For the coffee table; not the kitchen

This is a beautiful book with great photos of mouthwatering potato creations. But I can never imagine getting to eat them. The author seems to revel in making things difficult. Most recipes are labor intensive with huge numbers of ingredients; one recipe had 28 ingredients. When the author lessens the number of ingredients, the rarity of those items increases. For example, there is one recipe with only four ingredients, but the critical one is truffle butter. I have never used that and do not know where to find it, or if it is worth finding.

In the Introduction the author mentions four variations of potato pancakes. However the index does not list anything under pancakes. There is no index listing for starch content, the distinguishing characteristic of most potatoes.

Perfect for parties, not for beginners

If you're looking for a 5 minute, quick and easy cookbook, Haute Potato is not for you. I usually only cook on special occasions, so I look for special recipes, and this book is chock full of them. The photography is beautiful and inviting, and the variety of cuisine types is impressive.

I made the potato cigars for a Christmas party and they turned out perfect. I should have made more! The lavender purple potato tarte was a big hit as well. And pretty too.

The book is broken down by flavor/texture, and there are lots of choices in each section that are party perfect. The mashed potato recipes are a bit obvious, but that's a minor criticism. The crispy section stands out; I wasn't aware that the French had so many variations on potatoes! I'll definitely be giving them a try

Again, this isn't an easy cookbook, but the recipes are detailed and I've been able to execute a couple to very satisfactory results.

I never knew one could do so many interesting things with potatoes. The variety is amazing: if you or your family likes potatoes, this is inspirational. Jackie Pham doesn't shrink from the complicated; but these recipes are written like one pro speaking to another, neither dumbed down nor unnecessarily fussy. She does give tips and tricks to special preparations. The photos, a key motivational element in any cookbook, are mouthwatering and helpful to guide presentation. Makes a beautiful gift as well as a very useful addition to a cookbook library.

A Must Read for All Residents in the Inner Suburbs

This book was highly recommended for me to read. I have considerable interest in trying to find solutions to Transportation issues affecting the GTHA. The author provided me with some background to the issues that I would not necessarily have read during my research. Ed Keenan's personal perspective while living in Scarborough was quite illuminating.
This book is best read in sections. There is much to ponder, especially when reading the material on David Miller and Rob Ford.

As a senior in high school I took a class on the History of the Vietnam War. BLOODS was not required reading for the class nor do I remember the teacher talking specifically about Black Veterans, but since I enjoyed the class I wanted to read some more firsthand accounts of what the soldiers went through. I noticed BLOODS in the Vietnam section of the bookstore and on a whim I started reading it in the store and was really into it, so I bought it.

BLOODS is the oral history of twenty black veterans of the Vietnam War, and the author is also a veteran. The stories in it are gripping and you can sense what a horrible experience war is, particularly for these minority soldiers who are fighting for an America that hasn't always been fair to them. This book gave me a perspective that I was glad to get.

As a result of Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," there has been a renewed interest in stories of our war veterans. BLOODS provides the kinds of insights into war and the military that only those who've experienced its horrors can convey. The additional (and key) component of race adds another dimension to this remarkable tale.

About the Author
Wallace Terry, born in Harlem in 1938, attended Brown University and the University of Chicago and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. He worked as a reporter for the Washington Post and later Time magazine, where he covered the Civil Rights Movement in America and the Vietnam War. He wrote for many publications, taught journalism at Howard University, and was the author of Bloods, a national best-seller about blacks in the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Janice, their three children--Tai, Lisa, and David--and two grandchildren.

gives great dimension to the VN experience

This is similar to Santoli's book regarding individual experiences in the Vietnam conflict. You definitely get a feel for the Vietnam experience, and it is very readable. The narratives portray the unique challenges of this experience, along with the added dimension of the race issue. The range of assessments of the racial issue was amazing and educational for me; some of the vets had active civil-rights values and even revolutionary values before getting to Vietnam, and some had little or no opinions regarding race relations despite the turbulent times. The great range of views regarding whites and the dominant U.S. culture, including government, was intriguing. The attitudes toward the Vietnamese, both North- and South-, also held great range, and was fascinating. This leads me to feel that the strength of this memorable book is the common experience conveyed simultaneously with the diversity of experiences and attitudes.
My only disappointment was that I could not tell the manner in which the narratives were elicited. Were these vets asked to describe their Vietnam experience? Were they asked to explain what it was like to be a Black soldier?

