Brubaker gets his ducks in order for "Reborn".

Ed Brubaker's stellar run on "Captain America" enters a transitive phase here, as one might divine from the title to this trade paperback collection, which is aimed at positioning it as a lead-up to the events of the "Captain America: Reborn" miniseries (the mere title of which should tell you quite a bit). This is very much a worthwhile collection, featuring a collection of strong artists (including the possible last hurrah of one of the greats of the Bronze Age of Comics). Herein are collected issues #49-50 and 600-601 (thanks to the miracle of renumbering, Marvel got to do two back-to-back anniversary issues). Some spoilers follow.

The first two of these are illustrated by Luke Ross, the replacement regular artist for Steve Epting (partnered with Butch Guice). #49 focuses on Sharon Carter, Steve Rogers' girlfriend (on and off), who was used as his assassin by the Red Skull in previous stories. She was temporarily put off-panel for six issues for #43 to 48, and so Brubaker uses this issue as an opportunity to update the audience on what she has been up to in the aftermath of her ordeal in "The Death of Captain America". It's a well-written character one-shot, including a long-needed update of Sharon's relation to Steve's World War II girlfriend Peggy (changed from sister to niece), and the trailer for a future story concerning another loose end from that era. This is followed by what is probably my favourite of the issues collected here, a single-issue story focussing on Bucky Barnes, on the theme of various birthday celebrations. We see various episodes, such as a wartime party where the procurement of a cake inadvertently leads to a clash with supervillains, and a surprisingly upbeat ending showing how far Bucky has come in the world.

The big issue is, of course, #600, which is about as long as the other three combined, between the main story, two supplemental stories, and various other odds-and-ends. The main story by Brubaker and a phalanx of talented artists checks in on what various characters are doing on the first anniversary of the death of Captain America. This includes not just the main cast and the villains, but also such odd ends of the mythos as Rikki Barnes, a sidekick from the "Heroes Reborn" universe. Brubaker uses this as a direct lead-in to "Reborn", though one plot development involving how Steve was shot feels a bit dropped-in rather inelegantly.

Finally, #601 is a standalone war story that is drawn by Gene Colan, one of the original Captain America artists (co-creator of
the Falcon, among other things). It also incorporates Colan's time as an artist of the supernatural ("Tomb of Dracula") in the 1970s. It's a solid piece of work, and fans of Colan will definitely want it.

All in all, probably a four-star collection.

A giant love song for Captain America, dedicated to his legacy

This collects Captain America #49-50 and #600-601. For those confused, after issue fifty Marvel decided to number the remaining issues based on how many issues have carried the title. Sometimes they relaunch titles as #1 after breaks or significant changes, and on the same vein they renumber to correspond with significant changes too. In this case, after #50 the next issue would be the 600th issue to carry Cap's name and they make use of that by remembering the legacy and the story thus far, paying homage throughout these four issues.

Now in terms of the entire Captain America story, where it has been and where it is going... there isn't too much. The details they do give, while important, can be inferred to have happened in later issues. What we get instead is four issues dedicated to reminding the reader everything about Captain America's story: The basics really quick in the beginning, and the most recent development of Steve Roger's death and Bucky's ascent to replace him. The story here is mostly people dealing with his death, from former partners to former girlfriends to former enemies. There is a mention to tie in to the Reborn limited series, and a little set up for issues to come but otherwise, it's just nostalgia and one-shots but that's not a bad thing.

Surprisingly Bucky isn't in focus for a a good portion of it. There is the backstory mentioning him, a quick one-shot story about growing up under Captain America and birthdays, him deciding to attend Steve's vigil, and a WWII era one-issue story showcasing how they worked. There is a lot dedicated to what Sharon Carter is going through, and how she's dealing with the trauma of his death and what she was forced to do (obviously, not well, but better than you might suspect). They also touch up on 50's Replacement Cap (whose name escapes me), Sin and Crossbones in jail, and Steve's ex-girlfriend Bernie and how they react to Captain America's death in their own ways. It's all touching and sentimental, driving in how central the character is to the mythos.

The art is standard for this run on Captain America. Meaning, it's excellent and there aren't really any complaints. It's a bit archaic in the front; but, as that's recapping Cap it's appropriate for drawing upon a specific time so no problem there.

Overall it's not something that is vital to understand Captain America but great for fans who might feel nostalgic or really enjoy Captain America's character. It builds that up, and reminds the reader of how great he is, to prepare for his return.

Brubaker is one of the best!

The best thing about Ed Brubaker writing Captain America is his absolute love for the character, history, and mythos. Brubaker somehow "killed" Steve Rogers, replaced him with the impossible, and is still able to make unbelievable stories month in and month out. Here we get to read an amazing look at how so many different individuals are one year after Cap's assassination. Add to that some fantastic looks back into Bucky's past. The art was almost an A+ across the board with only a few missteps. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and agree that Brubaker is one of comics' finest writers.

