Eleven Days, by Lea Carpenter

Powerful and lean, Eleven Days is an astonishing first novel full of suspense that addresses our most basic questions about war as it tells of the love between a mother and her son. When the story opens on May 11, 2011, Sara’s son, Jason, has been missing for nine days from a Special Operations Forces mission on the same night as the Bin Laden raid. Smart, young, and bohemian, Sara had dreams of an Ivy League university for Jason that were not out of reach, followed by a job on the Hill where there were connections through his father. The events of 9/11 changed Jason’s mind and Sara accepted that, steeping herself in all things military to better understand her son’s days, while she works as a freelance editor for Washington policy makers and wonks.

Now she knows nothing more about Jason’s fate than the crowds of well-wishers and media camped out in the driveway in front of her small farmhouse in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, waiting to hear news. In a series of flashbacks we learn about Jason’s dashing absentee father, a man who said he was a writer but whose career seemed to involve being in faraway places. And through letters Jason writes home from his training and early missions, we get a picture of a strong, compassionate leader who is wise beyond his years and modest about his abilities. Those exceptional abilities will give Jason the chance to participate in a wholly different level of assignment, the most important and dangerous of his career. At the end Sara will find herself on an unexpected journey full of surprise.

This is a haunting narrative about a mother’s bond with her son; about life choices; about the military, war, and service to one’s country. Lea Carpenter, a dazzling new talent with the kind of strong and distinctive voice that comes along all too rarely, has given us a thrilling and unforgettable story.

From Publishers Weekly
A woman falls into the national spotlight when her Navy SEAL son goes missing during a highly classified operation in Carpenter's debut novel. Sara, an art student who landed a secretarial job in D.C, and David, a mysterious government official 30 years her senior, find themselves expecting a child during a complex love affair. Sara elects to keep the baby—naming him Jason—and becomes a single mother when David dies in the Middle East of undisclosed causes. She raises Jason with help from various "godparents", David's friends and coworkers who predispose the naturally brilliant child to the military at the youngest of ages. After the September 11th attacks, Jason's decides to attend the Naval Academy , marking the beginning of a sacrificial quest that, after nine years, he plans to end after one more mission—the mission in which he disappears. The novel profiles the first eleven days of Sara's grief journey, and is filled with characters who exist on the edge of emotion. With poignant prose and an impeccably structured narrative, Carpenter's novel is the sweet pitch before the violin screeches; the concluding state of reverence for a world we can't control and a song for the war in Afghanistan that provides comfort without reason. (June)

From Booklist
Tension builds in Carpenter’s spare debut as single mother Sara awaits news of Jason, her Navy SEAL son, missing in action on a top-secret mission. Their story is reduced to very nearly its barest bones, told mainly via Jason’s letters home and his and Sara’s reminiscences. Carpenter succeeds in making Sara an Everymother as she tries to reckon how her bookish, poetry-loving son could choose a career path that puts him in mortal danger with every overseas tour. She eventually reasons that she “had not lost a son on 9/11; she lost him later to something she could not provide at home.” But it is clear that what she and Jason’s deceased father each did give their son—whose teammates nicknamed him Priest—prepared him for nothing less than personal greatness, the kind of personal greatness that makes the best Navy SEAL. Subtle clues and a couple of plot twists sustain the story’s tautness until its emotive climax. --Donna Chavez

Review

Praise for Lea Carpenter's Eleven Days

“Masterful. . . . Lea Carpenter’s debut novel, Eleven Days, tells a story that is at once timeless and also grounded in the very real vicissitudes brought about by current events. . . . She has written a tremendous novel that serves as a valuable contribution to our nation’s literature about warfare.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“A deeply affecting story about a mother and a son that attests to the debut of an extraordinarily gifted writer. . . . Ms. Carpenter has written a novel that maps—much the way that Jayne Anne Phillips’s classic Machine Dreams and Bobbie Ann Mason’s In Country did—the fallout that war has not just on soldiers, who put their lives on the line, but also on their families, who wait anxiously back home.”
—The New York Times

“In simple but stirring prose . . . an elegant meditation on the love between a mother and son whose worldviews changed forever after 9/11, in very different ways.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“A novel of stillness and reflection. . . . Carpenter’s greatest accomplishment here may be her success at creating an Olympian warrior who seems entirely human, modest and decent. . . . Carpenter’s intelligence and sincerity find powerful expression in the novel’s sophisticated structure. . . . This story reminds us that each of these warriors, no matter how brave and tough and deadly, is still some woman’s beloved son.”
—The Washington Post

