KATHLEEN M. EISENHARDT is the S. W. Ascherman Professor of Strategy at Stanford, a highly cited author, and the co-director of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program. Her research focuses on strategy, strategic decision making, and organizational design in highly uncertain markets. She is the coauthor of "Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos", winner of the George R. Terry Book Award. A fellow of the World Economic Forum and the Clinton Global Initiative, she is also the first author featured in "Harvard Business Review" s On Point collections. She was recently named the most cited researcher in strategy and organization studies during the past twenty-five years, and has received four honorary degrees. Most teams self-destruct. Don’t let that happen to yours.

This is one in a series of anthologies of individual articles that the editors of Harvard Business Review consider to be the “must reads” in a given business subject area, in this instance teamwork. I have no quarrel with any of their ten selections, each of which is eminently deserving of inclusion. Were all of these article purchased separately as reprints, the total cost would be $60 and the value of any one of them exceeds that. Given the fact that Amazon now sells this one for only $13.53, that’s quite a bargain. The same is true of volumes in other series such as “Harvard Business Review on….” and “Harvard Business Essentials.” I also think there is great benefit derived from the convenience of having a variety of perspectives and insights gathered in a single volume

In all of the volumes in the “10 Must Read” series that I have read thus far, the authors and HBR editors make skillful use of several reader-friendly devices that include “Idea in Brief” and “Idea in Action” sections, checklists with and without bullet points, boxed mini-commentaries (some of which are “guest” contributions from other sources, and graphic charts and diagrams that consolidate especially valuable information. These and other devices facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review later of key points later.

Those who read this volume will gain valuable information, insights, and counsel that will help them to boost team performance through mutual accountability, motivate large and diverse groups to tackle complex projects, increase their teams emotional intelligence, prevent or resolve decision gridlock, extract collaborative results from a group of superstars, and disagree constructively with colleagues at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise.

From “The New Science of Building Great Teams,” Alex (“Sandy”) Pentland: “With remarkable consistency, the data showed that the most important predictor of a team’s success was its communication patterns. In fact, the researchers could tell which teams would outperform simply by looking at the data on their communication, without even meeting the members.”

From “How Management Teams Can Have a Good Fight,” co-authored by Kathleen Eisenhardt, Jean Kahwajy, and L.J. Bourgeois III: “How can managers encourage the kind of substantive [principled] debate over issues that leads to better decision making? We found five approaches that help generate constructive disagreement within a team:

1. Assemble a heterogeneous team, including diverse ages, genders, functional backgrounds, and industry experience.
2. Meet together as a team regularly and often.
3. Encourage team members to assume roles beyond their obvious product, geographic, or functional responsibilities.
4. Apply multiple mind-sets to an issue.
5 Actively manage conflict by mitigating interpersonal conflict.

Couple of really good articles, but a bit short on content

I really like the HBR Must Reads series, but this book seemed attenuated and lacking in more current thought leader criteria. Still worth a look, but The Discipline of Teams is arguably the best selection. Wish there was more content.

I found the article, Eight Ways to Build Collaborative Teams (Gratton & Erickson, 2007), to be my favorite out of HBR’S 10 Must Reads (2013). Building a team that knows how to work together is a tremendous benefit in today’s growing business culture. The article proposes that “the qualities required for success are the same qualities that undermine success” (Gratton & Erickson, 2007, p. 56). These qualities for building collaborative teams are being large, virtual participation, diversity and the high educational levels. This article suggests using the eight ways to build collaboration in teams with complex and major initiatives. They refer to the large actions that companies need to make to stay competitive or change to create value.

Gratton and Erickson began by researching fifty-five large teams that seems to demonstrate high levels of collaboration in order to find similarities in their practices (2007). What they found were four categories in which all the businesses seems to “overcome substantially the difficulties that were posed by size, long-distance communication, diversity and specialization” (Gratton & Erickson, 2007, p. 58). The four categories were executive support, HR practices, strength of the team leader and the structure of the team. The rest of this review breaks down each of the four categories in which the authors came up with their eight ways to build collaborative teams.

