Aaron delivers the stories that Wolverine fans have been wanting for years.
By Sean Curley
In comics, it's hard to get a new character off the ground consistently; and by "new", people generally mean anyone who was created later than 1969. Wolverine, at a sprightly 45 years old, is the youngest of the comics' true megastar characters; indeed, over the last few decades he has reached the point where only Spider-Man rivals him in popularity. He's had his own title for over 20 years, and multiple titles and team memberships for much of the same. By 2009, it's difficult to say anything new about Wolverine, as his 100+ years of life have been crowded with an enormous number of adventures ("Wolverine: Origins" has been bogged down for years in its giant Grand Unified Conspiracy Theory). Difficult, but Jason Aaron, a rising star thanks to his Vertigo crime drama "Scalped", knows the way. His "Get Mystique" storyline in the main Wolverine title showed a proper back-to-basics approach to the character, and now given his own ongoing (meant as a movie tie-in), he continues that here. This trade paperback collects issues 1-5 of the ongoing, as well as Aaron's story from "Wolverine" #73-74. Some spoilers follow.

The main story opens with Wolverine being informed via his old comrade Maverick that the technology of the Weapon X program, including the ability to mix adamantium, has fallen into the hands of Blackguard, a private security corporation owned by Roxxon (for decades Marvel's default Evil Corporation). The result is a squad of soldiers with healing factors, enhanced senses, energy claws, and absolutely no morals, ruthlessly eliminating opponents of Roxxon at the behest of their corporate masters; and a lot of other buyers would very much like to get their hands on this technology. Wolverine can't abide that, and heads out to do some killing in the name. Meanwhile, a reporter Wolverine earlier encountered, Melita Garner, is also investigating the Blackguard case. This is, as stated earlier, a fairly basic Wolverine story, told exceptionally well. After years trapped in Daniel Way's conspiracy drivel, which has only conspired to weigh him down with unwieldy and implausible backstory, Aaron's craftsmanship is just what he needs. He takes Wolverine seriously (the monologue as he resolves the situation with one of Blackguard's hitmen, for example, is haunting), but with the right amount of black humour about him (see his method of stopping a mugging). Melita, Logan's new potential love interest (oh dear, those never end well for him), is a nicely-done take on the by-now familiar Lois Lane intrepid reporter. Ron Garney, who worked with Aaron on "Get Mystique", returns as well, delivering solid art.

The second story is an interesting one. It starts off as a cute semi-parody of Wolverine's extensive appearances throughout the Marvel universe (I'd wager he hasn't appeared in less than a dozen comics a month for quite a while now) by depicting a typical week in Logan's life in little panels. Each panel, superbly rendered by Andy Kubert, offers us a little window into a standard Wolverine adventure, as he works with the X-Men, X-Force, and the New Avengers, teams up with Spider-Man, Deadpool, and others, and, whenever he can, finds a bit of time to relax. It's very low-key funny. The second part turns toward a more serious tone as Spider-Man attempts to understand why he operates on such a frenetic schedule, and Aaron offers a bit of characterization as meta-explanation. Aaron understands how write a man burdened by his own past.

Recommended (it's a pleasure to see one of the great Marvel characters finally get some real stories again).

For Wolverine Fans
By D. Ness
It doesn't look like this new series will be as relevant to the marvel universe as Wolverine Origins is. It actually reminded me of the kind of stories that were told in Wolverine's solo series back in the 80's. Technically this book takes place after X-Men Manifest Destiny and before X-Men Utopia, and during Dark Reign. If you're a Wolverine fan this is definitely worth getting as the story is classic Wolverine and we get the return of Maverick. If you're just a fan of the main X-Men or Avengers storylines, this book is pretty much a stand alone and you won't be missing much by skipping it.