“Carpenter provides a convincing portrait of an exclusive and exclusively male military subculture.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“Assured debut. . . . [An] affecting portrayal of maternal love at a time of war.” —Vogue
“Carpenter’s incisive, graceful novel is certain to vault to the top of any list of high quality literature about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
—The Daily Beast

“A compelling story made memorable by the strength of its elegant prose.”
—Toni Morrison, author of Home

“The finest analysis of special operations I have ever read.”
—Ambassador Frank G. Wisner

“Eleven Days is a powerful, moving read: Jason and his Argonauts reborn as Navy Seals. But it is far more than just a compelling story; it’s a window onto the new world of 21st century warfare.”
—Anne-Marie Slaughter, author of Keeping Faith with our Values in a Dangerous World

“What Denis Johnson did for the Vietnam War in Tree of Smoke, Lea Carpenter does for Iraq and Afghanistan in her superb Eleven Days. She drills deeply into the culture and lore of special operations warfare, and just as deeply into the minds of the people—the military-intellectual complex, if you will—who ultimately determine the American way of making war. But at the core of this extraordinary novel is the love of a mother for her child. That’s the story of us all, and that’s the story that may well break your heart.”
—Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

“An extraordinary accomplishment. Written with an elegant precision, this book is at its core a story about love: between a mother and a son, a son and a father, and a special group of men for each other and the imperfect country they choose to serve.”
—Kevin Powers, author of The Yellow Birds

“A beautiful, and original, work of art. Eleven Days manages to be both a meditation on courage and a gripping read. Scholarly and stylish, displaying a capacious mind and even greater heart. A magnificent debut.”
—Alexandra Styron, author of Reading My Father

“Not only a dramatic, affecting and wholly original story about war from a woman’s point of view but an incisive look at the experience of special operations.”
—Doug Stanton, author of In Harm’s Way and Horse Soldiers

“Powerful, moving and beautifully written, this story of a mother and her son shows us how 9/11 has changed our lives forever.”
—Bob Kerrey, author of When I Was a Young Man

“Filled with characters who exist on the edge of emotion. . . . Poignant prose and an impeccably structured narrative.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Assured. . . . A highly moral anti-war novel without noisily announcing itself as such. . . . This well-turned story packs plenty of emotion. . . . Among the smartest of the batch of recent American war novels.”
—Kirkus Reviews

The heroine's journey
By Evelyn Getchell
ELEVEN DAYS by Lea Carpenter is a lean but intense debut novel written with a virtuoso's pen dipped deeply into the inkwell of relentless passion and penetrating focus. It is a dynamic work propelled by the explosive power of war fiction to compel the reader to ponder not only the most basic truths about the warrior's culture and the conflicts they engage in, but also the family of the warrior and the great sacrifices they must make in time of war.

Rich with literary allusion and poetic symbolism, this novel offers a keen and precise perspective of the military, war, patriotism, one's service to one's country, the military family and the complexity of the human cost of war.

As only a work of art can reveal, ELEVEN DAYS offers deeply resonating, very personal truths about military service in time of conflict as seen through the vision of a devoted mother and her warrior son.

It is not uncommon for us to make the association of our modern day military heroes with the heroes of the great mythical narratives in classical literature - Odysseus, Dionysus, Achilles, Jason. Thanks to the scholar Joseph Campbell and his masterwork The Hero with a Thousand Faces (The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell), the "hero's journey" has become a well known quest which follows a basic pattern of Departure (sometimes called Separation), Initiation, and Return. It is probably not a coincidence then that Ms. Carpenter has named the hero of ELEVEN DAYS - Jason.

Jason is a well-tested and proven warrior, a United States Navy SEAL who was one of the great numbers of young men and women compelled by their patriotism and courage to enlist into military service after the 9/11 terror attacks. He is twenty-seven when the novel opens. It is May 11, 2011 and the aftermath of a Special Operations Forces mission which was to be the last of Jason's fifth tour of duty. He has been missing for nine days.

By all accounts Jason is the "hero" of this story. Yet I prefer to consider his young, strong, intelligent, independent, and I must emphasize - single - mother, Sara, to be the real protagonist or the true "heroine" of ELEVEN DAYS.

It is a tense and suspenseful period of eleven days which marks the quest of the heroine whose beloved and only son is missing in action. Sara is on the mythical threshold of passage, awakening, and return. Her story as it unfolds and flashes back alternately with that of Jason is the story of a mother called to leave the ordinary world of home, to enter the challenging world of heart wrenching task and trial when her child is in grave danger, to go inward and process all which is destined for her and her child, to then pass outward and return to society a transformed woman...a true heroine.