Executive Support

“At the most basic level, a team’s success or failure at collaborating reflects the philosophy of the top executives in the organization” (Gratton & Erickson, 2007, p. 59). Top leaders have to (1) invest in signature relationship practices. Gratton and Erickson found that “in every case the company’s top executives had invested significantly n building and maintaining social relationship throughout the organization (2007, p. 60). But it is not enough just to invest in this for employees, executives need to (2) model collaborative behavior. People should see the top leaders working hand in hand with others. “A senior team’s collaborative nature trickles down throughout the organization” (Gratton & Erickson, 2007, p. 63). Another area executive support is needed is by (3) creative a gift culture. This gift culture is made up of leaders investing time, energy and resources in mentoring and coaching. It should be evident in both themselves personally and throughout the entire organization. The huge benefit of this practice is that it allows people within the organization to build the networks they need to do the work they have been tasked with across the company (2007).

HR Practices

Surprisingly, Gratton and Erickson’s research showed, reward systems didn’t have a noticeable effect on collaborative behavior in the companies they interviewed. More so, it was the human resources signification investment to (4) ensuring the requisite skills and (5) supporting a sense of community that made a significant impact for collaborative teams (2007). When HR departments intentionally made sure teams had specific relational skills necessary for working with others it displayed in team performance. HR should invest in teaching employees “appreciating others, being able to engage in purposeful conversation, productively and creatively resolving conflicts and program management” (Gratton and Erickson, 2007, p. 66). Their studies also showed “While a communal spirit can develop spontaneously, we discovered that HR can also play a critical role in cultivating it, by sponsoring group events and activities” (Gratton and Erickson, 2007, p. 68). By investing in relational skills and providing informal opportunities for employees to gather together, a leader can encourage better cooperation and collaboration.

Strength of the Team Leader

It is very important for the collaboration of a team to have the correct leader. Gratton and Erickson speak to the importance of ‘flexibility’ as a quality of managers (2007). This means that organizations need to (6) assign leaders who are both task- and relationship-oriented. “They make the goal clear, engaged in debates about commitments, and clarified the responsibilities of individual team members. However at a certain point in the development of the project they switched to a relationship orientation” (Gratton and Erickson, 2007, p. 70). Leaders that can change their style during a project are more likely to lead a successful collaborative team.

Team Formation and Structure

The complex nature of team-member can stifle the goals a team is working toward, especially when they do not know each other. Gratton and Erickson found that “when 20% to 40% of the team members were already well connected to one another, the team had strong collaboration right from the start” (2007, p. 71). This shows it is important to (7) build on heritage relationships in order to build team collaboration. These heritage relationships have already invested time and effort in building trust with each other. The one pitfall that can move a team away from collaboration with this practice is “if not skillfully managed, too many of them can actually disrupt collaboration. When a significant number of peole with the team know one another, they tend to for strong subgroups” (Gratton and Erickson, 2007, p. 72). This can cause a divisive nature within the team that will work against accomplishing collaboration. A way that teams can limit certain friction within the group setting is for there to be an (8) understanding of role clarity and task ambiguity. Gratton and Erickson state, “Collaboration improves when the roles of individual team members are clearly defined and well understood” (2007, p. 72). When people know, specifically, what they are supposed to be doing and how their role impacts the whole, leaders limit the need for sharing when it isn’t needed. It also empowers those who are highly skilled to work independently on their portion. Given this practice, teams can be successful if they are “composed of specialists who had deep expertise in their given function , and each person had a clearly defined role” (Gratton and Erickson, 2007, p. 73).

If team can practice the eight ways above they will succeed in working together on complex tasks or projects. Gratton and Erickson summarize this article by saying, “Strengthening your organization capacity for collaboration requires a combination of long-term investments – in building relationships and trust, in developing a culture in which senior leaders are role models of cooperation – and smarter near-term decisions about the ways team are formed, roles are defined, and challenges and takes are articulated” (2007, p. 74). Once a company can articulate these practices it will overcome the four traits that are crucial to successful teams but can also undermine them; size, virtual, diversity and expertise. The authors conclude this article well when they state “Companies can assemble the breadth of expertise needed to solve complex business problems – without inducing the destructive behaviors that can accompany it” (Gratton and Erickson, 207, p. 74).

Gary takes the confusing medical gibberish and makes it understandable

This is a tremendous book!

If you're living with diabetes and are not yet familiar with Gary Scheiner, then this book would be a great place to start, because it really does pick up where his other books leave off and offers up-to-date information on a wide variety of important topics. If you're already a fan of his other books, there's plenty of new information in here for you too.

