He shows them the White House, and learns about Christmas traditions and legends from Australia to Turkey to Mexico. The effect is didactic, as one pup after another reels off a little speech, but the tone is upbeat and the illustrations are charming, if a tad stiff. The best scenes involve the pooch's daily life romping about the White House. “Dog,” a Portuguese water dog, is clearly meant to be Bo, and readers occasionally see the legs of the First Family and an arm that they can surmise to be the First Lady's shooing him away from her vegetable garden.Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library

Tim Bowers began his illustrating career working as an artist for Hallmark Cards. In 1986 he illustrated his first picture book, "The Toy Circus" by Jan Wahl. Since then, he has illustrated more than twenty books for children. Mr. Bowers lives with his family in Granville, Ohio.

Darling Book for Children and Adults Alike

First Dog's White House Christmas is one of the cutest Christmas books I've ever seen and is all the more special because it features our current First Dog Bo. This is a must have for everyone with a Christmas book collection or who loves dogs.

The only reason I didn't give it a one star was the information in this book did spark my intrest and after my granddaughter went to bed did some 'googling' for information that this book brought to mind. The idea behind this book was a wonderful one, but in my opinion the writer just didn't pull it off. My granddaughter lost intrest after th first few pages and I kept trying to read it to her, got half way through turned to the last couple of pages and then just couldn't finish it in entirely.
People who are familiar with the Obama family in office know that this dog was suppose to be "Bo" but in the book he is 'Dog'. The story is from Dog's perspective but descriptions are that of an adult. He tries to describe the white house and the traditions like the huge gingerbread house made into a white house or the sizes of the Nativity scene or how many Christmas trees there are etc. Then dogs from around the world start showing up and each one describes traditions from their countries. But instead of the writing being interesting and something a child could understand and be interested in was just written in a corny way with much left to be desired. As I said my young granddaughter lost interest fast... and I could only imagine an older child would be left, as I was, with questions as 'is that really true' or want to look it up for more information because it didn't give enough to explain to someone who had never heard of that tradition or way of life.
