focusing on the brillo-heads

For Peter Parker, the beat goes on. Meaning that it's not a normal Peter Parker day unless it's a craaaappy Peter Parker day. Forget that Peter's made a deal with Old Scratch and so had his life with Mary Jane wiped away as if it never happened. Forget that his recent roommate turned out to be part of a police conspiracy to frame him. Forget that he's just walked into his Aunt May naked and getting busy.
No, what's really stressing him is that the two most persistently aggravating pains in his tukhes, J. Jonah Jameson and Norman Osborn, have somehow managed to achieve positions of great power. Jameson is the new mayor of New York City, and one of his first executive moves was to establish an Anti-Spider squad to hunt down you know who. But Peter's even more incensed that Osborn has become the uber-guy in the superhero world, having parleyed his shooting of the Skrull queen into a seat at the head of the table. Norman Osborn now ramrods H..A.M.M.E.R., the espionage and world policing agency which has replaced the disbanded S.H.I.E.L.D. Dude even controls the Thunderbolts. But even more insulting to Peter is that Osborn has assumed a superhero identity, the Iron Patriot, and now heads up the Dark Avengers, a team which includes its own Spider-Man. Peter Parker has had enough of this twaddle.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: AMERICAN SON collects issues #595-599 of the ongoing series and the short story pulled from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: EXTRA! #3, featuring a young Harry Osborn getting taught a messed-up lesson by his father. This story arc also heavily features Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn and Harry's daddy issues. Harry's been thru a lot, what with the drugs, the occasional fragility of his state of mind, and his constant, desperate attempts to please his father. Boy has even donned the Goblin costume and taken his best shot at the wallcrawler. In this post-Mephisto era, Harry doesn't know that Peter's Spidey and, supposedly, he's matured enough that he's become his own man, no longer dependent on his father's approval. Maybe. But what if Norman Osborn doesn't want to let go of his son just yet?
Writer Joe Kelly explores this twisted father-son relationship and plonks Peter right in the middle. Norman is essentially in charge of the planet, yeah, and he wants his son to partake in his success, wants him to play a role in his organization. Harry balks at first, but one startling revelation changes his mind, and he accepts the offer. And Peter Parker's bad day gets even worse.
If you don't find Harry Osborn at all irritating, then you'll like this brillo head-centric story arc. In fact, the spotlight is so much on Harry that at times Peter is pushed to the sideline. Peter is extremely concerned over Harry's hooking up with his psycho dad, but there's a chance that Peter just may be underestimating his best pal. Me, I admit that Harry Osborn isn't one of my favorite supporting characters (I'm simply not down with the daddy issues). However, Joe Kelly submits some very good writing and really excellent character moments, and that includes how the Osborns are portrayed.
There are also several nice comedic moments involving Aunt May, Peter, Aunt May's fiance, and Aunt May's fiance's son. And it gets even more interesting when you know that Aunt May's fiance is J. Jonah Jameson's dad. It's pretty priceless, just picturing Peter and J. Jonah as brothers-in-law. Peter and Harry's friendship is handled nicely, and you get a sense of how rich boy Harry can actually be a real friend of Peter's. There are also further developments with Menace/Lily (ugh!). And sorta cool is Spidey and Wolverine having a heart to heart, the subject of which is Norman Osborn.
My feeling is that it's inevitable that it's Spider-Man who eventually takes down the Goblin/Iron Patriot/mean old dad. It just doesn't happen in this arc. It's too soon, and Marvel hasn't nearly enough mined the Dark Reign thing (although things may be coming to a head in THE LIST and the upcoming SIEGE arcs). For now, we get to check out Peter's very cool way of infiltrating the Dark Avengers, and we learn the fallout to that act of sneaky. Norman Osborn lives up to his street cred as latest nasty bastard to lord it over the 616 Marvel Universe. We get exposed to the ick factor, a painful betrayal, torture and more torture, and Osborn's latest creepy insane power play is unearthed. The American Son arc, I think it's worth your time. Never mind that there doesn't seem to be a regular artist assigned to this set of issues. But the guest artists are good enough that the visuals aren't sabotaged.
Here's one big gripe I got, though: One of my favorite short stories in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: EXTRA! is "Birthday Boy" (from issue #2). In it, Wolverine chose Spidey to be his bar-hopping wingman on his birthday because, of all the folks he knew, Spidey is the one guy who expects better of Logan, expects him to be more than just a stone cold killer. Logan confessed to Peter that even his X-Men teammates expect him to follow thru on his lethal berserker ways. But not Peter.
So, in the American Son story (issue #595), Wolverine regales Spidey with certain words of wisdom, regarding Osborn: "Time comes an' he slips up... which he will... an' you do find yourself in a position to t'give Normie his due... end it. Permanent." I personally think this is sound advice. Thing is, in light of the "Birthday Boy" story, in which Logan seems to really appreciate Peter being this walking moral compass, I don't buy that Logan would just turn around and dispense this sort of advice to Spidey. So there.
By the way, I'm still mad at One More Day and Joe Quesada.

Good, but overdone...

Not real familiar with Joe Kelly, but I enjoyed his writing for this arc. The story focuses on the relationship between Norman and Harry and how Norman STILL wants to control his son and all that is well in his life. Basically, Norman invites Harry to be part of the Dark Avengers as the "American Son," an iron man-esque prototype. What ensues is some backstabbing, coupled with a couple minor and one major twist to the life of poor Harry.
Kelly does a good job capturing the relationship between the father and son pair, but it almost overpowers the story. It's still Amazing Spider-Man, not Amazing Osborns. Spider-Man takes a backseat for a few issues until some spectacular battle scenes near the end.
Overall, this arc was a decent story, but I felt it could have been shortened to about 3 issues and still accomplished the same effect.

Excellent

One of my favorite Spidey story arcs. It strongly focus's on Harry's relationship with his father, which is a nice change of pace. It's extremely similar to the "Sins Past" arc a hundred or so issues back, but the focus on Harry rather than Peter makes the slightly rehashed story worthwhile.
This arc is one of those that really shows how evil Norman is, and why he's Spidey's greatest nemesis.
