She is running away from a toxic “love,” from a possible pregnancy, and, finally, to hopefully find her mother and discover the reason behind her disappearance. As she rolls along I-95 on a Greyhound bus, Natalie meets others who recount their own stories of love and loss, gradually preparing her for her mother’s saga of depression and poor choices, which leads her to acceptance of her own plight. This sad but ultimately satisfying journey is well written and interspersed with familiar quotations about love. The simple lesson that Natalie begins to learn from her seatmates and finally grasps from her mother—that she must love herself first, before anyone else can love her back—is a lesson for all readers to absorb and understand. Baskin has created another wonderful story, which hopefully will be followed by many, many more.

Fifteen-year-old Natalie Gordon lives with her dad not too far from New York City. Her mom has been gone for over four years. She walked out on Natalie and didn't even leave a forwarding address or phone number.

It takes a long time for them to adjust, as Natalie cries a lot and her dad drinks. But eventually they do manage to move on with their lives. Natalie relies on her best friend, Sarah, for laughter and support, and her dad learns how to make dinner and be home more often from work. Apart from Sarah, Natalie doesn't tell anyone else about her mom leaving. It's a part of her life that is too private and painful, and she doesn't feel comfortable sharing it with the world.

When Sarah and Natalie start high school, they meet Adam. He is a few years older, and Sarah isn't that impressed with him. But Natalie is. She is intoxicated with the attention he gives her and becomes desperate for any ounce of love he offhandedly throws her way. Every month she prays that she'll get her period, hoping she isn't pregnant, but she always goes back to him, even after breaking up with him a few times.

And then a package arrives. It's a gift from her mom. Natalie barely gives it a second glance, but does notice the return address. Without telling anyone, she buys a bus ticket to Florida and sets out on a painful journey to get some desperately needed answers. Along the way, she meets a handful of people who impact her life in different ways, with advice, directions, a kind smile, a loaned magazine and a sandwich. She also examines her unhealthy relationship with Adam. Natalie's journey, the people she meets, and the impressions and perceptions she gains will change her life forever.

Nora Raleigh Baskin jumpstarts the drama on page one, propelling the reader through until the very end. Baskin cleverly weaves a few glimpses into Natalie's past as she makes her journey, sharing the building blocks that have helped make her who she is, and uses the unique approach of slipping in whispers of the lives of those Natalie encounters along the trip. ALL WE KNOW OF LOVE is written in a heartfelt style that transports the reader deep into the very core of its characters. Baskin has created another wonderful story, which hopefully will be followed by many, many more.

Natalie Gordon is on a mission. Her mother walked out in mid-sentence four years ago, never to be seen again, and now Natalie is on a journey to find her.

She wants to know everything: why she is the way that she is, what her mother was saying about love just before she walked out the door, and, most importantly, why her mother left.

While on a twenty-four hour bus ride to Florida, she may just find some of the answers in the people she meets along the way, people just like her, people caught up in the ideas of wanting, of longing, and of what love truly means.

ALL WE KNOW OF LOVE is a poignant study of the depths and shades of love, and what love means to each different person. The format of the book works well to convey this sense of the universal nature of love by placing its narrator at the center of many unfolding stories. Natalie is a pensive narrator whose musings move readers to consider their own inferiorities, and as her life touches those of characters around her, we are treated to brief glimpses into others' life experiences.

In ALL WE KNOW OF LOVE, Nora Raleigh Baskin gives the reader a study in the nuances of love, and leaves her audience with a greater perspective and appreciation for the commonalities within us all.

I read All We Know of Love by Nora Raleigh Baskin was an excellent book. I would rate this book a 5/5. The main character's name is Natalie. She is 16 years old and is a very inspiring character. Natalie's mother walked out on her dad and her when we was 12 years old and she loses complete contact with her mother. Four years after her mother leaves her, she gets a package in the mail. She can tell by the mailing address that it is from her mother and she also notices it shows an address; an address in which her mother is probably located. When she opens it, she discovers that it is a box of earrings. Why would her mother send her these out of the blue? Does she want contact with Natalie again? Why would she? Natalie doesn't understand the feeling of love. She wants to discovers what it truly means and throughout the book, you get to feel the understanding as a reader. Should Natalie go off to seek her mother? Or should she leave her out of her life?

This will be your new favorite book!

