The Mighty Thor, vol. 2 collects Thor #9-13 and Annual 1999, all originally published in 1999. Like the previous volume, the production quality is good: medium-gloss paper with a solid, flexible binding. There is no bonus content.
Story-wise, Thor, vol. 2 continues Thor's multi-issue battle with the dark gods begun in Thor, Vol. 1. As with the first volume, Dan Jurgens' plot is heavy on action (most of it in a cosmic vein) but light on human drama and Norse mythology. Each issue save the Annual involves some kind of spectacular battle, usually with a God or God-like being--including, at one point, Zeus and his Greek brethren. What little additional plot there is depends heavily on back story from Thor, Vol. 1; readers unfamiliar with that volume may thus have some difficulty fully following the events of this one. The Annual, on the other hand, features a brief and largely self-contained story accounting for Thor's delayed return to the Marvel Universe after Heroes Reborn: The Return. Though these are not terrible stories, they suffer a sometimes unbearable script that assigns stilted and overly archaic speech to Thor and his fellow Asgardians. Though Thor's speech has always been "ancient-sounding," Jurgens takes it to ridiculous levels here. Nearly every issue, for instance, includes multiple exclamations of "I Say Thee, Nay!" As for the art, John Romita Jr.'s pencils are excellent and his layouts often gorgeous.
If you enjoyed Volume 1 of Jurgens and Romita Jr.'s run, you'll enjoy this one as well. Otherwise, this is probably a book worth skipping, especially given how many other excellent Thor graphic novels are in print.
