Simply the BEST!
By A reader
As an arm-chair traveler, I only buy travel books for their pictures -- I've looked at 5 other picture books on Malaysia and for me this is by far the best -- their are lots of large pictures of the tropical forests, beaches, cities and people and the photography is simply outstanding.

I really don't know what the other reviewer is complaining about.

WASTE OF MONEY. DON'T BUY. VERY POOR QUALITY
By Osorio D. S. Anna
The cover page of the book has a great picture of the most known scene of Kuala Lumpur, the Petronas building, but that is all. The content of the book is just horrible. Very few information about the country and its places, very few pictures and with very poor quality. I bought the book to have an overall idea of the country and start planning a trip to Malaysia, but the book is absolutely useless. Not even as a coffee table book. Don't buy. Don't waste your money.

Minor Episodes / Major Ruckus (The Chaos! Quincunx), by Garry Thomas Morse

In tribute to the surrealist narrative techniques of André Breton and Robert Desnos, Minor Episodes documents the serial adventures of Minor, the ubiquitous "everymogul" who embodies the economic one percent and keeps musically erotic quixotics on tap. Having entered a "rent in time" that gives each chapter an alternate reality, Minor swaggers through an undersea casino, in-flight blockbuster, bawdy Western, and Kafkaesque job hunt, cavorting with billboard queen Bébé Lala and country-music legend Faith Faith, when not dressing down his shifty sidekick, The Concierge, or haunting the intensely disinterested songstress Miss Sharp. However, danger looms in the form of The Stropper, a serial killer fresh out of a shaving promotion, and an enigmatic ginger-beer icon who has retired from a satisfying life of culinary assassinations.

Major Ruckus, a contrapuntal text and parody of the speculative fiction genre, celebrates the stylistic techniques of William S. Burroughs and Robert Anton Wilson, following a frenzied struggle by various parties to obtain an essential time-travel component, a struggle that includes psychic "dicks," universal call-center operators, aboriginal eroticists, lubricant heiresses, rogue advertisement animations, pornography censors, and alien sperm-bank clones, all to the horrified fascination of hapless meta-writer Oober Mann. But ultimately it is Carl Sagan who creates the most confusion, when his prudish doodle of a woman is sent into space aboard the Voyager probe, triggering a plan to "assist" Earth's declining population through extraterrestrials in the guise of census takers.

Minor Episodes and Major Ruckus introduce The Chaos! Quincunx series.

Review
"Here are Bébé Cadum with his enormous smiling visage and Corsair Sanglot in their returning personages Bébé Lala and Signor Minor cavorting over the baroquely surrealist pages of these major Minor Episodes ... our beloved Robert Desnos would have chortled in delight: so do we."
-- Mary Ann Caws, author of The Surrealist Look: An Erotics of Encounter

"Minor Episodes / Major Ruckus is a wonder. Garry Thomas Morse most certainly has Salvador Dalí, Miguel de Cervantes, André Breton, and that rude rocker Gargantua, courtesy of Rabelais, in his corner. His novel, with its themes of sex, money, and intrigue, and with its over-current of hilarity running amok, explodes from the page. To say this novel is on steroids is to downplay things. A careening, giddy ride is ahead, a mad word-dash to realities you've never even dreamed of. Transportation guaranteed!"
-- M.A.C. Farrant, creator of My Turquoise Years

"Like a beguiling house of mirrors, Minor Episodes bends, twists, fractures and deforms reality through phantasmagoric visions, orgiastic inventions and a mischievous use of language. Don't be deceived by its title: there is nothing minor about this major accomplishment."

-- Martine Desjardins, author of Maleficium

Very Unique
By John L. Leland
It is a pity grammarians say nothing can be very unique, because this is a very unique book --actually two groups of loosely linked episodes, whose plotlines only gradually (and incompletely) become visible. The first series (Minor Episodes) involves a corrupt fabulously wealthy entrepreneur named Minor and his assorted exploitational exploits; the second, though its characters include a roughhewn hero type named Ruckus, pays much less attention to him; its primary plotline resembles The Carefully Considered Rape of the World in that an alien life form is going around having sex with just about every earthling (or technically Duckling) female it can find, though thanks to the availability of abortion most do not actually reproduce.
However, the plotlines are secondary to wildly inventive language and a great deal of ribald humor. It is a little as if Stand on Zanzibar had been rewritten in the style of Finnegan's Wake.