This is the first book I've ever reviewed and I'm writing because this THE POWER OF STARTING SOMETHING STUPID IS REFRESHING! I read Seth Godin, Dan Pink, Malcolm Gladwell, Covey, Ferriss, and the classic business books and I realize I subconsciously expect a similar feel from each of them. This book took takes it to a new level. The author just nailed it. It's timely and so easily implementable, I can't imagine reading this book and not having breakthroughs.
Here's what I think it is:
1. At the end of the day, business books show you a list of things you need to be doing better. Thats important but this one is so light and freeing based on what I'm already doing. It taps in to the power of following your heart, taking action, really taking action. Read this and all of the sudden you find yourself doing the things you've dreamed of doing for a long time. Richie is incredibly persuasive in reframing what we all know, which is making mistakes and doing "Stupid" things is awesome. He just strips the heaviness out of it. It really feels like it's just an invitation to the party and you've already earned your way in.

It is truly INCREDIBLE to me that this is Richie Norton's first physical published book. He's young and the testimonials by the big guns are enough a reason to buy this book. So thats my review. I highly recommend buying this book and jumping in it immediately!

fills a niche

As an 8th grade teacher with most of my students reading well below grade level, I am always on the hunt for high school stories written at the elementary school level in order to get my reluctant readers to READ. This series wins half the battle with cool cover art. The topics are engaging, the story lines aren't too complicated, and my low readers can feel proud to carry a cool looking book to class.

Great series for struggling HS readers

This series is a great choice for struggling high school readers. My READ180 9th Graders love all of the books. The topics are appropriate and high interest for high school readers. It is similar to the Blucked High series, but at lower Lexiles and they don't need to be read in any particular order. I hope there are additions to this 12-book series soon!

a wonderful example of Bombeck's great brand of humor.....

This book diverges from Bombeck's usual subject matter--family--to take on other compelling topics, like diet and the self image of American women. One of the greatest stand-out examples, for me, of her warm humorous take on crash diets and extreme weight loss measures, is when she talks about a case study done with laboratory rats. As part of the experiment, the rats modelled different kinds of clothing. For example, if a rat wore vertical stripes, he was more likely to look longer and leaner than his counterparts. Also, if a rat was having a dialogue with another rat, he stood on the curb, or the stairs, so he was always on a higher platform from his friend. This gave the illusion that he was taller and skinnier. I remember the first time I read this. I was rolling with laughter.

God bless Erma Bombeck. We are so lucky that her comedic gift lives on in her wonderful books. These books are best described as "slice of life" vignettes of the day-to-day experiences of American identity, through the eyes of one of the most influential people in the world---a mother.

Excuse any typos....I'm still laughing after 10 years

Yes, it's been ten years since I read it (I have the original version with the white cover and Erma mowing the lawn). I still laugh at the thought of some parts of it. Erma, I love you, I miss you, and I wish you could send us columns from heaven. About the book: you must read it and you will find something to relate to in it. Even though it has a 1970's tone (pre-microwaves and cell phones) you can still relate to it and laugh with it. Get it, and any other Bombeck Book you can snatch.

I bought this book about ten years ago and it is nearly worn out. I had never heard of Irma Bombeck back when I purchased this book and I thought the American humour might not suit me (I'm an Aussie). I was soon to fall in love with Irma's wit and observations. It is a funny and painfully honest look at life in suburbia. If this book doesn't get you smiling....see your doctor!

About the Author

Robert Wiebe

Robert Wiebe was born in 1961. He has more than 30 years experience designing, implementing, and testing software. He wrote his first App in 1979, as a high school student, using 6502 assembler code on an Ohio Scientific C2-4P computer with 8k RAM. More recently, he has focused on developing games and utilities for Mac OS X.

His interests include a vintage computer collection which includes many pre-IBM PC era microcomputers; Apple Macintosh computers starting with the SE/30 running Mac OS 7 through to the Macbook Pro running Mac OS X that he uses today.

He has developed many popular Mac OS X Apps including ShredIt X, NetShred X, Music Man, iVCD, and many more.

He has experience developing software in a number of industries, including mining, finance, and communications. He has worked for a number of employers including Motorola as a Senior Systems Architect developing two-way wireless data systems and Infowave Software as the Software Development Manager for their Imaging Division. After working for other people's companies, he founded his own companies, Mireth Technology and Burningthumb Software, which are his primary interests today.

He is also the author of Unity iOS Essential book (ISBN 978-1-849691-82-6).

Great book and well worth the money

I'm not sure if the same thing is true for the print version of this book but when I went to my PacktPub.com account to download this book to put on my iPad, I found that they had the examples bundled up in a .zip file that I could download, why can't more books do this?! I often find that you end up copying out of the book and it either doesn't work or that you have not properly digested how it works. The advantage of having these demos ready to download is that you can straight away get working code which you can tear apart, change, modify and really get your hands on. I often find this the best learning approach, but it is not for everyone. The book does not cater either way (in a good way) if you want to learn step-by-step then you can, the book guides you though exactly how to do things and more importantly it explains to you what you are writing, why you need it and what it does for the application.