Above Standard
By David Keith
Been a while since I read a solo Wolverine title and this is a good one to jump on board with. Very entertaining story telling from Aaron and pitch perfect artwork from the uber professional workhorse Ron Garney (who I think is a bit under appreciated). Also includes a needed backup story with art from one of the Kubert boys which addresses the exhausting pace and multiple team memberships of Wolverine these days. The story's got a couple of *gasp* moments and a couple of tugging on the heartstrings as well. Solid work and Recommended for new and old Wolverine fans. Tho, it's a bit bloody for younger readers.

X-Necrosha Reading Order
By D. Ness
Well once again we have a great X-Men crossover event reprinted and collected out of sequence. They even tried to give us a chronology map at the start of the book that really doesn't help. So here I am again to give you a suggested read order to maximize the thrill of this story. There is some overlapping because I tried to keep the individual issues intact. For the stories contained in this book read:

NEW X-MEN #32

Another Solid X-Event
By Amazon Customer
While not as incredibly well done as Messiah Complex, X-Necrosha does make for a far more entertaining tale than either Messiah War or Utopia. The story itself isn't so much a crossover though as it is a common theme running through various titles, which can very easily be divided into three distinct stories each with their own merits.

The first and bulkiest of the tales is the one running through X-Force. It is written by Chris Yost and Craig Kyle with art by Clayton Crain and is the real basis behind the book itself. Unfortunately this story is probably the weakest. It starts great with the revival of some great X-Villains and the invasion of Utopia which is perfectly illustrated by Crain's dark murky style, but the event quickly loses steam. Despite a few early surprises after the initial invasion there isn't much left to the story and the final battle just seems to lose feeling. Even Crain's artwork seems less inspired, probably due to timing constraints as the further into the book the more blurry the images become. Still it is a worthy piece, and if you've been reading X-Force for the last year and a half it's a must since the story has been building sense the series launched.

The next story comes from New Mutants with writer Zeb Wells and primarily artist Diogenes Neves. The story revolves around how the New Mutants face the invasion of Utopia having to deal with both the revival of the Hellions and their former teammate Doug Ramsey. Wells does a great job of reviving Doug not only literally but metaphorically as well bringing depth to the character and his abilities he had been lacking since his inception. The art isn't quite up to the level of the script on this one, but it is well done, you probably won't come away dying for more Neves nor will you come away disappointed and I suspect we'll be seeing improvement in the artist as his career develops.

Last but certainly not least is Mike Carey and Clay Mann's X-Men Legacy story. This one is the most removed of all the material dealing with a villain who "hitched" a ride back to life with the revived Destiny. As Proteus is not really under the control of Selene this piece really has quite a different feel to it. Carey's scripting as always is excellent though it's really no surprise that the characters who get the most spotlight are Rogue and Magneto, the real surprise on this one is Mann's artwork. The artist's work is very reminiscent of Oliver Copiel and equally impressive, easily the best in the book, and it's what really makes this story the standout of the bunch.

The book itself also has a decent helping of extras, two important issues included are back issues from X-Force and New X-Men showing some of the roots to the story that stretched back years, but in an odd design choice the pieces are actually after the story they should precede. Also included is The Gathering (another prequel piece), a brief Deadpool story from the X-Force Annual, and another Rogue centric issue of X-Men Legacy. None of these issues are essential to the reading but they each, particularly the later two, make great reads and are much appreciated extras as I'm sure even without them the price tag would have remained the same.

All in all X-Necrosha is a great concept and makes for a quite enjoyable read and certainly brings something different to the world of X-Men.

Great
By storm
I don't know what is going on with these bad rates. This book is great, though it isn't for kids. The first thing I noticed (it seems I am the only one) is the size of this hardcover book. It is the much better than regular (pages are wider and it is great experience). I highly recommend buying hardcover edition.

On to the story, which is quite good, it starts with X-force stories Gathering, 11 and 21-25. The art of Clayton Crain is magnificent (though it is not meant to be for kids). A lot of old characters and a new one. 5 out of 5

This is followed by New mutants stories 6-8. Although I am already familiar with the art of Diogenes Neves (X-men: Worlds apart/highly recommended, great art and Storm) in this book something is wrong, his art is not so vivid as before. The story is ok. 4 out of 5

Next to X-men legacy 231-234 which are illustrated by Clay Mann (not the best artwork but very good, somewhere between Oliver Coipel and Ben Oliver). The story is about Prometheus's return. 5 out of 5.
And some backup stories written and illustrated by different authors and illustrators.