Surrealism At Its Most Surreal
By Vicki
Surrealism is an acceptable reaction to a surreal world in which each of us acts not in his interest every single day. It's not as good a reaction as rage, but it's more than adequate, and some rage does poke through the surr. here. But more humour: I lolled or lqarled* like double digits of times reading this, which isn't an experience I usually have with guys that think they're funny. And it helps you deal with the fact that each episode ends inconclusively, a draw match conducted for obscure purposes between shifting identities moving in mysterious ways.

Although text is quite dense and the imagery thick, the author is humorous and often very inventive; if you enjoy surrealist literature, have at this one.

Etty Hillesum: A Life Transformed, by Patrick Woodhouse

On 8 March 1941, a 27-year-old Jewish Dutch student living in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam made the first entry in a diary that was to become one of the most remarkable documents to emerge from the Nazi Holocaust. Over the course of the next two and a half years, an insecure, chaotic and troubled young woman was transformed into someone who inspired those with whom she shared the suffering of the transit camp at Westerbork and with whom she eventually perished at Auschwitz. Through her diary and letters, she continues to inspire those whose lives she has touched since. She was an extraordinarily alive and vivid young woman who shaped and lived a spirituality of hope in the darkest period of the twentieth century. This book explores Etty Hillesum's life and writings, seeking to understand what it was about her that was so remarkable, how her journey developed, how her spirituality was shaped, and what her profound reflections on the roots of violence and the nature of evil can teach us today.

a good introduction for those new to Etty Hillesum's work
By Julie Balamut
The selection of Etty Hillesum's journal, "Interrupted Life," is an adopted text for many undergraduate literature and religion courses. Those new to Hillesum have difficulty getting past her sexual proclivities and her somewhat bizarre behavior in regard to her mentor, Spier. Unfortunately, this prevents many from really finding the beauty and brilliance of this remarkable woman and her transformation from a confused girl to a deeply spiritual, compassionate woman. This book is an excellent bridge that allows the new reader to move on from Etty's early chaotic life to her profoundly moving transformation. Written in clear easy-to-follow prose, Woodhouse's book gives us the background to her life and the conditions in which she lived. He offers excellent examples of her best writing and takes us step-by-step through her spiritual transformation in a respectful and lovely way. Even though I have studied Etty Hillesum's work extensively and have read other academic books and articles about her work, I really enjoyed the way Woodhouse enhanced her experience and our experience with Etty with such careful detail. For those who teach Etty's work, I would suggest Woodhouse's book as good background to what life was like in pre-Nazi Amsterdam where this remarkable woman wrote one of the best journals of spiritual transformation ever.

Unconditional Love and Forgiving
By Brenda Van Scoy
There are no spiritual buzz words in Etty's writing. She probably didn't even consider herself a teacher. She "merely" lived joy, unconditional love, and forgivness in the midst of horror and despair.

It is a true life transformer
By A Kindle Fan
Her attitude and severe practice in maintining within her the values to which she profoundly believed, brought her to a higher spiritual level not withstanding the undescribable horror of the situation. It is an elogy to human capacities

'The waiting room is packed and you've had five requests for home visits.' Flora handed Logan a prescription to sign, thinking that he looked more tired than ever. 'Given that they were all mobile and none of their complaints sounded life-threatening, Janet's managed to persuade them all to come to the surgery because it just isn't practical for you to go dashing around the island at the moment when you're running this practice on your own. What happens if we have a genuine emergency? You can't be in five places at once. We can't carry on like this, Logan. You can't carry on like this. You're going to drop.'

Logan looked at the prescription. 'Gentacin ear drops?'

'Pam King has an infection. She has her ears syringed regularly, but this time the whole of the canal is looking inflamed. There didn't seem any point in adding her to your already buckling list. I've taken off half your patients and if I can sort them out, I will. Otherwise I'll have to push them back through to you.'

'You, Flora Harris, are a miracle.' Logan signed the prescription. 'And persuading you to come back here as my practice nurse was the best thing I ever did. When Kyla and Ethan left, I couldn't imagine how we were going to cope. I lost nurse and doctor in one fell swoop.'