Now I was testing out the ePub format on my iPad and did find a few formatting errors with the way the text and tables flow from page to page but it did not effect how the book read at all.

I am fairly unfamiliar with the Xcode interface and I only know the basic locations of the popular buttons, I think the interface can be a little bit daunting to some. This book starts right at the beginning and does not expect you to know anything about the interface beforehand, it walks you through all of the things that you need to know and some of the others you will pickup along the way.

One thing I did find really useful about the book is the fact that it is laid out in almost three simple steps for each part, it first walks through a little bit about what you are about to do and what it will do for the application, it then has a `Time for action' step which guides you through the actual process, and then the part that I like the most is the `What just happened?' part. That last part is something that I have found lacking in some of the other books I have read (not all though) is that they don't take the time to step back and pause for a second and explain exactly what you just did.

OK for beginners, but beware of bugs in text

OK for beginners, but be aware of a couple of issues:

Apple has changed a few things in Xcode 5.0 (latest version for Mavericks), which are not represented correctly in the book. One tricky item in particular is how outlets are assigned in IB for items in the view. The method in the book is no longer supported, so you will have to do some googling.

Also, there are a lot of typo's, and missing lines of code in the book examples. If you want to compile and run the code as listed, you will have to add a few things. Not good for a beginner.

I will admit, I have not downloaded the .zip file that is supposed to be available to see if that has the correct source code. So far I am on chapter 5 and have been able to figure out how to fix all the issues, as they are minor if you have some experience with XCode. If you are a true beginner, you may struggle with this.

Other than those issues, I like the layout of actually creating working applications for each chapter, rather than theoretical ideas.

not just GUI design

Ahem, I do have to differ slightly with the Preface, which asserts that Apple's 'market share is growing faster than the industry and has been for years'. I've been following Apple since 82, and I well remember when Microsoft relegated them to almost irrelevancy on the desktop and where extinction loomed as a real possibility in the late 90s. But yes Apple did come back spectacularly and Mac OS X is a very solid operating system. To this ends, programming for OS X can be lucrative.

The author also acknowledges that finding bugs is a real part of the development process. Thus the second chapter discusses the debugger that comes with Xcode. We are walked thru deliberate coding errors, that result in executable code, but which when run give wrong answers. Like dividing by zero. You need to learn how to use breakpoints, to step thru problematic code. Something common to every debugger in every language. So if you have never used any debugger before, the lessons in this book can indeed be transferable to other computing environments.

Another useful section of the book explains iCloud, which is Apple's marketing term for you being able to store data on their servers. The payoff is the ability to have several devices on the Internet access and change a common data area. This is something different from most any application environment of say 10 years ago. Then, it was incumbent on you to provide that central storage on the Internet, via your own data center. So pay attention here. This is cutting edge.

Later chapters then delve into GUI issues. Perhaps some readers were really looking for these topics. But the book tries to strike a balance between these and the earlier abilities. You should become facile across all these, to be an experienced developer.

This is also an AWESOME parenting book! I bought this book and the companion activities book. I am pursuing a career in speech-language pathology and I have a two-year-old son and am always looking for ways to be a better caregiver and mother. The most valuable thing this book has to offer is how the environmental, biological, physiological and emotional aspects of child development come together to form a child as she grows. It brings a complete whole-child view to the table and helps me as a parent and future caregiver look at children with an enhanced lens of wonder and amazement at the development of all children. This book brought both a new pattern of colors to add to my kaleidoscope of childhood development and a new way of making sense of everything all at the same time. It is SO important in this modern world of hustle-and-bustle to take the time to listen to what children are trying to tell us and this book shows you how........AND WHY. The activities book, of course, is an added bonus for which I will leave a separate review, but I strongly suggest reading (or at least skimming) this book first. It will give you context for what you are doing with children and help you learn why certain children will react differently to the same activity. It will help you appreciate those reactions and learn to help children become unique in their own ways because of those little clues and hints to their temperaments and personalities that most people will miss. As a secondary benefit for parents, I am able to better clue in to the details in my daycare about which I can comfortably ask questions. For those parents who have not yet found a daycare provider.......READ THIS BOOK! It will help you come up with a checklist of the things that are most important to you when looking for someone to care for and love your child as much as you do!

Hank Pym's a Big Deal for Being Such a Small Dude

If you have never taken the chance to get to know Hank Pym (ANT-MAN), then take the time to do it, and do it though THIS BOOK. Unlike so many Marvel trades/titles/series available right now, Ant-Man is something you can pick up and read without ANY prior knowledge. It's an excellent way to get your feet wet, and gives some focus to a desperately under-appreciated character.
The story is easy to follow and concise, and follows in some ways more of the older style of comic books rather than some of the newer writing/plot forwarding devices. The art is clear and bold and exciting without being blocky, and the character designs are aesthetically satisfying (not to say they're all PRETTY--they're all solid and suitable).