I have read reviews before buying this book, someone noticed that stories are not sorted chronologically (they are sorted as stated), but I really didn't have any problem with this, on the contrary, I think it is better this way (the art and characters are consistent).

From Booklist
In this latest installment in Bruel’s successful series, Kitty’s behavior is so bad that her owner has decided obedience school is necessary. Accompanied by Puppy, who needs to learn to control his drool, Kitty spends the day with a delightful teacher who knows when to affirm and when to teach; a bulldog named Petunia, who is trying to overcome her hatred of felines; and a pet bunny who believes he is Dr. Lagomorph, out to conquer the world. With the usual zany illustrations and hilarious asides, this title may just be the best so far. Grades 2-4. --Melissa Moore

Wonderful!
By Michelle Law
School Daze is the next installment in the Bad Kitty series. My children love it! They loved everything about the story, the bus ride, in the classroom, and how Bad Kitty sees herself. It made my girls giggle with delight! It brings back characters from other books and brings Bad Kitty to life once again. This will be a book that will be read over and over, just like the rest of the series. It is a treasure for my girls.

My New Favorite Bad Kitty!
By This Kid Reviews Books
Bad Kitty and Puppy have crossed the line! With Kitty's grumpiness and Puppy's drooling problem, (and their constant fighting) it's no surprise that they are sent to Diabla Von Gloom's School for Wayward Pets. There, the dueling duo meet Miss Dee, a very kind teacher, Petunia, a very tough bull-dog who HATES!!! cats, and DR. LAGOMORPH, a diabolical mutant supervillian bunny whose arch-enemies are Captain Fantasticat and Power Mouse (A.K.A. Weird Kitty and the little mouse). Kitty and Puppy go through events at school, like Arts & Crafts and Story time. Puppy seems to be trying his best but Kitty is not cooperating (plus she is really scared Petunia will figure out she's really a cat and not a cow ;) ). Miss Dee likes Kitty and tries to help her be good, but Kitty is not sure she wants to be friends with the other pets in obedience school.

First I have to say I am a HUGE fan of Mr. Bruel's books. I have met Mr. Bruel a couple of times at book signings I went to and he is a very nice person and is always very kind and takes time to talk to me. My favorite Bad Kitty adventure so far is "Bad Kitty Vs. Uncle Murray" and I have to say - this one is my new favorite! I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I love the humor! Mr Bruel seemed to have packed even more humor into this Bad Kitty adventure. I love the pictures and Uncle Murray's fun facts (Uncle Murray is the school bus driver)! I love the awesome characters of Dr. Lagomorph and Petunia, they are hysterical! I think Dr. Lagomorph is the best character in the book (besides Bad Kitty and Puppy), and probably the funniest! Like all the other Bad Kitty books, this one has a nice message in it. Bad Kitty really ends up helping all the other pets in school and is kind to them. I love how Mr. Bruel always has a good message in his books.
**Note I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author
Frank and Victoria Logue hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 1988. They have returned again and again to hike its many sections on day and overnight hikes. Frank served on the Appalachian Trail Conference Board of Managers. The Logues live in Georgia where Frank works as an Episcopal priest while Victoria writes. They both enjoy sharing their love of nature with their daughter, Griffin.

In fact, this Fincastle, Virginia resident has explored over 16,000 miles of wilderness throughout North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. He is a board member for the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club, which helps maintain a section of the trail in that area. Hiking for the fun of it
By Alison Sweeney
It was incredible to have somewhere to look that didn't give me 45 day journey's. I found the best trails and the steepest trails right at my fingertips. Because of this book, my husband and I decided to spend our week long vacation hiking the trail instead of day trips in NY, NJ and PA!