'Well, I've only solved one half of your problem. You still need to find a doctor to replace Ethan. Any progress?'

'I think so.'

'Seriously?' Flora picked the prescription up from his desk. 'You've found someone?'

'Ask me again at lunchtime. I'm expecting someone on the morning ferry.'

'Oh, that's fantastic.'Relieved, Flora relaxed slightly. 'Is he or she good? Well qualified?'

'It's a he.' Logan turned back to his computer. 'And, yes, he's extremely well qualified.'

Flora stared at him expectantly. 'And…?'

'And what?'

'Aren't you going to tell me any more?'

'No.'He tapped a few keys and frowned at the screen. 'How are you finding Glenmore, Flora? I haven't really had a chance to ask you and you've already been here for a month. Everything going all right? Have you settled into Evanna's cottage?'

'Yes, thank you.' Hadn't they been discussing the new doctor? Why were they suddenly on the subject of her cottage? Why was he changing the subject? 'Evanna's cottage is beautiful. I love it.' It was true. She'd never imagined she'd live anywhere so pretty. 'You can see the sea from the bed…' she blushed '…but, of course, you already know that, given that the two of you are married. I'm sure you spent plenty of time in her cottage.'

'Actually, we didn't.' Logan glanced at her, amused. 'We usually stayed at mine because there was more room. Are you finding the work very different from the practice in Edinburgh?'

'Not really, but everything takes four times as long because this is Glenmore and people like to chat.'Flora gave a helpless shrug. 'I always seem to be running late.'

'You need to cut them off when they gossip.' Logan turned his attention back to the computer screen, searching for something. 'That's what the rest of us do.'

'I haven't worked out how to do that without appearing rude. I don't want to offend them. They're all so nice and they mean well.' Flora picked up the prescription and moved towards the door. 'Anyway, I'd better let you carry on. At this rate you'll still be here at midnight. And so will I.'

As she left the room and returned to her own consulting room she suddenly remembered that Logan hadn't given her any more clues as to the identity of the new doctor. On an island where no one kept a secret, Logan appeared to have one. Why? What possible reason could he have for being so cloak and dagger about the whole thing?

Who exactly had he appointed?

Conner parked the motorbike and dragged the helmet from his head. The rain had stopped and the sun fought a battle with the clouds, as if to remind him that the weather on Glenmore Island was as unpredictable as ever.

It was July and still the wind blew.

That same wind had almost landed him in jail at the age of sixteen.

Tucking his helmet under his arm, he strolled into the surgery. Nice job, Logan, he thought to himself as he took in his surroundings in one casual glance. Sleek, clean lines and plenty of light. Despite the early hour, the waiting room was already crowded with patients and he saw heads turn and eyes widen as he passed.

Without adjusting his pace, he ignored the reception desk and made for the first consulting room. As he approached the door a patient walked out, clutching a prescription in her hand. She took one look at him and stopped dead, her open mouth reminding him of a baby bird waiting to be fed.

'Conner MacNeil.' Her voice trailed off in a strangled squeak and he lifted an eyebrow, a sardonic expression in his eyes as he observed her mounting discomfort.

If he'd been in any doubt as to the islanders' reaction to his return, that doubt had now gone.

'Mrs Graham.' He was cool and polite, his neutral tone a direct contrast to her shock and consternation. He moved past her, knowing that he should cut short the encounter, but he couldn't quite help himself and he turned, the devil dancing in his eyes. 'I hope your beautiful garden is thriving. If I remember correctly, it's always at its best in July.'

Her soft gasp of outrage made it obvious that her memories of their last meeting were as clear as his and a smile played around his hard mouth as he walked into the consulting room without bothering to knock.

Mrs Graham's garden.

He still remembered the girl…

He pushed the door shut with the flat of his hand and the man at the desk looked up.

'Conner.' Logan rose to his feet, welcome in his eyes as he stretched out his hand. 'It's been too long.'

'Not long enough for some,'Conner murmured, thinking of Mrs Graham who, he was sure, at that precise moment was still glaring angrily at the closed door. 'Prepare yourself for a riot. The locals will be arming themselves any minute now.' He shook the hand of the man who had been part of his boyhood.