ELEVEN DAYS is about many things - war history, the military, Washington, the CIA, but primarily it is about the bonding between mother and son. It is not a linear story with a black and white narrative; nor is it one-sided with clichéd sound bites and hype. It is a visceral, multi-dimensional way of expressing something organic, quotidian and universal at the same time - the love between a mother and her son.

For this reader ELEVEN DAYS is a true heroine's journey, a timely, relevant novel, impeccably researched and solemnly composed in urgent, humane prose. It is an authentic story, daunting to tell and challenging to comprehend, but nevertheless delicately balanced to resonate with sensitivity and grace.

One of the best looks into a military mindset I've read
By Nathan Webster
I have been warily looking forward to this book - wary because it's gotten a lot of advance praise, and the last time I bought into that, I was disappointed. But, the fact that it earned that pre-publication attention made me await it all the same.

It's one of the best close-up looks into what makes a military member 'tick' that I've ever read. The motivations, the dreams, the professionalism mixed with youth and cynicism all feels very real. While author Lea Carpenter has chosen the Navy SEALs as her subject matter, with a young officer the main character, I think you could fill that in with most any branch, of most any rank, and it still rings true across the board. "Jason," the SEAL in question, seems to fairly represent the ideals and life that these special operations soldiers have chosen - not in a melodramatic, overwrought way like many self-serving biographies, but in the much quieter way of real life. I'm no SEAL, but as a military veteran, I feel like on my best days this was sort of what we were all going for - most of us didn't live up to it, but we liked to think we were trying.

It's no mistake that Carpenter is not a veteran herself (though I think her father is a retired Navy captain). That distance gives the edge of objectivity lacking in a lot of veteran-written narratives. Even the recent vet-written collection "Fire and Forget," which I also really liked, is often very self-aware, not always in a good way. Without that crutch of her own memory to draw from, Carpenter relied on interviews, research and readers to help her get the story right - she does a lot of thanking in her acknowledgements, and that effort at getting it right comes through...at least for me. Again, I'm no SEAL, but the training feels real - again, NOT like some overblown Hollywood fiction.

However - the mother Sara is really the main character. She carries the narrative, and it's mostly through her experiences and observations that the story gets told. While we get Jason's story, it is presented as a flashback.

Just like with Jason, the story of Sara feels accurate and honest. I still have my mother's letters she sent me during Desert Storm, and she n-e-v-e-r mentioned the war (even when I embedded as a reporter in Iraq, "I hope you get what you went for," was the extent of her commentary). So Sara staying "ignorant," (which isn't the right word) of what her SEAL son is up to does seem totally plausible.

I am very fortunate that I read this book before it was published, and before I read any reviews. I am not talking about the plot on purpose. I will say that it took a lot of discipline for me to not flip right to the end, and I read this very quickly - which is very rare for me.

It's edited masterfully. It doesn't feel too long, or too short. It should be a lesson to writers who churn out 600-page behemoths and think "more is more." No - good editing tightens and improves the story, and so when this is described as "spare," that's a compliment.

There are flaws. Some of the letters home that Jason sent his mother sound realistic, but boy is Jason full of himself. I don't know if that's a flaw, but I don't think Carpenter wanted the reader to feel quite that way. It is a bit maudlin at times, and I absolutely felt manipulated a couple times - but I mean, is that a bad thing? I don't know. I'm annoyed when I feel that way, though.

Flaws aside, I was really impressed. I will be interested to read future reviews, because I know there are elements other readers might not like; I'll be curious what didn't work for them. But, obviously my impressions are all good.

Not too many books make me want to re-read them in the short term. But, I'm certain I'll be reading this again sooner not later.

the book is filled with treasures
By E. Christine Hess
"Eleven Days" is one of the most clever, thought about & sensitive novels I have come across : both from the understated physical format & its rich content.

The unassuming, color-less cover ( white numerical crayon marks, simple black block letters & the even more humble paper bag paper ) represents modern plainness. In contrast, the use of unevenly cut, thick pages points more to the past, it has more of a history.

Once the book has been opened, a ( to the reader ) anonymous dedication is followed by a modern interpretation of Achilles' shield. And then the author is up & "running", developing her tale. Actually it is Sara, the protagonist, who goes for a run. She is wearing a HAT ( not a cap ) & she has bright RED shoelaces, a gift from her son. These details are seductive. Especially the bright red shoelaces. Up to this point there has not been an introduction of color at all. I kept returning to the vivid image while reading the novel. By the time I read Jason's letter to Sara I felt that I finally understood. The colorful shoelaces were meant to symbolize the strong bond, bloodlines, between mother & son.