I give the book five stars, and that is not because I am in it!!!!

I would love to respond to all of the comments and customer reviews. My name is Traci Daniels, and my father Robert L. Daniels, one of the soldiers profiled in this book, just passed away on January 3rd, 2008. I was in the picture with him in the book and am now a 27 year old successful businesswoman. My father and I were fiercely close, and the pain, mental and physical anguish that he suffered due to Vietnam still lives on with the current conflict in Iraq. I, too, would also love to know what happened to some of the other participants in the book. Please respond if you are out there, and God bless you.

If you're first, you don't have to be the best - as long as it's a good standard

This is an appropriately-priced e-book, and is a solid example of what the format can provide - longform nonfiction work that's timely right now, but would be much less so in six months when a reader's attention has been diverted (Politico's Kindle series is good too, though I've only read excerpts).

It's a fun read, with plenty of behind-the-scenes anecdotes collected in one lengthy format. Hastings' accounts of his often contentious relations with fellow journalists and Obama campaign officials are entertaining and snarkily told. His reporting - a lot of which his endnotes explain was compiled by and credited to other journalists - gives a good, broad overview of the last couple months of the Obama campaign, when things looked good for his reelection, then horrible, then okay, then unsure, until the victory that with hindsight looks inevitable - I mean, President Romney? Really? Just three months later, that seems so silly.

Hastings is at his best when he goes after everyone with his brand of lacerating humor. He describes Press Secretary Jay Carney as a "regime collaborator," which is just so over-the-top and meanspirited and original - and appropriate. Carney, a former Time reporter, crossed over to the bigtime of politics, so if he's not a "collaborator," what is he?

The biggest flaw is there's not enough in the book of what makes Hastings work so fun to read. In The Operators, which I also liked, he related point-by-point conversations with exquisite detail - he looked bad, they looked bad, everybody looked bad. But it was honest, and that gave it value.

Here, he often starts what could be an equally great scene, but doesn't go far enough. He tries to crash a dinner of campaign officials (Jon Favreau, Samantha Powers, others) and is turned away - rudely? Politely? He leaves it out, unfortunately.

The book switches between first-person scenes, and after-the-fact reporting, a style he also used in The Operators. In that book, I preferred the first-person parts, but in "Panic 2012," I thought the more objective reported scenes were a little stronger.

Flaws aside, this is ideal for the format. If I'd paid $25 for a hardcover, it might have seemed a little wanting, but I felt good value here. It was a good, quick - but not trifling - read for a flu-ridden day.

If Richard Ben Cramer's What It Takes: The Way to the White House or Hunter Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 are 10 of 10s on the campaign book scale, this is a solid 7, with reservations for its level of comprehensiveness. That is a price for speed, but the flipside is all these events are still in reader's minds, which makes the narrative a lot more compelling.

This book will be surpassed in months to come. Other reporters, with more access and time will do a better job at retelling this story. The key word is "retelling." Hastings got there first with this entertaining campaign narrative that will satisfy a lot of appetites.

An absolute mess that's somehow reasonably engrossing

Wow. Sheesh. What an absolute mess. The tone lurches between neutral reportorial and over-the-top gonzo without rhyme or reason; stories with scant payoff are tediously set up; syntax can be so garbled that you find yourself rereading sentences four or five times. You get the feeling the whole thing was dictated while jogging. I realize it's only an e-book, but, c'mon, Hastings, would a second draft have killed you?

Obama gave a speech, accepting his victory for a final term. Parties at the Fairmont and the Boss Bar went pretty late; there were a few meltdowns at the InterContinental."

...and that's it. What sort of meltdowns? He doesn't say. Instead, we're on to the day after, and another slew of disjointed, unrewarding observations. (BTW, I don't remember Obama giving two speeches that night. Again, dude: a second draft wouldn't have killed you!)