'Kate Graham recognised you, then? I seem to recall that you were stark naked the last time she saw you.'

The devil was back in Conner's eyes. 'Mrs Graham had extremely tall delphiniums in her border,' he recalled. 'She only saw my face.'

Logan laughed out loud. 'You have no idea how pleased I am to see you. You're looking good, Conner.'

'I wish I could return the compliment.'Conner's dark brows drew together in a frown as he studied his cousin, taking in the faint shadows and the lines of strain. 'You've looked better.

Island life obviously doesn't suit you. You need to leave this backwater and find yourself a proper job.' But his tone was light because he knew that the medical care that his cousin delivered on this remote Scottish island was of exceptional quality.

'There's nothing wrong with island life, just the lack of medical staff. To run this place effectively we need two doctors and two nurses.' Logan rubbed his fingers over his forehead. 'It's been tough since Kyla and Ethan left. I lost a doctor and a nurse in one blow.'

Conner thought about his cousin. 'I never thought Kyla would leave this place.'

'She married an Englishman with itchy feet.'

'There's treatment for that.'

'Yeah.' Logan grinned. 'Anyway, it's only temporary and

I've replaced Kyla. Now you're here, so we're back on track.'

'If I were you, I'd postpone the celebrations until the whole island gets wind of your little plan. The jungle drums will start beating soon.'

'They're already beating.' Logan picked up his coffee-mug and then realised that it was empty and put it down again. 'My phone has been ringing and you've only been on the island for twenty minutes. You certainly know how to make a lasting impression, Conner MacNeil. What exactly did you do on that ferry?'

'Travelled on it. Apparently that was more than enough.' Conner stretched his legs out in front of him and put his helmet down on the floor. 'There's going to be a rebellion. If looks could kill, I'd be in your mortuary right now, not your consulting room. The natives will probably return to their roots and take up arms to defend themselves from the unwelcome invader. They're preparing themselves for rape and pillage.'

'Ignore them. You know what the islanders are like.' Logan reached for a pack of papers. 'They don't like change. Can you read this lot quickly and sign? Just a formality.'

'And you know how much I love formality,' Connor drawled softly, but he leaned forward to take the papers, grimacing when he saw the thickness of the documentation. 'Life's too short to wade through that much bureaucracy. What does it say? Conner MacNeil must not steal, destroy property or otherwise harass the citizens of Glenmore?'

'All that and the fact that all single women under the age of thirty are now considered to be in danger.' Logan's eyes gleamed as he handed his cousin a pen. 'The men of the island are locking up their wives and daughters as we speak and Mrs Graham is probably shovelling fertiliser on her delphiniums to increase their height and preserve her modesty and yours. Sign the back page.'

'Single women under the age of thirty? Why thirty? That doesn't give me nearly enough scope. I've always preferred experience to innocence.' Conner flipped straight to the back of the sheaf of papers and signed with a casual flourish.

Logan lifted an eyebrow. 'Aren't you going to bother to read what you just signed?'

'I'm presuming it's a load of rules and regulations.'

'And knowing that, you're prepared to sign? I thought you hated rules and regulations.'

'I do, but I trust you and I admire what you've built here on Glenmore.' Conner handed the papers back to Logan, a faint smile on his mouth. 'I promise to do my best for your patients. I'm not promising that I won't bend the rules a little if it proves to be necessary.'

Logan reached for an envelope. 'I bend them all the time. It's the only way to get things done. It's good to have you here, Conner.'

'I don't think everyone is going to agree with you. Judging from the shock on the faces I've seen so far, you didn't warn them in advance.'

'Do I look stupid?' Logan slipped the papers into the envelope and dropped it into the tray on his desk. 'I was waiting until you showed up.'

'Did you think I wouldn't?'

'Reliability isn't your middle name. I wasn't sure you'd actually do this when the time came.'

Connor gave a humourless laugh. 'Then that makes two of us.'

'But you did, so now I can break the happy news to the inhabitants of Glenmore. How have you been? Tell me, honestly.' Logan hesitated. 'It must have been hard…'

'Coming back? Why would you say that?' Conner was surprised to find that his voice sounded so harsh. 'You know how much I love this place.'

Ignoring the sarcasm, Logan watched him steadily. 'Actually, I was talking about leaving the army.'