But there is much more to my treasure hunt.
While reading the story an intricately patterned "tapestry" began to unfold. "Eleven Days" bears undeniable traces of the Judaeo-Christian narrative, of medieval Marian Iconography, of Greek mythology & present day East vs West conflicts & challenges. Age old beliefs, idealism & cruelties across time & space all intertwined.

There is the youthful, basically chaste "Mommy" Sara. The name is of Hebrew, Arab origin & allegedly has the meaning of "princess", "pure" or "excellent".
The unwed, devoted mother lives in a farmhouse ( without a stable ) in a small American East coast town. She helps cultivate the open ( not enclosed ) neighbor's garden.

Sara raises Jason, her only son. His name derives from the Greek meaning "healer".
When grown, Jason shares some traits with the modern American hero Pat Tillman. Both are of the same physical height ( 5'11), both idealistically enlist after the attack of 9/11, both love books, both compose thoughtful, pain easing letters & both venture East.
In addition, Jason is being referred to as "Priest" by his men, as "Achilles" by a girl friend & his physical nearness leads to the final single outburst "Christ" .

The mostly absent, elusive and older Jewish father David derives his name from the Hebrew "beloved" or from the ancient Mesopotamian word for "shining". He finally settles in that region of the world.

The nameless "godfather" -apparently highly connected via his position in Washington- stays close to Sara, Jason & David.

And lastly there is one-eyed, steady as a rock Sam, Jason's friend.

In addition to these memorable, complex characters, carefully crafted, intriguing phrases appear throughout the novel. One of them is:
"Axis of Evil" the godfather says smiling "David never liked that phrase. He preferred "Crescent of Concern".

"Eleven Days" is a book full of treasures!

Good places to explore for a newcomer to the area, but poor directions
By Mary G,
I moved to Atlanta last fall, and bought this book after looking at the (limited) options available to me at the local bookstores. Its a decent book - some nice places to explore in the Atlanta area. Pros - they go into detail about the history of the hike and offer lots of landmarks so you know where you are. (Not that I often read them!) Good amount of general information so one can determine what it will be like. I would agree with another reviewer that many of the "hikes" aren't actually hikes. I don't really count anything paved as a hike, honestly, but that that said, they are good ideas for outings.

Cons/Wishes for change:
Directions - they are sparse sometimes, and a few times just plain wrong. Confusing left for right on major turns, or leaving out a major turn have been a few of my experiences. While often correct, I've learned to bring along another map. It would be great if they could *consistently* mention parking fees as part of the directions. Often, the fees are noted in the body of the text.
Other minor negatives: The authors note some distant hikes - like the New Echota Trail, which is 1.9 miles and probably a good 2 hours to get to, but offer no other hikes in that area. It is difficult for me to believe there are no other hikes in the Echota area (N. Georgia Mtns) and a waste of time to drive that far for a 1.9 mile walk.
I would also love to see the authors note when there are many more trails in the area. Many of the Chatahoochee hikes are filled with additional trails in the same park area, and others have none nearby at all. When I come across extra trails, I like to explore those as well, and it would be nice to have a heads up about when to leave extra time, and when the walk will be only the trails noted.

OK for basics, not great for details
By Jerry B. Ray Jr.
My girlfriend and I have been using this book for a couple of years now to pick out hikes around Atlanta. It's a good resource for finding hikes that we might not otherwise know about, but it seems to fall down when you try to use it for specific details.

As others have noted, some of the driving directions are off by a mile or more, which can be disconcerting when driving into an unfamiliar area. But the narrative descriptions of the hikes are often lacking in detail. For example, the description might say something like "start at the trailhead, and then the trail turns left," but it doesn't mention the distance between those points, so you're left to wonder if you're where you think you are in the description.

We tried to hike the Arabia/Bradley Mountain trail with the book today, but failed pretty miserably. Part of the fault is with the trail itself, which is well-marked to the top of Bradley mountain, and apparently totally unmarked beyond that point. But even following the description and the (too simple to be of anything more than basic guidance) trail map in the book, we got completely off track and ended up wandering around for an hour on Arabia Mountain trying to pick up the trail that was supposedly on all three sides of the mountain near the tree line. We finally just gave up and backtracked the way we came, having never found the trail.

In short, use the book for ideas on where to go hike, but use other sources for trail details, and don't even think about relying on the descriptions in the book to follow a trail that's not very obviously marked.

Not so good
By D. Tardelli
60 miles as the crow flies. Some of these hikes can take you hours to get to due to winding forest roads.

On the otherhand, this book also stretches the definition of hiking. A walk through the seediest parts of Atlanta may be an adventure but it is not a hike. Going to the zoo is not a hike. Centennial Park is not a hike.

