When L. Frank Baum introduced Dorothy and friends to the American public in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz became an instant, bestselling hit. Today the whimsical tale remains a cultural phenomenon that continues to spawn wildly popular books, movies, and musicals. Now, editors John Joseph Adams and Douglas Cohen have brought together some of the leading fantasy, science fiction, and young adult writers to create the ultimate anthology for Oz fan – and, really, any reader with an appetite for richly imagined worlds.

In "Emeralds to Emeralds, Dust to Dust," by Seanan McGuire, Dorothy Gale is grown up, bitter, and still living in Oz. And now she has a murder to solve--assuming Ozma will stop interfering with her life long enough to let her do her job.

Some stories are dystopian…Some are dreamlike…All are undeniably Oz.

So-so short story from "Oz Reimagined" collection
By ML
"Emeralds to Emeralds, Dust to Dust" by Seanan McGuire is a longish short-story (27 pages) that was originally published in the collection "Oz Reimagined: New Tales from the Emerald City and Beyond." This Kindle edition includes the story along with John Joseph Adams and Douglas Cohen's introduction to the book.

In a nutshell, the story concerns the apparent murder of a Quadling man in the dirty and desperate underbelly of the Emerald City. A malicious Empress Ozma orders Dorothy to investigate. Dorothy agrees under duress; the Empress says that Dorothy will not be able to see her lover until she finds the culprit and brings him/her to justice. Using her knowledge of the city and her ties to important Oz figures, Dorothy doggedly pursues leads through the Emerald City's seediest -- and loftiest -- precincts, revealing, in true hard-boiled detective fashion, the decadence and corruption that lies at the city's core.

"Friends of Dorothy" will no doubt like the fact that this Dorothy is openly gay. The bitterness between Dorothy and Ozma stems from a bad breakup between the pair, and Dorothy's current lover is Polychrome, the daughter of the Rainbow. (I should note that things are a bit ambiguous with regard to Ozma; she's actually sort of a trans-woman. Ozma was born female but was transformed into a boy while still an infant by Mombi at the behest of the wizard. Glinda reversed the spell when Ozma was about 14. See "The Marvelous Land of Oz")

Fans of Baum's entire body of Oz books may also like the story; it draws on characters and events from the books that go well beyond what's seen in the 1939 movie. I like the way she works these elements into her story. On the other hand, such fans may recoil at the violence McGuire does to their childhood fantasies. McGuire's Dorothy is a miserable, self-hating wretch, and her ugly Emerald City, overrun by hordes of desperate refugees from the "real world," is sinking into crime and squalor.

I have three big beefs with the story. First, Dorothy sounds exactly like October Daye (from, e.g., "Rosemary and Rue: An October Daye Novel"). McGuire appears to be the authorial equivalent of a one-note actor like Woody Allen: no matter what character she's channeling, her voice remains the same. Second, the murder itself is really of no interest. The victim isn't particularly important, and when you learn the details, you're more likely to greet them with a shrug than an "ah ha!" Third, the story builds up considerable momentum only to run into a brick wall. The end comes on so suddenly, the reader has to wonder "Is there more? Is there going to be more?" I doubt that McGuire intends to turn this story into a novel or a longer novella, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility.

Bottom line: If you really, truly must read everything Seanan McGuire writes -- or if you have an Amazon Prime membership and can read this for free on your Kindle -- go for it. If you're not a big McGuire fan but revisionist Oz stories appeal to you, get the whole book. Otherwise, you can survive perfectly well without it.

Highly enjoyable
By Cimorene Enchanted
I'm a huge Seanan McGuire fan. If she wrote an electrical repair manual, I'd give it a try. And I've always been an Oz fan. So I was predisposed to like this short story. And I liked it a lot.

"Emeralds to Emeralds, Dust to Dust" is set years after the final Oz books, and Dorothy Gale is, as the description says, all grown up. She's living in the Emerald City, but not where one might expect, and things between her and Ozma have gotten dark and complicated. And because things aren't interesting enough, there's a dead body and a mystery to go with it.

The writing style is classic McGuire - snappy dialogue, good descriptions. I fount the fascinating details the true mark of genius in this case.Little things that I've always found amusing about the Oz series, like the green lensed glasses and the meaning of the color white, popped up throughout and convinced me that Seanan McGuire is as much a fan of the Land of Oz as her readers would be. Her characters felt familiar, but the dimensions she added to them were entirely new and highly enjoyable. This isn't a Technicolor fairytale in any way. There was grit and noir to go with this dystopia, and I loved every minute of it.

My only objection was that this was a short story. I'd love to see more of this version of Dorothy Gale.

Reimagined, Indeed!
By Amazon Customer
I'm a fan of Seanan McGuire's October Daye and Velveteen series so when I saw this I decided to give it a try. The actual story, a murder mystery in the Emerald City, is fairly straight forward and quickly resolved, but what captivated me was the world building, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say world re-building she fits into this short story. She takes the classic Land of Oz and gives it a darker, grittier feel. There are also hints and suggestions of backstory to the characters and world outside this story itself that really make me want to know more about grown up Dorothy's life here in Oz. I'd love to see her revisit and expand on what she has started here in this short story.