Get in your car and go!
By William Ames
If you like to hike, but don't like to spend too long in the mountains, this book is for you. Very well thought out and rich in detail, I've found the suggested hikes to be quite accurate in their descriptions, times, etc. One of the hardest things about day hikes is knowing how long it will take, and how you will get started and finished. the authors of this book went to great lenghts to make sure that they give you exactly the kind of information you need. I've hiked about 10 of the trails mentioned in this book, and I loved every mile of them--i even made it back in time for dinner :-)

Don't believe all you read
By Peter A. Ginsburg
Well, paraphrasing Ronald Reagan, here I go again. Take heart fans of Field Guide to the Birds of Colombia, your book is not the only one for which I've written a less than glowing review. Let me say that this review is from the perspective of a somewhat serious birder. For the positive points, the text is generally quite good especially in highlighting habits of each species covered and the range maps are readable (but, as pointed out by another reviewer, strangely cut off at political borders especially in the cases of New Guinea and Borneo) and where the range is a small island it is noted below the map. The complete checklist at the end of the book is a nice feature which lists all species within the book's coverage and where the species may be encountered along with their endemic and threatened status. Unfortunately the negatives are glaring. Coverage of species and endemic species in particular share top billing. For example, my immediate concern is for Java where for around 58 total endemics listed by the book 21 are not depicted. Glancing at the list of species to be seen in New Guinea it appears that coverage is even worse, e.g. of the 38 species listed on page 525 for Papua, only 15 are depicted and on the next page none of the 6 pitohuis is depicted. For those contemplating using this as a field guide for New Guinea--fuggedaboutit!! As opposed to another reviewer's opinion that coverage of all the island endemics is excellent, my opinion is that it is quite poor. For example, looking at the first page of the Complete Checklist (pg. 501) of the 14 endemics listed 10 are NOT depicted. If one were to use this book alone, the observer using it might have no idea that there may be other species roughly resembling whatever might be shown in the photo and there would be no mention of it in the main text. This is particularly disturbing in that it's not necessarily vagrants or rarities that are omitted. The photos of the species shown vary in quality from excellent to well below any standard that might be expected for field guide purposes. What is wrong with the photos? Many are very grainy, are in deep shadow, are back lit, and in many cases fail to show the field marks necessary in the identification of the species. Sadly there are much better photos of some the species depicted and photos of those not depicted available. Perhaps if one is a very casual birder who wants a vague idea of what species is being observed then this book may be of value. As a serious birder one is stuck with getting the guides to the individual areas, a couple of which are extremely expensive and difficult to come by now (Birds of Wallacea, Birds of New Guinea). I will NOT be taking this book with me on my next trip to Indonesia.

Best Guide for Indonesia
By J. Hargrove
Let me begin by saying that I am not a fan of photographic field guides, as opposed to those with hand painted plates. It is simply not possible to select a photograph of every bird that shows the important field marks. That said, I find this an excellent field guide overall. The photographs are, with very few exceptions, excellent, and in some cases outstanding. One of the problems with this kind of guide is finding a suitable photograph for each bird, and the author has done a good job of assembling this collection. I did note that the photo of Nicobar Pigeon, a bird that every Asian birder wants but few have ticked, is represented by a captive photo. Also, the pelagic species seem under-represented to me. If you are flying to Sulewesi, this probably doesn't matter, but if you plan to cruise the islands, as I was, then you have to consider whether to pack an additional guide for sea birds.

When it comes to guides for Indonesia, your selection is limited. Besides this book there is the venerable Field Guide to the Birds of South-East Asia, a superb guide, but one that will inevitably include many species not found in Indonesia and not deal with the numerous island endemics in the region. There are also several guides to Borneo, Bali, etc. There is also a guide to Wallacea, A Guide to the Birds of Wallacea: Sulawesi, the Moluccas and Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia, which would have been perfect for me except for two things: Its taxonomy is a bit out of date (1993) and it is way out of my price range.

