The X-Men battle Vampires (but it's not as epic as it sounds)

WHAT IS IT
It's the X-Men versus the collected might of the world's vampires in the first story arc from the new X-Men (Volume 3), spanning issues #1-6, which take place directly after 2010's big X-Men: Second Coming crossover.
Beneath the gorgeous dust jacket this hardcover collection wraps the six issues in an attractive black hardcover with red debossing. Interior pages are thick and glossy - meant to withstand multiple re-reads.
INTRODUCTION
X-Men (Vol. 3) launched in 2010 as a fresh start for casual X-Men fans, after the main titles endured three crossovers rich in backstory in a little over a year. With Marvel shedding four years of increasingly dire storytelling for a new "Heroic Age," it made sense to relaunch their flagship team into a title palatable for a casual fan and a part of the larger Marvel universe.
The goal? Less serpentine mutantkind intrique, and more battles and big name guest stars.
This first collection delivers on the promise of less intrigue - in fact, it's barely intriguing at all, never really gaining momentum to become an engaging story.
THE STORY (includes minor spoilers)
The book begins with vampires unleashing a dirty bomb of infected blood in broad daylight in the middle of San Francisco, which catches a depowered Jubilee in its blast. Jubilee was a long-time sidekick of Wolverine, and he takes the attack personally, unleashing his wrath on the vampires infesting the city.
When Wolverine and Colossus run into vampire slayer Blade they discover the vampires are up to a lot more than a few acts of domestic terrorism - Dracula's son Xarus recently slayed his own father, and is seeking to rally the various vampire sects into one great race, and San Francisco is ground zero for their gathering!
The story reaches a climax with an infected Jubilee luring Wolverine away from the rest of the team, Cyclops trying to make a deal with an unlikely ally, and the X-Men's island home being stormed by thousands of vampires!
THE SCRIPT
Writer Victor Gischler never find the right pace for this story arc, and as a result the six issues both race and drag. Part of the problem is the need to show the vampire's side of the story, which tends to drag with needless exposition and monologues. Their flat segments compress our time with the X-Men, which feels fleeting.
The tight focus on Wolverine, Cyclops, Jubilee, and Angel precludes many other popular characters, who are relegated to the deep background. Xarus's master plan is a tenuous at best, as is Cyclop's initial hail mary plan that takes up two issues. So many vampires are packed into the Bay area that any result but the total annihilation of the human race seems impossible.
The first half of the book relies on Wolverine for all of its action; the final two issues have more of the X-Men in on the fight. However, if you're an action junkie be warned - there are less than a dozen pages of non-Wolverine battle in this collection. Some of the most interesting fights occur off-panel - particularly, Dracula's death and the hunt for his body is detailed in a trio of issues not collected here.
(The X-Men: Curse of the Mutants OneShots and Namor: The First Mutant - Volume 1: Curse of the Mutants fill in most of the gaps, but they're inessential.)
ARTWORK
The luscious cover art of this collection doesn't reflect the interiors. Cover illustrator Adi Granov delivers stunning, photo-realistic depictions of the X-team on the six covers collected here, each worthy of framing.
Interior penciler Paco Medina has a slick, pleasing style that's reminiscent of the 1990's X-Men cartoon. His strong suit is clear, easy-to-follow action. He's great on Cyclops and Wolverine, a little weaker on X-women, and his vampires lack bite.
BOTTOM LINE
On the whole. X-Men: Curse of the Mutants reads like a sideline mini-series than a main X-title. That's the point of this ongoing - to present non-essential, easy-to-follow X-Men stories. However, just because it lives up to its goal doesn't make it worth picking up.
RECOMMENDED READING
Fans seeking quick, casual X-Men reads should try the recent X-Men Legacy: Emplate or any of the Astonishing X-Men collections. If you really love the Adi Granov cover art, try Astonishing X-Men: Ghost Box, illustrated by Simone Bianchi. For more intrigue with Cyclops in charge, try the hefty X-Men: Nation X collection.
The recent Second Coming had big battles with high stakes, but it's a little hard to follow without some background - if violently shredding vampires sounded up your alley you might dig the first volume of the recently concluded X-Force - X-Force Vol. 1: Angels and Demons.

Curse of the Mutants Delivers... Barely

First off, this hardcover is more enjoyable if you purchase X-Men: Curse of the Mutants OneShots and Namor: The First Mutant - Volume 1: Curse of the Mutants. The Namor TPB is particularly good, as the art has a dark undertone that is absolutely perfect for the story. The one shots are unnecessary and only add more detail to the X-Men vs Vampires storyline.
While I do not doubt that this storyline was born out of the vampire craze currently plaguing the entertainment business (Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, etc.), this manages to actually make a decent story out of it. After Dracula's son, Xarus, slays his father and scatters his body across the world, he plans to once again make vampires a dominant species. A vampiric suicide bomber infects Jubilee, whom Pixie rushes to Utopia. The X-Club and Blade confirm that Jubilee is now a vampire. Cyclops determines that it's up to the mutants to stop the vampires and sends Storm and Gambit to retrieve his headless body (Covered in the Storm + Gambit one shot) and Namor is tasked with getting his head (Covered in Namor: The First Mutant 1-4). The rest of the series is pretty much the X-Men dealing with a member of their team being turned into a vampire and then the Vampire Clans attack Utopia. And yes, it's a pretty epic battle.
Overall, this storyline didn't live up to my expectations. Occasionally awkward dialogue and serviceable art make this HC mediocre. If you're a casual fan of the X-Titles, I would recommend picking this up. If you're a newcomer to the X-Franchise I would recommend getting Grant Morrison's New X-Men, Vol. 1 or if you have the cash, Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men Omnibus.

Incredibly Mediocre

With Messiah Complex, Messiah War, and Second Coming renewing my interest in X-Men and Marvel Comics, I came into this new series with elevated expectations. Despite the seemingly obvious attempt to cash in on the modern vampire craze, I was hoping for another eventful story arc. Unfortunately this failed to deliver on multiple counts.
While the story starts off with an interesting direction thanks to Jubilee playing a prominent role, everything else feels boring and uninspired. A rather boring and predictable enemy in Xarus, the major battle and climax has little suspense and drama, and the final resolution just wraps up too quickly. Blade is completely wasted as a supporting character and adds little to the story other then the apparent requirement that if Vampires are involved, Blade has to show up. And Dracula's portion of the story? Mostly told in another book.
Overall, the book is a quick read and might be interesting for fans interested in seeing what happens with Jubilee. Beyond that? You can skip it.