I may be biased because I LOVE Dr. Pym, but--I thought this was a great book, and a great way to introduce a character that gets made fun of and discounted WAY too often.

Read it--FOR SCIENCE!

The 'New 52 Ant-Man': impractical artistic changes in story, disappointing changes to the Ant-Man mythos - not worth reading

My all-time favorite superhero is Hank Pym, and his many, many alternate identities.

In all of the years the Marvel universe has existed, it has never had a single reboot eradicate the decades of layers of continuity incorporated in every in-universe story.

As a longtime fan of Hank Pym who's well-versed in the character's history, I cannot read through this book and think this pretty-boy twenty something is the mature character who's one of the smartest people on Earth. For comic book fans that are familiar with the other Big 2 publisher's recent New 52 reboot, "Ant-Man: Season One" takes Marvel's long-time size-changer expert Hank Pym and changes almost everything about him, to the point where it reads just like one of the many unsuccessful New 52 titles.

The first step the book does in completely changing his character is to de-age him to an irrational, impulsive young widow. Fueled by daddy issues and his token black, basketball-jersey wearing best friend sidekick Bill Foster (also conveniently de-aged to ensure that Hank isn't some loner freak), Hank decides to take on the Egghead corporation he and his friend work for with little foundation or explanation behind the main villain's - Elias Starr's - ulterior motives.

There's a great Hannibal Lecter-esque shot of the MAIN PROTAGONIST past the midpoint of the story that sums up how inaccurate the character portrayals and dynamics of everyone in the story are. The heavily-creator-influenced subplot with Hank and his father was as weak as Hank Pym's angst and reaction over his wife's recent death (of which in one of the early panels, the artist drew Hank smiling when explaining his grief). Every character is one-dimensional and easily forgettable, to the point where I almost missed the moment at the end of the book where (spoilers), his dad dies. Add one more notch on the bedpost of people fridged during this supposed origin story.

The change that irks me the MOST about this book is that it changes Hank Pym's motivations for becoming a superhero by coating it in vengeance and death. Hank Pym is one of my favorite superheroes BECAUSE he doesn't do it because his parents or uncle were murdered, or because he's a god above everyone else, or because he was already rich and had a lot of free time, or because it was his duty to be one. He was just a simple scientist who made one of the biggest breakthroughs in science by discovering a particle that would completely rewrite and demolish the laws of physics as we know it, and then he realized he could use them to become a superhero. No angst. No regret. No ego.

The art and coloring in the book were decent, and I have no problems with them. However, this book isn't "Ant-Man: Season One". It's more like an alternate version of Hank Pym, and for longtime Marvel fans who are familiar with the Ultimate version of Pym, I wouldn't have minded seeing this "Ultimate Spider-Man-esque" Pym instead in the 1610-verse.

Ultimately, this book does a disservice to people that are actually familiar with the character, and is a horrible introduction for anyone unfamiliar with Henry Pym. I wouldn't want to read this more than once, or ever again after finishing up writing this review.

If you're interested in learning about Hank Pym, skip this book and read something else, like Slott's run on Mighty Avengers, the nicely collected trade paperback "The Many Faces of Henry Pym", or the original Ant-Man stories collected in Marvel Masterworks. Please don't read this.

A Modern Retelling of Pym's Origins

Ant-Man Season One has a mix of good and bad on it as it tells a new version of Ant Man (Hank Pym's) origin story. On one hand, both writing and art are fundamentally good. Tom DeFalco is a legendary comic book writer and his work on this book is up to his usual standards. Horacio Domingues is a talented artist that brings a more European style to the book that looks great.

The story itself manages to be a modern day update of the Ant Man origin story with terrorists replacing the Communists as the culprits behind the murder of the first Mrs. Hank Pym. That event is given more weight and it feels less like the throw away death that the writers created as an excuse for Pym to become a crimefighter. The story imagines Pym as having a history of mental illness from the beginning which explains much of his checkered history as a superhero. There's some great action and Domingues' art really makes the story come alive.

The negative though is that the story is interesting and an okay read, but at the end of the day, it's nothing special. Year One or Season One stories call to mind the idea of an epic story of beginnings and origins and the story feels too small for this purpose. I've read two of the DC Year One books (which if we're honest Marvel was trying to follow) and both imagined an epic series of adventures and first meetings, as well as big over-arching thought. Here we have Hank Pym developing something and deciding to take on an evil bald corporate honcho and that's essentially your story. Again, this isn't bad or annoying. It's pleasing to read, but it's not anything more than average.