Defiant Peacemaker: Nicholas Trist in the Mexican War (Elma Dill Russell Spencer Series in the West and Southwest), by Wallace Ohrt

However much the extending of America's borders may have seemed like destiny at the time, much of the process was not as noble as its early proponents declared, and in the Southwest it represented at least partially a deliberate land grab. The work of one rather eccentric idealist, a Virginian named Nicholas Philip Trist, allows modern Americans to consider what happened during the years 1846-48 without what one writer called "a thorough revulsion." Nicholas Trist (1800-74) was one of those rare public figures who really live dangerously, prepared to risk everything for principle. Generally unknown today, and slighted or scorned when mentioned at all, he was a man of importance in his time, for he defied a presidential recall order and negotiated with Mexico the treaty that won for the United States the vast Southwest. Trist was closely acquainted with the great ones of his time—including Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Andrew Jackson—and was esteemed by those who really knew him. This well-written biography of Trist is also, then, a story of many of the important people and movements of his time. Trist was an idealist, more uncompromising than his idol, Thomas Jefferson (who was also the grandfather of Trist's wife). Trist was respected by many of his contemporaries and, surprisingly for a man of his unbending character, befriended by many. Yet there were many who despised him. On two unrelated occasions, eight years apart, he stood as the most controversial figure in America. In some ways, he was his own worst enemy, as Ohrt skillfully shows. An astonishing haughtiness in a man of relatively modest station enabled him to condescend to presidents, quarrel with military commanders, and hurl insults at the House of Lords. Yet the diplomats with whom he worked in Mexico admired and respected him for his unfailing patience and courtesy under the most trying conditions. Ultimately, his career was thoroughly destroyed by its one great, defining achievement: the negotiation of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the peace that ended the Mexican War. Ohrt demonstrates that Trist's quintessential character can best be distilled in a tribute he paid to another: "He is . . . a true lover of justice." Only one Trist biography has appeared to date, and it does not cover the full life and relationships as this one does. Sources for this imminently readable biography include the voluminous correspondence of the Trist and Randolph families of Virginia, biographies of notables mentioned, and the most respected histories of the times and events. Those interested in the diplomacy of the era and especially of the U.S.-Mexican War will read with interest the story of the intrigues and rivalries behind the political and military activities of the war, which are vividly presented here.

Fast reading biography of important yet overlooked hero
By Louis A. LeBlanc
Defiant Peacemaker is a fantastic biography that covers the entire life of Nicholas Trist. Any one who enjoys a good biography will love this one. I find the subtitle 'Trist In The Mexican War' to be misleading. It is a true indepth bio of the life of a man who lost his father at a young age, married Thomas Jefferson's grand daughter, worked at various political appointed job which made him well known around Washington DC, also was Ambassador to Cuba. Trist is the only man in American history who single handedly ended a war. He negotiated the treaty of Guadaloupe Hidalgo to end the Mexican War. He never held a political appointment after. A great biography details the changes of fortunes of a life, good times and bad times. Mr. Ohrt addresses these details so well, you leave this book feeling that you really know Trist and feel for his misfortunes, especially considering the contribution he made to his country, and to know his country never recognized his efforts.

Forgotten patriot
By Roger Sherman
A great biography of a little recognized diplomat, and an ugly side of Manifest Destiny . Nicolas Trist represents another side of the American spirit. A man who did what He thought was right in light of overwhelming political forces. The decision that ultimately stopped a needless war.