This is the only book I am familiar with that covers all of Indonesia specifically, and it have excellent coverage of all the island endemics, carefully listing the islands on which they can be found. I found myself wishing for a way to find the birds on a specific island, say Waigeo, but could not find a relevant index entry.

One complaint: the range maps included cover the range only within Indonesia, rather than the full range. I found this annoying.

If you are planning a birding trip to Indonesia, particularly an island cruise, I recommend this as the book to take along.

If you are going to Borneo, consider Birds of Borneo: Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak, and Kalimantan (Princeton Field Guides), and for Bali, you might prefer Birds of Bali, even though it was published in 1993.

Updated and Improved Second Edition
By Michael Chinn
In the second edition of his Photographic Guide to the Birds of Indonesia, Morten Strange has greatly improved it by adding over 200 more species, bringing the total number of species covered to 912. Many recently described species not covered in other guides, such as Togian and Little Sumba Hawk-owls and Enggano Thrush, are pictured. Other photos show characteristics incorrectly depicted in a field guide. An example is the Sulawesi Thrush: shown with a yellowish bill and feet in the field guide, the bird in life has a bright red-orange bill and feet. Though not a complete guide to all of Indonesia's birds, because of the paucity of field references this is a valuable book that any serious birder going to Indonesia should carry.

A Brief History of Everything: Revised Edition, by Ken Wilber

A
Brief History of Everything

is an altogether friendly and accessible account of men and women's place in a
universe of sex, soul, and spirit, written by an author of whom
New
York Times
reporter
Tony Schwartz says: "No one has described the path to wisdom better than
Ken Wilber."

Wilber
examines the course of evolution as the unfolding manifestation of Spirit, from
matter to life to mind, including the higher stages of spiritual development
where Spirit becomes conscious of itself. In each of these domains, there are
recurring patterns, and by looking closely at them, we can learn much about the
predicament of our world—and the direction we must take if "global
transformation" is to become a reality.

Wilber
offers a series of striking and original views on many topics of current
interest and controversy, including the gender wars, modern liberation
movements, multiculturalism, ecology and environmental ethics, and the conflict
between this-worldly and otherworldly approaches to spirituality. The result is
an extraordinary and exhilarating ride through the Kosmos in the company of one
of the great thinkers of our time.

This account of men and women's place in a universe of sex and gender, self and society, spirit and soul is written in question-and-answer format, making it both readable and accessible. Wilber offers a series of original views on many topics of current controversy, including the gender wars, multiculturalism, modern liberation movements, and the conflict between various approaches to spirituality.

Review
"In the ambitiously titled A Brief History of Everything, Wilber continues his search for the primary patterns that manifest in all realms of existence. Like Hegel in the West and Aurobindo in the East, Wilber is a thinker in the grand systematic tradition, an intellectual adventurer concerned with nothing less than the whole course of evolution, life's ultimate trajectory—in a word, everything. . . . Combining spiritual sensitivity with enormous intellectual understanding and a style of elegance and clarity, A Brief History of Everything is a clarion call for seeing the world as a whole, much at odds with the depressing reductionism of trendy Foucault-derivative academic philosophy."— San Francisco Chronicle

