A member of the famed Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division, Donald J. Rich went ashore on D-Day at Utah Beach, was wounded in the bloody conflict at Carentan, landed in a flimsy plywood-and-canvas glider on the battlefields of Holland, and survived the grim siege with the "Battling Bastards of Bastogne" during the Battle of the Bulge. Glider Infantryman is his eyewitness account of how he, along with thousands of other young men from farms, small towns, and cities across the United States, came together to answer the call of their nation. It is also a heartfelt tribute to the many thousands who gave their lives in this struggle. Coauthored by Kevin Brooks, the son of Rich's best friend and World War II comrade, Glider Infantryman covers a span of nearly three years; his return home, five months after the war's end, as a toughened bazooka gunner and veteran of five campaigns. Rich's first-person narrative includes vivid coverage of the action, featuring an especially rare account of arriving on a combat landing zone by glider. Detailed, day-to-day depiction of some of the heaviest fighting in Holland follows, including the action at Opheusden, the center of the infamous "Island." Later highlights include the Battle of the Bulge, where Rich recounts his experiences in some of the hottest defensive fighting of the European Theater, including the epic tank battles at Marvie, Champs, and Foy.

Review
"This is a good and entertaining read with plenty of action...Rich's detailed personal experiences and the emotional burden of his traumatic year in combat come across as genuine and therein lies the real value of this narrative." Russell K. Brown - The Journal of America's Military Past - Winter 2013
Glider Infantryman is a well researched, gripping account of military combat in Europe during World War II. Brooks doesn't sugarcoat the story. As a teenager when World War II ended in 1945, I often spoke to returning veterans and listened closely. I remember their faces, especially their eyes. The sheer brutality of the killing left them mostly silent and grateful to breathe. Those men inspired in me a sense of duty and courage that I have never forgotten. This book is a fitting tribute to them all. Jerry Parr, Assistant Director, US Secret Service (ret.)
"A gripping first person account . . . a well written and exceptional book."--"American Airborne Association Journal"

""Glider Infantryman" is a well researched, gripping account of military combat in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe during World War II. Brooks doesn't sugarcoat the story: The brutality and suffering are real - so is the heroism of ordinary men. Like so many veterans from that era, Don Rich found it hard to talk about his experiences, and some haunted him into old age. With a faith Don met through his chaplain, Gordon Cosby (my pastor), he was finally able to release his anger and bitterness in a life of service to others.
As a teenager when World War II ended in 1945, I often spoke to returning veterans and listened closely. I remember their faces, especially their eyes. The sheer brutality of the killing left them mostly silent and grateful to breathe in and out, moment by moment. Those men inspired in me a sense of duty and courage that I have never forgotten. This book is a fitting tribute to them all."--Jerry S. Parr, assistant director, US Secret Service (ret.)

My father-in-law would have enjoyed it.
By L. Jerrett
My father-in-law was in Company F of the 327th Glider Infantry and he fought in all the engagements that Don Rich was in. After talking with co-author Kevin Brooks I purchased and read this book. It was very descriptive from the point of view of a young kid who becomes a front line soldier who experienced much in the way of combat, survival, and army life in general. Most of the relevant books that I've read dealt with troop movements, particulars of various battles and decisions made by the commanders that influenced the battles. This book contains some of this information but only enough to give the reader some "big picture" context as to what was going on around Mr. Rich. The real meat of this book is the direct experiences he relays about training, preparing for combat, and combat itself and the times in between. The frustrations, anxiety, exhaustion, death, fear and anger experienced by him would help anyone understand how much those soldiers suffered and sacrificed, not only during the war but throughout their lives. This is a very well researched and well written story. My hat's off to Mr. Rich for his service and his willingness to tell his story. Also, thank you to Mr. Brooks for putting it all together and giving credit to the soldiers of the glider infantry. My father-in-law would have enjoyed it.

Great Story from basic traing, D-Day, through the end of the war!
By Nicholas Rich
I read this book about a year after my father, Marvin Rich, passed away. He was mentioned by his cousin Don Rich several times at the beginning of the book. My Dad had mentioned Don previously but never got into great detail on what happened on the battlefield. Of course this is typical of most WWII veterans.
Typically all you hear of is the beach landing and parachute drops during the D Day. This gives a totally different perspective on a different type of infantryman and what the individual soldier endured from basic training to their final day on active duty during WWII.
I am hoping the US Army War College has read this book or are using it as part of their curriculum.

A WWII book for everyone.
By cynthia hummel
I have the hardback version and have found it extremely helpful in understanding the story of the 101st Glidermen. Books and history often discuss the paratroopers, who got a lot of deserved credit. The glider pilots, including one of the co-authors, also played a distinguished role in American History.