About the Author

Yvonne Zylan, Associate Professor of Sociology, earned a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale University, a Ph.D. in sociology from New York University and a juris doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law. She has published articles in the Michigan Journal of Gender & Law, the Michigan Journal of Law Reform, Gender & Society, Social Forces, the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, and Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society. Prof. Zylan's areas of scholarship include law and society, sexuality, social theory, political sociology, and the state and social policy. Her current work is centrally concerned with feminist theory and praxis, and addresses the social construction of sex, gender, and the body in and through legal discourse. Prior to joining the Hamilton faculty, Prof. Zylan practiced law for three years in the litigation department at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP and she remains a member of the bar in good standing in the State of California and in the federal courts of the 9th District. In 2005, she appeared before the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the 9th Circuit challenging state and federal bankruptcy law as applied to same-sex couples.

An Extremely Timely Text

I normally don't take the time to write reviews, but this book pulls together a myriad of laws and precedents for anti-gay hate crimes and same-sex marriage... then takes it to the next level by providing insight into the larger cultural issues that surround this most current topic of our day. I'm a lay-person (not a lawyer), so it took some effort to read, but it was well worth the time.

Appendixes include a ranking of coaches by their wins and an extensive bibliography. This is no coffee-table sports book (there are no photographs, and the text is dense, both in style and as laid out on the page), but it is a good choice for public library circulating collections, especially where there are football fans. --Rebecca Vnuk

John Maxymuk is a reference librarian at Rutgers University, living in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He has written poetry, book and movie reviews, travel pieces, feature articles in magazines, library-related articles in academic journals, and organizational newsletters. He has been the internet columnist for The Bottom Line: Managing Library Finances since 1997 and was the issue editor for the Notable Documents issue of Journal of Government Information for 10 years. He is listed in Contemporary Authors and in Who's Who in America.

Excellent source of information-however

I will agree with most of the previous reviewers (on Library Thing) and say that this is a wealth of knowledge for anyone who is a fan of the game of football or the NFL in general. The book is well organized and very well researched. My favorite item is the listing as to whether or not each has/had played collegiality or professionally and where.
The voice used is that of a reference librarian or historian (I happen to be the former as well) and I know how difficult it can be to maintain a neutral voice- the author here does an excellent job of not allowing personal bias to interfere with the facts. For that I say well done.
This is a great book for nay sports "geeks" you may know (or for yourself) and a wonderful reference to have handy.
The reason for not giving this work more "starts" is that several important (to me at least) appendices are missing (strangely), not the least of which would be a chronological listing of all of the coaches by team. I gave this book to the biggest NFL nut I know and he said.. "AWESOME!...ooh there was the coach of the Browns.. in the early 70's .. what was his name.. I think it started with a "n"..I want to look Him up.." I said- there should be an appendix that lists the names so you can look it up that way- I was wrong. This seems like a no-brainer- and you have the information. To use the as a reference, you have to know WHO you are looking for or you are forced to read the entire book looking- or find a secondary source.
Would also be nice to see a complete listing of win/loss records (the ranking information with the author's algorithm is very interesting), a listing of number of total years coaching in the NFL. Basically some added information that would give non-geek readers a reason to pick up the book. Who is the coach that has coached the MOST years in the league, what coach of team XXX did what.
All in all the information contained is excellent and I recommend this book fully- but there is so much more that could have been included to make it more useful as a "reference".

About the Author
TODD LONDON is in his fifteenth season as artistic director of New Dramatists, where he has worked closely with more than a hundred of America’s leading playwrights and advocated nationally and internationally for hundreds more. A former Managing Editor of American Theatre magazine and the author of The Artistic Home, published by TCG, he has written, edited, and/or contributed to eleven books. Last fall saw the completion and publication of Theatre Development Fund’s (TDF) Outrageous Fortune, a four-year study of new play production in America, for which Todd has served as project director and senior writer. His particular brand of advocacy journalism has focused on both the lives and livelihoods of individual artists and on the not-for-profit theatre movement, especially the impact of institutionalization on the field. His magazine essays and articles on the theatre have been translated for publication in Russia, North and South Africa, Scandinavia, Serbia, and Romania. Todd won the prestigious George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism for his essays in American Theatre and a Milestone Award for his first novel, The World’s Room, published by Steerforth Press. In 2001 he accepted a special Tony® Honor on behalf of New Dramatists, and in 2005 he represented New Dramatists at the Obie Awards, where the organization was honored with the Ross Wetzsteon Award for excellence. In 2009, Todd was recognized by TCG with the inaugural Visionary Leadership Award, for an individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to advance the theatre field as a whole, nationally and/or internationally.