Read With Care: A Summary of the Content
By Roben Torosyan PhD
[For full review, see forthcoming, Torosyan, R. (2001). A system for everything: Book review of K. Wilber's Brief History of Everything. New Ideas in Psychology, 19 (3).]
Wilber manages to create a sweeping system for everything in life. He describes our spiritual evolution, and our dominant conceptual concerns: East and West, ancient and modern, individual and collective, physical and metaphysical. Wilber writes in an accessible common-sense style. He deliberately avoids a typical scholarly tone. While not free of some pretense at a monolithic voice, his work promotes rich conceptions of self-reflexiveness, interconnection, spirituality and empathy.
Wilber shows how the major theories of biological, psychological, cognitive and spiritual development describe different versions of how to find "the truth." At the outset, Wilber refers to Douglas Adams's best-selling cult novel Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. We desire final conclusions, just as Adams facetiously proposed the "answer that would completely explain 'God, life, the universe, and everything'" (p. xv). In the novel, that answer was "42," highlighting the absurdity of seeking such a final answer.
Wilber's "answer," instead, is a framework for connecting evolutionary currents. At first, he uses a Socratic dialogue, beginning with "KW" for Wilber and "Q" for the questioner, be s/he reader, fan, or friend. Initially, this appears somewhat contrived. The text pretends to be an interview, when it is clearly the author's own highly controlled construction. Upon further reading, however, the stylistic device helps Wilber engage the reader in a dialogue.
To Wilber, traditions of thought have usually been either "ascending" toward transcendental spirituality, or "descending" to the body, the senses, and sexuality (p. 11). The author suggests that humans must integrate dualities to survive as a species. In fact, we must not merely synthesize but accept the "nonduality" of ascending and descending, mind and body (p. 12).
Wilber's first chapter presents a brief summary of the entire book in the voice of the questioner:
Q: So we'll start with the story of the Big Bang itself, and then trace out the course of evolution from matter to life to mind. And then, with the emergence of mind, or human consciousness, we'll look at the five or six major epochs of human evolution itself. And all of this is set in the context of spirituality-of what spirituality means, of the various forms that it has historically taken, and the forms that it might take tomorrow. Sound right?
KW: Yes, it's sort of a brief history of everything...based on what I call 'orienting generalizations' (p. 17)
"Q" is obviously more highly informed than a first-time reader. Wilber uses Q less to ask questions than to help simplify points [the book summarizes the more complex content of Wilber's massive Sex, Ecology, Spirituality (1995)]. The "generalizations" he notes are Kohlberg's and Gilligan's moral stages. "Human moral development goes through at least three broad stages" (p. 17). In brief: before the child is socialized, it is "preconventional," as it learns the values of society it becomes "conventional," and eventually it may reflect on its own values critically, becoming increasingly "postconventional."
Wilber goes on to show a number of "tenets" or "patterns that connect." The first of these is that "reality is composed of whole/parts, or 'holons'" (p. 20). A holon is something that is itself "a whole and simultaneously a part of some other whole" (ibid.). Borrowing from Arthur Koestler, Wilber argues that the world is full of "holarchies," as opposed to hierarchies. Where a hierarchy typically separates distinct parts, a holarchy consists of both wholes that are parts, and parts that are wholes. For example, an atom is a whole of its own, but also a part of a whole molecule. A whole molecule is a part of a whole cell, and a whole cell is part of a whole organism. As Wilber says, "Time goes on, and today's wholes are tomorrow's parts" (ibid.).
Wilber uses the ideas of "depth" and "span" to say that whenever we map a territory, something always gets left out. For instance, as we narrow focus with a microscope, "There are fewer organisms than cells; there are fewer cells than molecules; there are fewer molecules than atoms; there are fewer atoms than quarks. Each has a greater depth, but less span" (p. 34). Similarly, if we move from mysticism and psychology, into biology and physics, the progression gives greater depth of specific detail but less span, embrace, or inclusion of levels of reality (pp. 36-38). These dimensions are neither dependent nor independent, but interdependent.
Great shifts in "reality" paradigms were brought by what Wilber calls "the watershed separating the modern and postmodern approaches to knowledge" (p. 58). Postmodernists criticize old paradigms such as "the Enlightenment,... the Newtonian, the Cartesian, the mechanistic, the mirror of nature, the reflection paradigm" (ibid.). In opposition, many postmodernists propose that "all truth is relative and merely culture-bound, there are no universal truths" (pp. 62-63). But as Wilber notes, even Derrida now concedes the elemental point that worldviews are not "'merely constructed' in the sense of totally relative and arbitrary" (p. 62). In Wilber's diagnosis, assertions that "there is no truth in the Kosmos, only those notions that men force on others," are nihilistic, replacing truth with "the ego of the theorist" (p. 63).
As a tool to place different worldviews, Wilber uses "four quadrants of development" (pp. 71-75). The exterior form of development is measured objectively and empirically. The interior dimension is subjective and interpretive, and hence depends on consciousness and introspection. And both interior and exterior occur not just separately but in social or cultural context.
Wilber describes how Foucault summarized the "monological madness" that dominated the eighteenth century and Enlightenment notions of the subject: "the subjective and intersubjective domains were thus reduced to empirical studies-I and we were reduced to its- and thus humans became 'objects of information, never subjects in communication'" (p. 269). Treated as objects, people were expected to meet norms of mental health, for instance, while their subjective position in the world was ignored.
Wilber says the whole of his morality aims to "protect and promote the greatest depth for the greatest span" (p. 335). He argues we must use these criteria when we make judgments. Although the spirituality risks opacity, the overall effort suggests deeply researched and grounded ways to structure reality. If we as a society need human empathy for multiple perspectives, then the patterns of thought laid out by Wilber provide a system for integrating such perspectives. Distilling messages of vast ranges of thought, Wilber presents highly differentiated worldviews and multiple points of intervention through which we can, if contingently, take action.