The army?

Conner realised that since he'd stepped off the ferry, he'd given no thought to the life he'd just left. All he could think about was Glenmore and how it felt to be back. The bad memories poured into him like some dark, insidious disease, gradually taking possession of his mind. 'Leaving the army isn't my problem at the moment.' he growled. 'And, anyway, I don't believe in living in the past when there's a perfectly good future to be getting on with.'

'Are you going to sell the house?'

'You get straight to the point, don't you?' Conner rose to his feet and paced across the room, keeping his back to his cousin as he rode the pain. 'Yes.' He turned, his eyes fierce. 'Why would I keep it?'

'So that you have a place on Glenmore?'

'If I'd wanted that,' Conner said softly, 'why would I be renting your barn?'

'Good point.' Logan gave him a sympathetic look. 'This must be hard for you, I know.'

'Nowhere near as hard as it's going to be for the locals.' Conner studied a picture on the wall. 'They're going to think that you've lost your mind, appointing me as the locum.'

'They'd be less shocked if you told them the truth about what you've been doing since you stormed off Glenmore all those years ago.'

'Island gossip has never interested me.'

'You sound like Flora. Her clinics are taking twice as long as they should because she doesn't like to interrupt people when they're chatting.'

'Flora?'

'My practice nurse. She replaced Kyla.'

'Flora Harris?' Conner turned, the pain inside him under control. 'Daughter of Ian Harris, our island solicitor? Niece of our esteemed headmistresses?'

Cloudy dark hair, soft brown eyes, an impossibly shy and awkward teenager, and as innocent as the dawn…

Logan's eyes narrowed. 'You didn't ever…'

'Fortunately for her, there were enough wild teenage girls on the island who were more than happy to experiment, without me having to corrupt the saintly Flora. Anyway, she didn't take her nose out of a book for long enough to discover the existence of sex.'

'She isn't saintly. Just shy.'

'Maybe. But definitely not the sort of girl who would skip classes in favour of a practical session on human reproduction.' Conner rolled his shoulders to ease the tension. 'I'm not surprised she's a nurse. It would have been that or a librarian. Does she know I'm the new doctor?'

'Not yet.'

'She won't approve.'

'Even if she doesn't, she would never say so. Flora is sweet, kind and incredibly civilised.'

'Whereas I'm sharp, unkind and incredibly uncivilised. I'm willing to bet that the first thing she does, when she finds out about me, is remind you that I blew up the science lab.'

'I'd forgotten about that.' Momentarily distracted, Logan narrowed his eyes. 'What did you use—potassium?'

'Too dangerous. They didn't keep it at school.' Restless, Conner paced across the room again and scanned the row of textbooks on the shelf. 'But they did keep sodium. That was good enough.'

'It should have been in a locked cupboard.'

'It was.'

Logan laughed. 'I'm amazed you weren't expelled.'

'Me, too. Very frustrating, given how hard I applied myself to the task.' Conner suppressed a yawn. 'So I'm going to be working with Flora. The excitement of this place increases by the minute.'

'She's a brilliant nurse. She was working in Edinburgh until last month but we persuaded her to come back. And now you've joined us. I've been thinking—we should tell the islanders what you've been doing with your life.'

'It's none of their business.'

Logan sighed. 'I don't see why you're so reluctant to let people know that you're a good guy.'

'Who says I'm a good guy? If you wanted a good guy for the job then you've appointed the wrong man.' Conner turned, a ghost of a smile on his face.

A waste of time
By Kate Zander
This book was quite possibly one of the worst I have ever read. I only finished it because I was stuck on a long train trip and had nothing else to do. The characters are completely unbelievable. What kind of author has a nurse as their main character who gets sick at the sight of blood and doesn't know basic CPR? It's insulting to nurses worldwide. And to have the main hero as a surgeon (with exeprience in the army) aged 30? As if!
When are authors going to realise that just because their main hero is a typical alpha male the female character doesn't have to be a simpering submissive little mouse with no back bone.
Thank goodness it was one I picked up at a library, I would hate to think people fork out their hard earned money to read this rubbish.