This is an enthralling read. It is also an essential resource for any theater student, teacher, artist or administrator. The founding essays and manifestos compiled here are beautiful, inspiring and fascinating. And the editor's introduction do a brilliant job of putting each piece in context. Taken all together, this is the most thorough, insightful, and original history of the American theater movement I have ever encountered -- and it's all the more valuable because it's in the words of the field's leaders and pioneers.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has forged, is forging, or hopes to forge a life in the American theater. You will return to it over and over, as I plan to do.

Also, I found the paperback to be of very high quality. I read the book cover-to-cover and had no issues with it falling apart.

This is a good book content-wise

This is a good book content-wise, but I opened mine to read it and the spine broke! I get paper books instead of electronic ones in order to build a library I can share with anyone who comes to my office. I could not read a single sentence before the book started falling apart, even though it's brand new. Very disappointing. I recommend an electronic version.

Your Avid editing bay is incomplete without this book!

The Avid Media Composer 6.x Cookbook is a fantastic source of information for users of all different experience levels. A beginner can pick this book up and have a solid understanding of the program by the end. Being a more advanced user myself, I picked up many helpful and time-saving tips after reading through it.

It walks the reader through things step-by-step, with screenshots of some of the more difficult and in-depth tasks. The typical instructional section will start with "Getting Ready," then to "How To Do It..." and finally, "There's More..." giving a really thorough look at the task at hand. Items covered run from the simple (Exporting a Still Image) to the complex (MultiCamera Mode Editing).

There is also ample additional information about various terminology within the program that is written in plain English as well as 3 appendixes with even more information. The Avid Media Composer 6.x Cookbook is less a "cookbook" than an encyclopedia! This will make a very useful reference book for anyone who utilizes Avid Media Composer 6 - your editing bay would be incomplete without it. Highly recommended.

Info from the ground up

Having had a chance to get through this I found it to be excellently written with a good emphasis on basics but also, through the "There's more..." sections, a good amount of in depth tips that many seasoned users will find useful. It is indeed a cookbook, with well laid out recipes for how to complete specific tasks and good emphasis on what to do in preparation for these tasks. A great guide to have around for beginners and a useful reference for the more advanced. Thanks Ben!!

Georges Simenon (1903-1989) was a phenomenally successful author of crime fiction. His 75 Maigret novels and 28 Maigret short stories were published between 1931 and 1972 to great international acclaim (he is the only non-anglophone crime writer to have achieved such renown).

His Maigret stories are regarded by many as having established a new direction in crime fiction, emphasizing social and psychological portraiture rather than focussing on a puzzle to be solved or on "action."

This book examines the importance of social class and social change in the Maigret stories, giving a particular emphasis to the early formative novels and the development of plot, characterization and setting. The author seeks to establish the extent to which Simenon's portrait of French society is historically accurate and the nature of the influence of the author's own class position and ideology on his fiction.

About the Author
Bill Alder is an associate lecturer in French with the Open University in the United Kingdom. He has published articles in English and French on Maigret, Simenon and crime fiction, in American, British and Belgian journals. He lives in France.

Simenon's Maigret novels in the context of French social change

Bill Alder, as his brief biographical note indicates, is an academic whose passions focus on Georges Simenon, Simenon's fictional Commissaire Jules Maigret of the Paris Police Judiciare, and crime fiction in general. Still, a literary critic he is not, and readers picking up "Maigret, Simenon and France: Social Dimensions of the Novels and Stories" should be warned that they will not find herein a celebration of the Maigret body of work or plot summaries of their favorite novels. Instead, what Alder offers is a tightly written and academically-oriented look at how the Maigret novels reflect, or fail to reflect in many regards, the social changes at work in France throughout the 20th century.

The major finding of Alder's book is the very minimal degree to which the Maigret novels reference timely developments occurring in France over the 40-year period, beginning in the early 1930s, during which Simenon wrote these books. Indeed, after 1945 Simenon lived outside France, and, as Alder notes in chapter 5 of his book, the setting and social environments of his subsequent books reflect an idealized France of the 1930s. To cite but one example, several Maigret novels reference the social dysfunction of East Europeans (especially Poles) living in France in the interwar period but none mention the vast postwar influx of North African, Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian workers. At the same time, some Maigret novels deal with the aftereffects of World War II, but few if any give a sense of what it was like to live through World War II as it occurred.