New Age Intelligent Design Theory
By Gregory Gilman
This is a disappointing book. I had read a couple of Wilber's earlier books and liked them, especially the superb "Grace and Grit." At his best, he can be very good at explaining a nondualistic Eastern style philosophy.

As the title suggests, this book is meant to introduce people to an all encompassing metaphysical system. No one could attempt such an enterprise without a little hubris. But why stop at a little? Wilber is fond of dropping the names of long lists of famous intellectuals whose work he finds consistent with, but subservient to, his system. Reality is sliced and diced in an endless taxonomy of levels, holons, stages, paradigm shifts, quadrants, centers, spheres and fulcrums before being reassembled into a nondualistic whole. Anyone satisfied with scientific explainations is dismissed as a "reductionist" holding what he calls "an insane world view." The science based world view is not so much argued against as it is insulted, dismissed and misrepresented.

The most remarkable thing in this book is it's bizzare description of neo-Darwinian evolutionary theory. He makes the astonishing claim that very few theorists believe in Darwinian evolution and that, "There is no evidence whatsoever for intermediate (fossil) forms." Wilber maintains it would take at least a hundred simultaneous beneficial mutations for something like a wing to evolve. He claims this would have to occur separately in both a male and a female who would then have to mate successfully. This is a grotesque caricature of Darwinan theory. Anyone who thinks it is adequate should buy this book. Others should read Richard Dawkins "Climbing Mount Improbable." Wilber never names any scientists who advocate this version of evolution for the very good reason that there aren't any.

What accounts for this straw man caricature of the most foundational scientific theory in modern biology? Well, Darwinian theory predicts that two species competing for the same niche will compete very fiercely. Wilber's Hegelian style spirit based pantheism competes with a science based pantheism in the tradition of Spinoza, Darwin and Einstein.

This book is written in a question and answer format. I bought it on audio cassette. The questions were read by a young woman. Her tone indicates she is struggling to understand. She is always co-operative and eager to receive the wisdom from on high. The answers are read by a man. His tone is authoritative and patiently condescending. This is perfect for the text.

Here is a one sentence sample, from the book, of Wilber's writing at it's worst: "So we have some very popular theorists who, tired of the burdens of postconventional and world-centric rational perspectivism, recommend a regressive slide into egocentric vital impulsive polymorphous phantasmic emotional revival." Like Hegel, Wilber has attracted legions of readers who assume that his most incomprehensible writing must be his most brilliant. If you are willing to make that assumption, this book will delight you.

Life-changing philosophy
By Tina B. Tessina
For any thinking person who's struggling with the schism between science, psychology and faith, this book has the answer. Mr. Wilber has an amazing mind, and in this book he simplifies his theoretical framework to make his brilliant thought easier to grasp. I disagree with the reader who complained about lack of references -- all the footnotes are available in his other works. This is the synthesis of his thought for those who want to understand, not those who want to nit-pick.
For me, it's a life-changing book, showing the way to order my own thoughts and experiences. Wilber is the only writer I've come across, other than James Hillman, who helps me reconcile all my disparate reading and experience.
In this book, he perfectly and succinctly outlines the growth process I see in my clients who are struggling to overcome dysfunction, find meaning in life and transcend their pasts.
I am grateful for this book's influence in my thought, and in my work as a therapist.