In my opinion, Gary's greatest strength is taking confusing medical information and presenting it in a way that is easy for absolutely anyone to understand. Until There Is a Cure is a perfect example of that. Sections in the book give clear and detailed information about current and emerging medications, as well as technologies that people with diabetes depend on like insulin pumps, glucose monitors, and CGMs. But the book isn't solely focused on technology and gadgets. He also covers recent trends in nutrition, physical activity, emotional considerations, and advancements in fighting complications. Informative, relatable, and so helpful!!

As a recently diagnosed person with diabetes, I felt so stressed and overwhelmed and had absolutely no idea where to begin. A friend of mine recommended that I read some of Gary Scheiner's books, so I bought Until There Is a Cure and got started.

I had spoken to doctors, and spent hours on the Internet, but no resource I found or person I talked to was more understanding or approachable than Gary, and I've never even met him!

He really lays everything out - he doesn't just talk about medicine and technology, but also other factors that affect people with diabetes, like exercise, stress, and other health complications. He even includes resources, like iPhone apps and blogs, that can help people with diabetes manage their diabetes. And he does it all in a way that doesn't make me feel confused.

I absolutely loved Gary's tone. He's professional and knowledgeable, but I also felt like he really got where I was coming from. He said something that perfectly sums up how difficult it is to control my diabetes: "Think again about that teaspoon of glucose. Imagine yourself walking on a tightrope with that teaspoon balanced on the tip of your nose. Sugar is falling from the sky like rain. One of your arms is exercising feverishly, the other is feeding you carbohydrates. And all the while the audience is testing your balancing skills by throwing stress balls at your head. And all you have to do is keep that teaspoon of sugar from overflowing or spilling out. Every minute. Of every day." He clearly understands the difficulties, but he's not hopeless about the future - in fact, he urges his readers to have a positive attitude, along with keeping themselves educated and using the tools and technologies that are right for them.

He's a realist, for sure, and always gives the benefits and drawbacks to different treatment options. He speaks from his own experiences with having diabetes, and provides so much useful information.

I feel like this book would help people who have been living with diabetes for a while, too - Gary presents a ton of new info. He brings up questions to ask your doctor and provides resources for further research. I look forward to catching up on his other books and will keep my eyes open for the next one!

Straightforward and practical

This guide finds the right tone - not dry like a disinterested reporter, and not overly personal or emotional - to deliver solid information that readers can put to use immediately. Not the author's fault, but it is disheartening to read about multiple new medical devices to help people manage their diabetes that are available in countries outside the U.S.--but not here.

Pretty good although not a must-have for Tokyo

I've been to Tokyo more than a dozen times, typically for a week at a time. Every trip I get another guidebook or two just to learn something new and get new ideas; "29 Walks" is the latest.

The book does a credible job with its topic, certainly better than many of the "best walks" type guides I've seen from other publishers and cities. It has 29 interesting areas in and around Tokyo and does a nice job of describing them with current and historical detail. The maps are especially good (a difficult thing in Tokyo). Overall the content is very well-selected and suggested a few interesting new routes and destinations to me even after so many trips there. And the pull out map was much better than I expected: instead of just being a cheap afterthought, it is a very nicely-printed and thoughtful map that will serve well to give you an decent medium-scale view of everything inside the central loop (Yamanote line).

Of particular note is that the locations and sights chosen are especially good for getting a sense of Tokyo. If you visit even 1/4 of the areas in the book, you will have a great understanding of the city, certainly much better than that of someone who just sees the neon and western hotels.

Still, there are limitations and you should know what you're getting. First, it is nothing more than a guide to the walks. In particular, there is nothing to help you with restaurants, lodging, etc. That's not a big problem, but means that it is not a complete guidebook. Second, the walks are all extremely urban with minor exceptions (e.g., Kamakura). It is not a guide to hiking or nature walks. Again, not a problem but an observation. Tokyo is perhaps the world's most vibrant and exciting city, and this guide is all about the *city* (plus a few day trips).

Third, the book is nicely printed on thick paper with color photos and maps. Unfortunately that brings up the one serious problem: it is surprisingly heavy! When I took it out of the Amazon box my first thought was, "Oh, no, that's WAY too heavy to take along!" I'm still undecided about that, because I only travel with carry ons, and this book would take up the weight of a typical 2-4 other books (such as novels or lightweight travel guides).