If these observations leave the impression that this book focuses alone on what is missing from the Maigret novels, let me hasten to assure you that that is not the case. Alder's study credits Simenon's sensitivity to French class consciousness with providing the material that so captivates readers as they devour the Maigret mysteries. And with "Maigret, Simenon and France," you will pick up considerable information about how a changing economy and an influx of immigrants have impacted definitions of social class. To some degree, this line of reasoning is complex, and terms such as proletariat, peasant, bourgeoisie, petite bourgeoisie, moyenne bourgeoisie, and haute bourgeoisie may leave your head spinning. Powering through this material, however, is worth the effort. In the end, it is this material that sheds the most light on the interactions of characters in the Maigret novels and helps explain social frictions at work even now.

Flicts é um clássico, uma obra prima do Ziraldo. Mas essa versão foi “jogada” no formato digital, sem o menor cuidado. A fonte ficou tão pequena que não dá para ler. Implementaram um “jeitinho” para tentar resolver o problema, que traz uma caixa de texto em fonte maior quando você clica, Mas essa caixa fica na frente das ilustrações perdendo toda a graça do livro, que justamente faz com maestria o jogo entre palavras e ilustração. Uma pena!

Lessons of kindness in the works of Ziraldo

Ziraldo is a great writer. Apparently writing and drawing for children, this beloved Brazilian artist's works offer great lessons in humanity. This book is particularly touching because it deals with rejection of the "Other", the one that doesn't fit with the majority. I also loved it that Neil Armstrong confirmed the final words of the book. I would recommend all of Ziraldo's books for children and adults alike.

Inspiring story and guide on how loans can create a circle of gratitude

Carol Peppe Hewitt gets down to brass tacks in her inspiring new book, Financing Our Foodshed: Growing Local Food with Slow Money. Let's not wait for the banks and the Big Dogs to revive the economy. Let's do it ourselves, by investing at least a slice of our money in our local farms, food processors, and restaurants.

Carol is supremely full of energy and good ideas. As the co-founder of Slow Money NC, she connects people with money to those who need it. It's business, and as serious as it needs to be, but also loads of fun. As she writes,

Some walk the walk, some talk the talk. We meet and eat.

She and the other co-founders, Lyle Estill and Jordan Puryear, do all of this as volunteers. At the end of the book, we learn that after nearly two years of all-volunteer work and after raising $465,000 for loans, Carol finally got a paid part-time assistant "to keep the momentum going."

Local bakers, not Wall Street banks -- When Carol talks investment, she means more than eating at a farm-to-fork restaurant or shopping at the farmers' market, although she wants you do to those things too. She means loaning money to local farmers and food-related businesses so they can buy equipment and supplies, make payroll, and keep their businesses running.

For example, she describes how two of the first Slow Money NC loans helped local icon Angelina's Kitchen get through some tough startup times to become a hub of local food and community in Pittsboro. These loans created a "circle of gratitude."

One of the Best Ideas of the Year

Slow money is a bit of a takeoff on slow food. In this case, the idea is to loan money and get a small return (which means it grows slowly).

I love the idea.

It is a story of local people. In this case, it is the story of people who loan small amounts of money to people to allow them to start businesses. The businesses mostly revolve around food - mostly the preparation of it. For example, one food entrepreneur wanted a loan to winterize a building so food production (Jams, Jelly and winter produc like kale and sweet potatoes etc) could be sold year around.

There are the lenders who are paid a modest (like 2%) interest. Their motivation is to give something back and to help their community. And the borrower who want to start or expand a small business. What makes this work is the volunteerism in vetting the deals combined with the community that supports the companies (as customers and more).

This program reminds me of Kiva but more local. In the case of North Carolina slow money, it is less automated and more personal. With Kiva, the lenders make no interest but the organizations that do the lending, collecting and accounting make fees and interest and unfortunately, in many cases, those are too high and make the money expensive.

Good book. I liked the stories. Probably partly of interest to me since I know some of the people involved including my brother who has a prominent part.

Slow Money: An intriguing idea

Carol gave me this book last year at a Slow Money NW gathering. I had come to learn more about the concept of Slow Money and was immediately intrigued. Thank you Carol for giving me this book. The book itself is chock full of stories, which I really enjoyed. I like the concept espoused by slow money, which is that people in a community should band together and invest for the betterment their community's health and well-being. And to do this, supporting the people who are responsible for bringing consumers healthy, organic, and local foods is necessary. On paper it looks easy, but it doesn't seem that way. It takes a lot of hard work, publicity, the right connections, and motivated people to make this happen. And I think the challenge is to involve people who are not wealthy or have the means but those who survive paycheck to paycheck. How to convince them to invest in a farmer, baker, butcher, etc? Convincing the middle class seems really important-- otherwise the heavy lifting is left to the wealthier people. Thanks for these inspiring ideas and I hope they are spreading!