So inspiring! A must read for micropreneurs!
By Julie Hedlund
Reading Make Your Idea Matter was like taking a huge gulp of air after being nearly drowned by the constant messages that come into my inbox promising that if only I "build my list, use this technique to get followers, buy this product to amplify my message," I can earn six figures next month.

The reason these promises seem hollow is because they are. I'm sure people can make millions by pushing this kind of information out to people like me and charging them for it. My problem is that I want the work I do to matter to people. To make a difference in the world. To actually help people or improve their lives. I don't want to build my list for the sake of building it or for the sake of selling something to people later. I want to start a conversation. If people buy something from me, I want it to be because they believe in the product or service I am offering.

None of this is to say that money doesn't matter - it does. But the REASON why you are doing what you are doing to earn money matters more. Bernadette Jiwa's phenomenally inspiring book teaches us that and more. The book shows us how to follow our hearts first, tell our stories second, and sell third - but only by funneling our sales through our hearts and our stories.

The book is written in small, very digestible chapters. It's easy to read. I highlighted what seemed like a gazillion passages.

Get this book if you want to run a business that not only matters to you, but to the people you serve!

Title is misleading
By N. Stewart
This book is very different than I thought it would be. I thought it would be more about ways to present your ideas in to your audience in a compelling way. It ended up being a primer on branding and strategy. A really good read for a junior level marketer.

Poignant, powerful, applicable, actionable and inspirational advice
By D. Ursillo Jr.
Make Your Idea Matter by Bernadette Jiwa is the type of book you start from page one and just can't stop reading.

From the onset, this hand guide is full of poignant, powerful, applicable advice with actionable edge and a naturally motivating tone, Jiwa offers dozens and dozens of sharp insights for the modern entrepreneur, digital solopreneur, blogger, or anyone who is interesting in making an idea matter: for starting a business, developing a brand, or simply leaving behind a positive and memorable legacy.

Every page is valuable, and, honestly, the price for which you'd ultimately pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for in one-on-one consulting or coaching sessions. Every insight is directly applicable to the task at hand: what makes an idea matter? Why does making our ideas matter... actually matter to *me* in today's changing world? Where do I start when developing a brand or marketing an idea?

Bernadette's style is no-fluff, invitational and very effective. If you're familiar with Seth Godin or Steven Pressfield's sharp styles and directly-to-the-point insights, you'll love this book and immediately begin to know how to make YOUR idea matter!

Most recently, it also tackles the proliferation of concurrent hardware with new asynchronous programming features.

"C# 5 First Look" will help you get up to speed on the latest version of the language. You will learn the underlying principles of the design by exploring its evolution, then look at the asynchronous and concurrent programming facilities of the Task Parallel Framework, and the new async and await keywords. The book also takes you through the development of real-world applications for Windows 8, ASP.NET, and MacOS, using the Mono Framework.

"C# 5 First Look" will help you get up to speed on the latest version of C#. After setting up your development environment, you will go on a tour of all features of the language, including: the Task Parallel Framework, Dynamic Language Runtime, TPL Data Flow, and finally asynchronous programming with async and await.

"C# 5 First Look" will help you get up to speed on the latest version of C#. We will discuss the tools you need to get started, including Visual Studio and MonoDevelop. Once set up, we look at the highlights of the language’s evolution over every version and discuss how the framework’s design and language features contribute to the high productivity you experience as a C# programmer. Next we check out the asynchronous and concurrent programming features of the language, which help you write fast and responsive applications. Finally, the book presents and explains three fully featured pieces of software that demonstrate writing applications for the Windows Store, the Web, and MacOS with the Mono Framework.