What's Mine's Mine, by George MacDonald

HOW COME THEY THERE? The room was handsomely furnished, but such as I would quarrel with none for calling common, for it certainly was uninteresting. Not a thing in it had to do with genuine individual choice, but merely with the fashion and custom of the class to which its occupiers belonged. It was a dining-room, of good size, appointed with all the things a dining-room "ought" to have, mostly new, and entirely expensive—mirrored sideboard in oak; heavy chairs, just the dozen, in fawn-coloured morocco seats and backs—the dining-room, in short, of a London-house inhabited by rich middle-class people. A big fire blazed in the low round-backed grate, whose flashes were reflected in the steel fender and the ugly fire-irons that were never used. A snowy cloth of linen, finer than ordinary, for there was pride in the housekeeping, covered the large dining-table, and a company, evidently a family, was eating its breakfast. But how come these people THERE? For, supposing my reader one of the company, let him rise from the well-appointed table—its silver, bright as the complex motions of butler's elbows can make it; its china, ornate though not elegant; its ham, huge, and neither too fat nor too lean; its game-pie, with nothing to be desired in composition, or in flavour natural or artificial;—let him rise from these and go to the left of the two windows, for there are two opposite each other, the room having been enlarged by being built out: if he be such a one as I would have for a reader, might I choose—a reader whose heart, not merely his eye, mirrors what he sees—one who not merely beholds the outward shows of things, but catches a glimpse of the soul that looks out of them, whose garment and revelation they are;—if he be such, I say, he will stand, for more than a moment, speechless with something akin to that which made the morning stars sing together. He finds himself gazing far over western seas, while yet the sun is in the east. They lie clear and cold, pale and cold, broken with islands scattering thinner to the horizon, which is jagged here and there with yet another. The ocean looks a wild, yet peaceful mingling of lake and land. Some of the islands are green from shore to shore, of low yet broken surface; others are mere rocks, with a bold front to the sea, one or two of them strange both in form and character. Over the pale blue sea hangs the pale blue sky, flecked with a few cold white clouds that look as if they disowned the earth they had got so high—though none the less her children, and doomed to descend again to her bosom. A keen little wind is out, crisping the surface of the sea in patches—a pretty large crisping to be seen from that height, for the window looks over hill above hill to the sea. Life, quiet yet eager, is all about; the solitude itself is alive, content to be a solitude because it is alive. Its life needs nothing from beyond—is independent even of the few sails of fishing boats that here and there with their red brown break the blue of the water

He who would savor Heaven must first taste Hell.
By A Customer
Alister, who had inherited but the little that remained of the land which had begrudging provided his once-mighty and still-proud clan a meager subsistence-the land known as Strathruadh-, was finding it increasingly difficult to care for his beloved people. The very land on which the village stood was now the property of a lowlander-a man who cared for neither the land nor the people, but whose sole interest lay in his investment, prestige, and prominence. The small portion of land remaining to Alister was his to farm, to nurture, to love. Oh, how he loved this hard, barren, hilly, heather-covered, wasteland. But God loved Alister far more than Alister could love the land, and, as a result, a sacrifice must be made. Alister must be made to choose between the seen and unseen; must be made to understand that ownership is not to own. God created and retains ownership of all things. We are given but a brief stint upon this earth that we may learn that which He would have us learn.
While Alister found the sacrifice far greater than he ever thought he could bear, with the aid of his brother Ian ( a man who, quite possibly, walked midst the Angels), Alister did that which must be done-obey his God, and with obedience came understanding, and with understanding, peace.
Welcome to the world of ancient Scotland, where the people appear as hard as the land upon which they live. Explore their lives, their loves, their dreams, and their hopes. Discover that which we must all eventually learn if we are to ever know true life.

One of MacDonald's best
By Maggie Jarpey
Actually, I might agree with the reviewer who said this is the BEST MacDonald book because I was looking forward to rereading it when enough time had elapsed, and I'm doing that now, and, oh, how I am enjoying it! Not too much dialect to wade through in this one--just enough to give it flavor. And the two main characters are so appealing and interesting that you are happy to be spending time with them in the process of reading about them. Lots of spiritual meat to chew on, and you love the chewing because of the characters and the story, which is unpredictable and completely satisfying. I didn't find a dull passage anywhere. I felt uplifted and wiser and somehow happier when I finished the book the first time. I'm taking my time through this second time so that I can savor it fully.

