"Stephen Binz has bridged the gap between contemplative biblical study and practical application. This is a rare achievement that many readers of Scripture will find profound and spiritually formative."--Thomas C. Oden, general editor, Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture
"In the Ancient-Future Bible Study series, Stephen Binz opens our minds, imaginations, and hearts to the experience of Scripture that God intends. In each book he leads us through the movements of lectio divina so that by understanding the Word and meditating on it we are drawn closer to the Lord in prayer and prompted to act on it. I believe that users of this series will encounter the Holy Spirit and find themselves enfolded in God's love."--Bert Ghezzi, author, Adventures in Daily Prayer
"The Ancient-Future Bible Study series revives a simple, time-honored framework for listening to God's voice known as lectio divina. This framework does not so much constrain as bring liberty--liberty to explore, to listen, and to grow. Stephen Binz's work is carefully considered, richly textured, and solidly grounded. His seed thoughts will help you dwell richly in the Word."--David Neff, editor in chief, Christianity Today

Great study and insights on Peter
By Valerie Caraotta
This study on Peter by Stephen Binz is an Ancient-Future Bible study that incorporates five movements. The movements, described in detail are a listening ear, a reflection on the meaning of the text, praying in response to God's Word, along with resting in God and becoming a faithful witness in daily life. There are different reading plans given to help you choose the pace to suit your interest, along with the option of making it an individual or group study.
The life of Peter will be highlighted throughout Acts, Matthew, and John primarily and will focus on his character and mission both before and after Jesus death. Peter appears in the Gospels more frequently than all the other disciples and is an interesting man of contradiction. His impulsive, straightforward, and blunt personality collaborates with a continual pattern of invitation, risk, failure, and rescue. Author Stephen Binz states "When we fail while attempting great things, even when our failure is caused by doubt and fear, we are growing in faith." Learn how this man of intensity in his later life directs his efforts in exhorting Pastors to "tend to the flock", just as Jesus encouraged him to "feed my sheep" before his crucifixation.
You will gain a deep picture of Peter and grow to appreciate the depths of which his convictions stood for. This talented author will bring out truths in one of the finest bible studies you will find on Peter. In each of the 5 movements discussed at large at the beginning of the book will have each chapter theme that will prompt you as to how to use each to gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject at hand.
I have never heard of these movements previously nor of this author, but both have been rewarding in my journey through this book. I highly recommend it to you with a 5 star rating.

Don't worry, its both Christian and good
By Josh Gribble
With the scathing one star review, I was intrigued enough to check out this Bible study. After reading several pages and seeing numerous differences between the content of this book and that review, it was obvious the reviewer had not read the book but was fighting an uniformed battle against an imaginary foe.
In reality, there is nothing strange here: it is simply a Bible study that introduces a timeless way of reading scripture and praying to God. It takes a high view of scripture and of God's presence in the world. The information provided about lectio divina, and commentary on the scripture is concise and easy to understand but deep enough that it may offer some new insight into passages of scripture.
After a good introduction to the practice of letio divina, the study is comprised of 30 Bible studies about Peter. There are several suggested ways to use the material individually in groups. Each study has the following parts. I used the first study (Jesus calling Peter) for all examples.
1. Lectio(reading with a listening ear)
One passage of scripture is provided in the book to read and you are encouraged to use your own Bible as well to see different translations, take notes etc. Commentary is provided which takes note of "the church's scholarship and tradition." Compared to the anecdotes you may find in some devotional resources, this is considerably meatier without being too abstract or weighty for devotional use. The Lectio section concludes with some questions about the text for reflection.
2. Meditatio (reflecting on the meaning and message of the text)
The goal of this section is to personalize the text while reflecting on its meaning. Less material here is provided since personal and reflection are internal things- but questions are provided to help give focus. As an example: "what does being a fisher of men and women mean in my own life? How is Jesus leading me to be a fisher in his kingdom?"
3. Oratio (praying in response to God's word)
Again this is a personal and internal thing. This section urges the reader to "pray to God in your heart in whatever way seems to respond to the divine Word spoken to you in the Scriptures." A (optional)brief prayer is provided as a "launching pad" to help you begin this prayer.
4. Contemplatio (quietly resting in God)
There is a brief suggestion for helping you contemplate the passage. For example: "Imaginatively place yourself in a boat, on the sea, on top of a mountain, or some other place where you can easily experience the divine presence. Let the word of the Jesus "come follow me" echo throughout your spirit."
This is the closest to "eastern meditation" that the negative review seems to fear, but clearly the focus is on the Scripture passage you have just read. It has a different impact than the first step in which you are gathering information, but can be quite rewarding when we are still and meditate on the words of God.
5. Operatio (faithful witness in daily life)
A question is provided to help you answer how you can live out the Scripture.
As you can see, this is a solid Bible study that guides the reader into a deeper understanding of what Scripture says, and encourages them to prayerfully listen to God.
