pictures, along with the riddles. I have a daughter with some learning disabilities and she found this to an entertaining way to go about Math. I could tell she even enjoyed seeing if she got the riddles right!! :) Thank you so much for putting your knowledge and creativity into a book that can help our children to learn and love math at the same time. Great job on this book! Looking forward to another book in the future, hopefully! :)