All the expected junctures are dutifully hit, including a big fat section on Obama's terrible first debate performance. Hastings recounts the lead-up day in tedious detail, but there's no takeaway, just scattered speculations. Obama got some bad advice. He was tired. He had a bumpy plane flight. The moderator killed the room's enthusiasm. It's essentially a chapter-long tap dance around "Geez, I have no idea".

And as for that painfully edgy subtitle: "Sublime and Terrifying Inside Story", there's nothing the least bit sublime or terrifying here. And there's certainly no inside story, unless by "inside" you mean a bedraggled journalist, denied access, padding out his word count with hapless complaints about the monotony of the road and about the many idiots he has to contend with to do his job. The choice to run that subtitle, like the choice to do this as an e-book, reeks of grabby sweaty marketing jazz. Sizzle sans steak. Do as little as you possibly can get away with and hope people jump up and buy.

But here's the thing. In spite of all this, Hastings is such a naturally talented reporter, that, amazingly, the result's not a complete failure. There are good nuggets, and once you figure out that it's not worth the trouble of unravelling the knots, or pondering anything too deeply, this makes for a surprisingly engrossing - though insanely erratic - read in spite of itself. Five bucks? What the hell.

I'll round a 2.5 star rating up to 3, just because you can't give half stars.

I like Michael Hastings. This book starts out sounding like it might be a Hunter Thompson-like "Fear and Loathing" campaign chronicle, but it quickly becomes evident that Hastings isn't that crazy. He paints a pretty clear picture of the White House press corps and what life is like for a peripheral, new media reporter who is "allowed" to come along for the ride. Michael shows how hard it is to get anything from the major campaign players and in the end, paints a very clear picture of how and why the suck-up reporters are what dominates the news we get today. Michael exercises some gonads and admits some mistakes as he learns the ropes. After reading it, I had a clearer understanding of why Hunter Thompson needed so much medication to report on the Nixon campaign back in '72.

Somewhat helpful

This book had some useful information on common and not so common natural remedies, however, it could have been more helpful if set up differently. It's organized alphabetically by herb name. It would have helped me more if set up by ailment with herbs listed by effectiveness for various illnesses. As it is, the reader has to go through all the herbs in order to discover what each treats. At least it could have included an index of ailments at the end.

Isn't it amazing that some people will even complain about something that they got for free! Is this an exhaustive text on every herb with copious amounts of info & pictures? In a word, NO. Does it have a lot of very useful information? Definitely! Well worth the read, and after all it's free, so forget the whiners and just have a look at it for yourself.

A book for anyone seeking healing on any level.

This book can serve as an introduction to Shamanism, in reference to the indigenous culture of Peru. Very different than the Nagualism of Castaneda and Ruiz, which are much more mental and less down to Earth. At the same time I would recommend this book for anyone who is seeking self-help, especially healing from mental stress or emotional distress. I am very well read in reference to Shamanistic philosophy, which is not a religion, but rather an approach to becoming holistically human which many ancient cultures employed. This book is accessible to any intelligent reader and will clarify many possible paths to healing, even for those who already have a chosen spiritual path..Insight for all.

The tyro learning something about Buddhism will have noticed a trend in books: many are either about how to meditate or they're about theory. Fewer present Buddhist basics from the perspective of practice (that is, practice above and beyond meditation). Filling that gulch is this hefty volume by Ray, a Naropa University Buddhist studies professor, who presents ideas and actions, theory and practice. This book is distinguished by the author's comprehensive attention to detail. He explains both Buddhist cosmology and the history of Buddhism, and cogently outlines Geluk Buddhism, a line of monastic traditions from central Tibet. While many books focus exclusively on Geluk (which is a bit like using the example of Roman Catholicism to explain all of Christianity), Ray also explores non-Geluk practices, though he does not always flag a given practice as Geluk or other. There may be too much of a good thing hereDhistory, doctrine, practice, Geluk, non-Geluk, the kitchen sink. The novice may easily lose the forest for the trees. Clearer chapter introductions would have gone a long way to ameliorating that problem, and a glossary would have been more helpful than the chronology of important dates appended to the book's end. Ray refers to, but never delves deeply into, Tantric Buddhism (but his announced Shambhala 2001 title promises to pick up where this book left off). This tome belongs primarily to the very devoted and the very knowledgeable.