Beautiful book, some printing poor.
By L. Bouldin
The problem is some of the printing is poor. Some lines words letters did not print completely. In some cases making it hard to understand what is written. For the price it should be perfect.

By Barbara Bell
Being recent transplants to California, my husband and I have been checking out all the nooks and crannies that make California unique. With the printing of this book, we are reminded there is so much more to see and to learn. From Alcatraz to Yosemite, there are adventures abounding. The illustrations for this book are beautiful, and invite you to be a part of goldmining or the California labs of Silicon Valley. Teachers would do well to introduce this book to their students, in and out of California. Parents would allow their children's horizons to be expanded, if only by introducing this book to them. This will be a favorite of mine for years to come.

The Voluntary Environmentalists: Green Clubs, ISO 14001, and Voluntary Environmental Regulations, by Aseem Prakash, Matthew Potoski

Can businesses voluntarily adopt progressive environmental policies? Most environmental regulations are based on the assumption that the pursuit of profit leads firms to pollute the environment, and therefore governments must impose mandatory regulations. However, new instruments such as voluntary programs are increasingly important. Drawing on the economic theory of club goods, this book offers a theoretical account of voluntary environmental programs by identifying the institutional features that influence conditions under which programs can be effective. By linking program efficacy to club design, it focuses attention on collective action challenges faced by green clubs. Several analytic techniques are used to investigate the adoption and efficacy of ISO 14001, the most widely recognized voluntary environmental program in the world. These analyses show that, while the value of ISO 14001's brand reputation varies across policy and economic contexts, on average ISO 14001 members pollute less and comply better with governmental regulations.

Review
"This excellent and well-researched study provides a valuable resource for scholars and practitioners in determining how to adjust our regulatory and other strategies to the demands of a new and more challenging era of environmental problem-solving."
Daniel J. Fiorino, American University

"When do firms choose to follow voluntary environmental standards? Why do they apparently seek less freedom to pollute? Using the theory of green clubs and evidence from ISO 14001, Prakash and Potoski help resolve these policy mysteries. The Voluntary Environmentalists should interest readers concerned with finding innovative ways to improve environmental performance."
James T. Hamilton, Duke University

An academic look at ISO 14001 across national settings
By Stephen Dee
I used this book for some PhD papers in my first year. It's a good academic reference with useful information about ISO 14001 implementations. The information may also be useful to business students interested in environmental issues. Detailed absorption of the material is going to take some statistical knowledge, but the overall message regarding ISO 14001 adoption and benefits are well handled.

The authors did not endeavour to find any cost efficiencies from ISO 14001, so practitioners need not use this text as a reference to support a decision to adopt the standard. Industry advocates interested in learning some lessons from ISO's successful implementation strategy might garner some nuggets by reading between the lines, but Prakash and Potoski did not lay out the text to serve this audience.

Primarily, this text is aimed at academics interested in green environmental issues and sustainability. It is suitable for graduate level work, though some advanced undergraduates may also find it helpful.

Canon Oz (with a caveat)
By J. Bongiorno
Brilliant story, and really the only one in this anthology that's harmonious with the Oz books.

However, it's the Wicked Witch of the East that owns the Silver Shoes, NOT the Wicked Witch of the West. And frankly, I'm surprised by the oversight. The author goes to great lengths with the story's characterizations, plot, mood and themes, and yet, he errs on a rather significant point that's even correct in the MGM film.

So, minus a star for that because it hampers what is otherwise a great story.

Oz Reimagined as a Safe Haven for Abused Girls
By ML
This 23-page short story by Theodora Goss is one of the better pieces included in the Oz Reimagined: New Tales from the Emerald City and Beyond collection. A young female journalist from California goes undercover to investigate an underground railroad that helps girls escape domestic abuse. Regular folks collaborate with characters from the full world of Oz (drawing on the Oz books, not the movie), smuggling them into Oz. There, the girls find not just a safe place, but also a purpose. Written in a lively 1950s/1960s Intrepid Girl Reporter style.

very OZ!
By Elizabeth Watasin
Very much in the spirit of the Baum books, with youthful fervor, optimism, and enthusiasm set to a different purpose--one almost sinister. Great story!