As for other books I'd recommend for Tokyo: my personal favorite single guidebook is The Rough Guide to Tokyo. If you will be walking and want to find your way, especially to addresses in Japan, then Tokyo City Atlas: A Bilingual Guide is an absolute necessity. Don't even bother with any of the printed-on-plastic maps, as they are too small to be useful for walking in Tokyo. Get the Atlas and find a way to carry it around (it will fit in a purse or backpack, but not a regular jeans pocket).

Overall I'm satisfied with 29 Walks and would recommend it as the 3rd or 4th book for Tokyo, not first or second, and especially for those who are inveterate city walkers, who love armchair travel, who have been to Tokyo a few times already, or will be there longer than a week and don't mind its weight. A great guide!

I lived in Tokyo in college and have led tours there several times. This book provides such a comprehensive explanation of the sites and history of this fabulous city - almost step by step! It is a treasure - especially for those who are new to Tokyo or do not have capacity with the language. I am especially pleased that it explores the modern jewels of the city as well as it's ancient ones. The walking maps are clear and logical; well labeled in English. If you are headed to Tokyo, buy this book and go explore! You will discover why some of us go back time and time again!

Not a friendly book

We are preparing a 5-day Tokyo trip, but find this book does little help for the planning. One of the reasons could be Tokyo is a big city with many varieties. However, this book seems written in a way for the people who live in Tokyo and want to know Tokyo better instead for the people who travel to Tokyo for the first time. Another example is how to get to Tokyo from airport. Two most popular airports are Narita and Haneda airport. This book just covers the Narita, not Haneda. The author should refer those good selling (walking) tour books and revise it to be more friendly for the readers.

I'm quite satisfied for this story to end where it does

Is it wrong to con a conman? This story tells the beginning of Oz's reign in the fairy lands, focusing on his strike against the witchly women in power, and the witch of the East in particular. Be prepared for him to grate on your every nerve, but also await a rather satisfying end to his aspirations.

I'm quite satisfied for this story to end where it does. It makes the rest of the Oz series seem like so much propaganda, but knowing how it actually ends for the witches makes this story a little painful.

I guess I was looking for a more pure juicing book. This book has a section on meals and salads. The juices include using protein powders and vitamin extracts. The title is confusing. I don't get it. Good luck. (I think the Juicing Bible, and Jay Kordich are better options.)

You have to add supplements to the drinks

I love to juice and the recipes in the book are OK. The problem is that almost all of them call for some sort of vitamin, enzyme etc. to be added. For example, a recipe that is supposed to be good for eyes has you add vitamin A.

"It was like ******* VAUDEVILLE in there!"

This novel is a combination of two things I've heard of but never read, and one I have heard of and also read. Specifically: Doctor/Nurse romances (never read), Jane Eyre (never read); and a thriller (have read). So I can't really tell you how good a job it does at riffing off Jane Eyre and Doctor/Nurse romances, but I can tell you that the thriller aspect was handled in an hilarious, uniquely Ellmann manner.

We are in a rural backwater, we are doing it vaudeville style. Two murderers; one slim, one obese. Doctor, nurse. Cleft chin and dimpled butt. Dead bodies everywhere.

I still think that the best thing Ellmann has going for her is her unique way of looking at the world, and she'd be better off writing essays instead of novels.Or at least to write essays in addition to novels, because I really do believe a book of her essays would be the best thing ever. Ellmann, however, doesn't agree, as she explicitly states in the book that people have told her to write non-fiction and those people can (basically) kiss her behind. Too bad-- these people know what they're talking about! I've rarely been so intrigued by someone's opinions/way of thinking, and I don't think I'd be alone in that. Still, this book is a treasure trove of odd theories, observations and truths, and I'll take 'em where I can get 'em, even if the rest besides, while better than average, is not as compelling.

Another Crazyass novel by the wickedly funny Lucy Ellmann

Wow...Lucy Ellmann is not for everyone, and I actually thought Dot in the Universe is a better book, but I still heartily recommend Doctors and Nurses. That said, this book is not for everyone. Ellman's over the top style and in your face grossness may freak out the weak of heart, but if you like very dark, biting humor this books is for you!

Memories of Bali forever.

On a cruise to Bali this book was in the ship's library and I feel in love with it. As soon as I got home I ordered it on AMAZON. I now have an wonderful book of memories of my time in this paradise. The photos are so good you can almost hear the Balinese music and smell the incense in the temples and markets.
