Gr 6-9–At 5 feet, 5 inches and almost 200 pounds by the time he turns 15, Jimmy Winterpock suffers every kind of indignity imaginable from classmates who think of him as less than a person. Jimmy's adolescent point of view, delivered in journal form, is most authentic when describing life's lows (his tormentors) and highs (the support he gets from his family and youth group). However, between those accounts are cracks in the teen voice and message-driven statements such as, “I looked up causes of obesity online, and one site talked about hydrogenated oils and trans fat, and how they weren't in foods until the 70s. Now they're in almost everything we eat, and that's why there's so much obesity.” Additionally distracting are the side plots in which Jimmy's only friend, verbally abused when not being neglected, becomes obsessed with a local murder and Jimmy's crush turns out to be a cutter. These serious psychological problems detract from the dramatic changes the teen decides to make in his own life, reducing him to a tragedy magnet instead of allowing his story to soar.–Joanna K. As efforts to combat childhood obesity continue to make headlines, Lang and Buchanan delve into their experiences as teachers to tell the story of Jimmy, a “not-so-slim” high-school freshman. In his English-class journal, Jimmy records his efforts to make friends and escape bullying over the course of his first year in a new town. Although some of his old and new friends face more dramatic problems, such as abusive parents, Jimmy’s day-to-day struggles are compelling. A self-acknowledged “good kid” who loves video games and finds inspiration at church youth group, Jimmy has a refreshingly down-to-earth point of view. His honest, likable voice makes his effort to lose weight, his faith, and his growing social confidence believable. Throughout, Lang and Buchanan manage to work in words of wisdom about healthy eating and exercise. What's it like to be an overweight teen?

Lang Buchanan's novel about the angst of being an overweight teen is explored against the backdrop of a thrilling murder mystery. His struggle to overcome one of the most public of handicaps - if you're fat, everybody sees it immediately - at a psychologically crucial age is treated with sensitivity and respect. I recommend this to all teens and their parents - both thin kids and heavy - for its insight into the pain caused by this condition and the social isolation that it brings.
The foreword is written by a prominent specialist in this disorder, lending weight to the message of the book.

but you’re really creating a recipe for disaster when you add in other risks like abusive parents

Jimmy Winterpock always gets teased by the football team for being fat. He’s not just a little overweight, mind you, but just plain fat. Thanks to a writing journal kept for his English class, we get to follow along over the course of the school year as Jimmy works to slim down with healthy lifestyle changes. Jimmy is thrilled to see the changes in his body, and along the way he discovers that nearly all of his school friends have some kind of personal problems as well.
Even though this book seems to be focused on Jimmy’s personal struggle with obesity, I found myself even more sympathetic to the other kids at his school. Adolescence is hard enough by itself, but you’re really creating a recipe for disaster when you add in other risks like abusive parents, depression or learning disabilities. Although this book is clearly categorized as “young adult” due to its mature themes, I’d actually recommend it for parents as well. Jimmy’s journal provides a window into the mind of a teenager, and the issues they could be silently struggling with.

Wonderfully inspirational story!!

I recently finished this book and to say the very least it is a page turner. What an inspiring story for people of all walks of life. This book will hopefully be the spark for human compassion and equality that this world needs. In a time of constant conflict and negativity, "The Fat Boy Chronicles" inspires us to be better people and to always look for the good in people regardless of their size, shape, or color. Read this book you will be left with joy in your heart and you will be ready to spread peace and love!