Solomon Maimon: An Autobiography, by Solomon Maimon

One effect of Daniel Deronda was to make known to a wide circle of readers the vitality of Judaism as a system which still holds sway over the mental as well as the external life of men. During the few years which have passed since the publication of that great fiction, the interest in modern Judaism has continued to grow. It is but a short time since the Western world was startled by the outbreak of an ancient feeling against the Jews, which had been supposed to be long dead, at least in some of the quarters where it was displayed. The popular literature of the day also seems to indicate that the life of existing Jewish communities is attracting a large share of attention in the reading world. The charming pictures which Emil Franzos has drawn of Jewish life in the villages of Eastern Galicia, are not only popular in Germany, but some have been reproduced in a cheap form in New York to meet the demand of German Americans, and some have also been translated into English. The interest of English readers in the same subject is further shown by the recent translation of Kompert's Scenes from the Ghetto, as well as by Mr. Cumberland's still more recent and powerful romance of The Rabbi's Spell. Among students of philosophical literature a fresh interest has been awakened in the history of Jewish thought by the revival of the question in reference to the sources of Spinoza's philosophy. The affinities of this system with the familiar tendencies of Cartesian speculation have led the historians of philosophy generally to represent the former as simply an inevitable development of the latter, while the affinities of Spinozism with the unfamiliar speculations of earlier Jewish thinkers have been almost entirely ignored. In these circumstances a special interest may be felt in the life of one of the most remarkable Jews of modern times—a life which forms one of the most extraordinary biographies in the history of literature. Some account of the work was given in an article in the British Quarterly Review for July, 1885; but I thought that a complete translation would probably be welcomed by a considerable circle of English readers. The book has many attractions. If the development of the inner life of man can ever be characterised as a romance, the biography of Maimon may, in the truest sense, be said to be one of the most romantic stories ever written. Perhaps no literature has preserved a more interesting record of a spirit imprisoned within almost insuperable barriers to culture, yet acquiring strength to burst all these, and even to become an appreciable power in directing the course of speculation. The book, however, is much more than a biography; it possesses historical interest. It opens up what, to many English readers, must be unknown efforts of human thought, unknown wanderings of the religious life. The light, which it throws upon Judaism especially, both in its speculative and in its practical aspects, is probably, in fact, unique. For the sketches, which the book contains, of Jewish speculation and life were made at a time when the author had severed all vital connection with his own people and their creed; and they are therefore drawn from a point of view outside of Jewish prejudices: but they are penned by one who had been brought up to believe the divine mission of his people, as well as the divine authority of their religion; and the criticism of his old faith is generally tempered by that kindly sympathy, with which the heart is apt to be warmed on lingering over the companionships and other associations of earlier years. Maimon's account of Jewish philosophy and theology acquires an additional value from the fact, that he was caught in the full tide of the Kantian movement, and he was thus in a position to point out unexpected affinities between many an old effort of speculative thought among the Jews and the philosophical tendencies of modern Christendom.

Very pleasant reading
By S. TSALAVOUTAS
Solomon Maimon is known in the history of German Idealism as the person to whom Kant himself attributed the deeper understanding and penetration of the main problems of his Critique of Pure Reason. Moreover Maimon's internal criticism of Transcendental Idealism and his proposed solution to its major, according to him, problem paved the way for the theories of the post Kantian Idealists. So he was one of the thinkers who helped the thansformation of 'critical' to 'dogmatic' idealism. Now this may seem to many a step backward but this is another story.

In this small book just a few pages are devoted to Kant's reception of his manuscrispts. What we have instead is a concise, well written with brevity, wit and humor recounting of the memorable events of his extraordinary life. The form of the narrative is similar to that of a bildungsroman. He tells how he left the confines of his backward, isolated and ridden with prejudices small hometown in Polish Lithouania in search of knowledge.

Maimon was a man of exceptional intelligence and that was obvious not only to himself but also to his countrymen whose high esteem he commanded from a young age due to his excelence in the talmoudic studies. Yet he grew sceptical towards the latter and set out to seek rational and scientific enlightenment in Germany. In this endeavour he even managed because of his destitution to follow a beggar for six whole months, "two such heterogeneous persons were nowhere to be met in the world, I was an educated rabbi, he was an idiot".

His story from successes to misfortunes hovers from the hillarious to the tragic and reveals a personality of a genius whose naivety in social relationships and incistence never to pursue anything but knowledge kept him in almost constant destitution.

It is enjoyable reading and also contains much information about the jewish intellectual world in 18th century Europe.

An innocent abroad
By Charles Meyers
If Gimple the Fool had an IQ of 180, he would be like the subject of this autobiography--an oddball, out-of-it Polish-Lithuanian Jew, taken advantage of by many, including his wife. This guy can do the math and is an amazing scholar, but he is a perennial loser. Actually, the Maimon of the Autobiography reminds me more of an ancillary Saul Bellow character than one by I. B. Singer, wonderfully gifted, but disorganized and self-defeating, a brilliant but unworldly schlemiel. Maimon emigrates from medieval shtetl to enlightenment Berlin (last quarter of the 18th century), pursuing philosophy and truth, teaching himself as he goes, trying (unsuccessfully) to earn a living with his pen. He writes well and logically, but is a social naif. He follows his arguments where they take him, impressing strangers, affronting friends, collecting enemies. He is also a slob and a schnorrer. His story is funny and poignant, both intentionally and unintentionally, as self-referential stories told by very smart people who lack a practical bent can be.

a guide to the not-so-good old days
By Michael Lewyn
This book is the autobiography of an 18th-century Polish Jew who moved from rural Poland to Berlin, taught himself philosophy and met all manner of important people, but was limited by his lack of people skills. The most interesting chapters are the first few, where he describes the poverty and misery of rural life. Maimon himself was married off by his parents at age 11, and had no formal secular education. (He implies that the only Jewish education he had was the Talmud; it seems hard to believe that he was not exposed to the Bible first, but he may be skipping over his early years). Also interesting are his descriptions of the early Hasidim; he makes it clear that the Hasidim followed in the steps of earlier mystics and ascetics, and suggested that the Hasidim met with hostility from leading rabbis because their anti-ascetism sometimes led to rude, out-of-control behavior. (I would imagine that some Hasidim would take offense to his description- but then again, Hasidism has had 200 years to improve their system, as the best leaders created dynasties and the charlatans pretending to be rebbes faded into oblivion). He also describes the character of Moses Mendelssohn, who comes across as a truly admirable man.