This engrossing book promises to be of enduring value to those with an interest in Tibetan Buddhism, or the history and culture of Tibet itself. Ray is a student of Chogyam Trunpa Rinpoche and an accomplished teacher in his own right, benefitting students at Naropa University and Rocky Mountain Shambhala Center, both in Colorado. His decades of experience and thoughfulness shine through in this text, reportedly the first of two volumes providing historical and cultural context to the practice of Tibetan Buddhism.
"Indestructible Truth" does not attempt to address every aspect of Buddhism as it has developed in various countries. Rather, it examines how Tibetans have traditionally viewed the teachings and the cosmos from within their own cultural framework. Ray skillfully blends objective data, personal experience, and teachings from accomplished masters to relay this perspective.
The book provides portraits of each of the four principal schools of Tibetan Buddhism and the great masters and teachers that founded each. The reader is left with a strong preliminary understanding of the differences between the lineages, which can sometimes seem overly subtle to the beginner. A recurring theme is the varying emphases placed on meditation versus study among the four schools. Ray cogently describes how the four lineages approach the Dharma differently, without diluting the power and importance of any. His careful attention to the Nyingma and Kagyu schools, typically downplayed in many introductions, is alone a valuable addition to the literature. In addition, he provides a short but insightful introduction into the Rime tradition that highlighted the value and usefulness of all the lineages.
Another section describes the principal views of the Buddhist paths of Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, both in theory and practice. This is a useful outline of the practices and study points Buddhism makes available to interested students and practitioners. It shows how each is interrelated and yet can also stand alone, depending on the needs and inclinations of the practitioner.
One small caution. Ray's identification with the Kagyu tradition (one I admittedly share) is subtle, but noticeable in his selection of quotations from teachers to describe various Buddhist views. I personally found the approach interesting and the descriptions cogent, and certainly the teachers are themselves above reproach. Students of, for example, the Gelug view of emptiness, however, may prefer an explanation delivered from an adherent. On the other hand, this approach does provide a strong foundation for describing each of the three Turnings of the Wheel of the Dharma with continuity in the teachers' voices. The discussion of the "shentong," or empty-of-other view of buddhanature is as good an introduction as is possible for so profound a topic, and again, an unusual find in an introductory text.
I eagerly await the companion volume, "Secret of the Vajra World," which is to focus on the esoteric views and practices of Tantric Buddhism, due later this year.

Solid place to start serious study

Ray offers an accessible introduction to the origins, cosmos and cultural context of Tibetan Buddhism. Easier to follow than other intros (like Thurman's Essential Tibetan Buddhism), but doesn't ignore important details. Especially good delineation of the four principal schools. If Ray included a discussion of the important role of the indigenous Bon religion in shaping modern Tibetan Buddhism, I missed it. Focused more directly on the knowledge component of wisdom than on experience. Still Ray's explanations burned through the fog of my confusion

Scholarly work and reference, not good for beginners

This is volume one of a two part work on Tibetan Buddhism by Reginald Ray. It is well-written, extremely comprehensive and thoroughly researched. There is an overwhelming amount of detail for most beginners, however.

If you are looking for a detailed scholarly work or a good reference to contextualize other reading, this will meet your needs. However, you may want to try an "Introduction to Tantra" by Lama Yeshe for a more accessible introduction to Vajrayana.

If you are completely new to Buddhism, then I would recommend Huston Smith's "The World's Religions" for an excellent, but short overview. If you purchase this book, you will have added the bonus of being able to read a similar introduction to Hinduism which I think is important for understanding Buddhist thought in a similar way that grasping the essentials of Judaism are important for a full understanding of the origin and development of Christianity.

It is very difficult to "get" Tibetan Buddhism without understanding the unfolding of the Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. While this volume does an excellent job of doing this, it is also HUGE. The disadvantage of some of the short books on Tibetan Buddhism is that they sometimes don't do a great job of contextualizing the various Buddhist traditions and how they unfolded in time and/or geographically.

If you merely want a taste of Tibetan Buddhist thought, then you may want to look at the book "The Art of Happiness" by Howard Cutler and the Dalai Lama. This presents some Tibetan ideas on everyday issues along with some commentary by a western psychiatrist. This book is not an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism as such, however.