From Handprints to Hypotheses: Using the Project Approach with Toddlers and Twos, by Todd Wanerman

Creativity, initiative, and inquiry are important in all children's early education, including toddlers and two-year-olds. This book focuses on using the project approach—a teaching strategy that enables educators and caregivers to guide children through in-depth studies of real world topics—to scaffold very young children's early learning. It provides information on creating sensory-based experiences—developmentally appropriate for toddlers and twos—that bring new perspectives and activities into the classroom.

Todd Wanerman has been teaching toddlers and twos for twenty years. He is the coauthor of Including One, Including All.

Review

“This book is a must for teachers of very young children. Todd Wanerman easily weaves his theoretical understanding through the practical suggestions he offers to enrich young children’s experience of art. These pages are full of insightful ideas for sensory exploration and art-making. Wanerman’s twenty years of working with toddlers shows through his beautifully organized chapters. His approach makes the process of working with children’s journeys from chaos to cohesion feel very doable. Yet he also embraces the complexity of thoughtful interaction between teacher and child. He demonstrates how to amplify the ideas that children bring to their work and play. Wanerman invites teachers to develop young children’s sense of belonging to a community of learners where art is among the most satisfying and worthwhile of life experiences.”

An approchable and inspiring gem
By M. Cavalca
In his first solo book titled From Handprints to Hypotheses , seasoned early childhood educator Todd Wanerman gifts his readers with his 25+ years of classroom experience, as well as his reflection on and research into his own work. Wanerman seamlessly weaves theory and practice, with an approachable style that uses "plain English" and simultaneously challenges and inspires the reader to experiment in his/her own classroom. From Handprints to Hypotheses isn't a book just for those ECE professionals who work with toddlers. It's a book that offers lessons, insights and provocations even for preschool teachers. Wanerman opens a new window into the possibilities of toddlerhood and clearly supports his theory that even young children are capable of the focus and attention needed for long-term project work. He certainly illustrates the point that a move from "chaos to cohesion" is absolutely possible in a toddler classroom! From Handprints to Hypotheses is a book that a teaching team or an entire ECE center staff could use as a launching pad from their own professional development and inquiry into the power of art as a vehicle for communication, self-expression and research. No doubt would also make a nice complement to the textbook selection for any ECE curriculum course. It's definitely going to be put to good use in my practice!

Great book for educators
By Jennifer Birkner
If you are a teacher of toddlers or teenagers, this book will help you decipher the and meaningful work of childhood and the call to creativity. As i read the book i was flooded with memories of artistic experiences I had when i was a child. I wondered when it was I became self concience of my artistic abilities and thought I am not "good at art". Pablo Picasso said, "Every child is born an artist. The Problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." In this book I found some answers to this question. We can all learn something from Wanerman's deep understanding of the young child's drive to experience their world. After reading this book I feel sensory experiences for young children are an important part of their emotional, social and physical development. I have tried some of the projects and teciques described in the book in my classroom of toddlers to much success. The children enjoy the projects, the teachers enjoy them and the parents marvel at what their children are capable of. This is a whole new way to look at doing art with young children and nurturing the artist in every one of us. Maybe my classroom of toddlers will carry the love of being artists with them to adulthood and aply that to all aspects of their lives. This is a wonderful book for teachers who are inspired by the Reggio Emilia teaching Phylosophy. Todd Wanerman has a lovely writing style and the book is fun to read as well as being informative. I just loved this book and recommend it to all teachers!

Invaluable for children and parents alike
By Inder Dhillon
I found this book invaluable in understanding the worlds of exploration, curiosity, and the gaining of self-knowledge that are so critical to toddlers and young children. Most educators agree that one of the central challenges of educating children today is that we are using 20th century techniques (such as objective-based, test-obsessed, standardized models) to educate children for the 21st century. Today's children will compete in an interconnected competitive global village. To succeed in that world, a core trait will be an artistic mindset. Lucky for us, all children are born with that mindset; the sad part is that our current methods of education teach that out of children. Todd Wanerman's book goes a long way in showing that art-based projects can not only engage the children's interest, and help them embrace learning and a sense of self, but also set them off on a lifelong journey of self-assuredness, confidence, and developing the artistic mindset that will be so crucial in the 21st century. The book is filled with ideas for projects, with lists of materials that will be needed, and illustrated with bright color photographs. It will be invaluable not only to teachers but to parents; you can easily do these projects at home with your children. So get some paper, some paint, and start rolling. While you're at it, get messy yourself; it is never too late to have a happy childhood. It will put you back in touch with your long-forgotten inner child and may even make you a more competitive worker in the 21st century.

When Scott’s gay best friend commits suicide, Scott, who knows the boy was bullied to death, decides to form a gay-straight alliance “to make sure this didn’t happen to anybody else at school.” In the meantime, Carmen, who is an out and proud lesbian, receives a death threat and decides, in turn, that she will start a GSA. In short order, the two form an alliance working together toward their goal. But it won’t be easy. Carmen continues to receive threats, and Scott, who is straight, finds his reputation on the line. Worst of all, theirs is a conservative school and community. Will the two be able to overcome bigotry? Told from their first-person, alternating points of view, The Alliance is a smoothly written, accessible story of two brave and sympathetic teens who struggle to overcome odds. This volume in the Surviving Southside series is an excellent title for reluctant readers and is sure to spark discussion in GSA groups and in the classroom. Grades 7-12. --Michael Cart

This is an extremely powerful and poignant tale of an unusual alliance between students ...
By Deb
Pain rippled through Scott Joshua King as he attended Jamie Ballard's memorial. It was heartbreaking to see Jamie's mother sit limply, "sobbing without making a sound." They had been best friends since they began school and the hypocrites who had once given him all those "nasty looks" were smiling and relaying stories. Yeah, "but the one thing nobody in the room mentioned: Jamie was also gay." Scott wondered if he'd been giving off signs, but it was too late to bring him back. If he had anything to do it, it was never, ever going to happen to anyone at Southside High again. Had he missed something? Would Jamie still be alive if he'd recognized them in time?

Carmen was her own person, out and proud. She was a fashionista of her own making and her Ma exclaimed, "People are going to think we don't buy you real clothes." Baggy pants, combat books, a sleeveless shirt, topped off by henna tattoos and a lip ring spelled Carmen. She'd broken up with Sara, her "first serious girlfriend," but didn't tell her parents. She had a few other things on her mind and one of them was Jamie. Carmen, when she glanced at her Papa's iPad saw words like "death threats" and "intimidation." Seriously, was she safe? Carmen would really begin to wonder when she found Jamie's obit in her locker. Someone had scrawled across it, "One down ... you're next." Was she going to let them get to her too?

Scott wanted to form a GSA, Gay-Straight Alliance at Southside, but getting those thirty signatures would be problematic. He'd get criticized by fellow students and even from unexpected quarters. "Oooh, look boys. Mary's upset." Scott was a good student, and would have no trouble getting support from teachers. Carmen too, dreamed about how she could empower herself and others with a GSA. Mr. Wilson as good as dissed her when she broached the subject. Scott didn't know Carmen, but when he checked Jamie's twitter stream he saw VictorEE and checked out his tweets. There was an attack and this time it was aimed at Carmen. Would he be able to save her? Would a GSA at Southside High stop this hating?

This is an extremely powerful and poignant tale of an unusual alliance between students. The tale alternates between both Scott's and Carmen's viewpoints, two very different viewpoints yet one with a singular purpose ... to create a GSA at Southside. Young people are very aware of bullying, many having experienced it themselves. The GLBTQ population, one oftentimes more heavily targeted by haters, needs the support that a Gay-Straight Alliance can provide. Conversely, straight students need a context in which they can openly support fellow students. The unexpected twist at the end will provided a stepping stone for classroom discussion. This is a short story, but one that packs an emotional punch. A free downloadable discussion guide can be accessed from the publisher's website.

good high-low title/series
By Kate M.
As an 8th grade teacher with most of my students reading well below grade level, I am always on the hunt for high school stories written at the elementary school level in order to get my reluctant readers to READ. This series wins half the battle with cool cover art. The topics are engaging, the story lines aren't too complicated, and my low readers can feel proud to carry a cool looking book to class.

Great series for struggling HS readers
By Deborah Lee
This series is a great choice for struggling high school readers. My READ180 9th Graders love all of the books. The topics are appropriate and high interest for high school readers. It is similar to the Blucked High series, but at lower Lexiles and they don't need to be read in any particular order. I hope there are additions to this 12-book series soon!
