'I don't know if you're working for Jiminez or not. But either way, the general made a mistake. You should've been in jail. Now you're loose, and that worries me. Because you're still a killer...'
Flying charter around the Caribbean wasn't quite the same as flying in Korea, but it was still a living and Carr had built up a solid reputation over the years and managed to keep his hands clean- something he believed you needed to do in that part of the world. But when he is almost brought down by mercenary pilots flying for the newly instated La Republica government, and they make approaches, as do the FBI, he realises that it is inevitable that things will get a bit messy.
But with work drying up, and the fact that an old war buddy is flying for La Republica, he finds what he sees as an escape from the conflict, flying a camera-plane for a major Hollywood movie.
First published in 1966, Shooting Script was Gavin Lyall's fourth novel.

An entertaining and wry book
By James L. Settle
I used to own a copy of this book, which I had read right after it came out. Somehow over the years it got lost. I literally had to scour the Earth to find a copy (in the UK) and bought it through Amazon.
It's an entertaining read about a free-lance air cargo pilot who becomes tangled in a web of deceit, politics, and finally war during a time of upheaval in Central America. He is chartered to fly a camera plane for a film company which is shooting a movie starring a famous John Wayne-esque actor about a tough loner who supports rebels bringing down a dictator. The story line of the book parallels the story line of the "shooting script" for the movie in many ways.
Murder, mayhem, sabotage, and misunderstandings entangle the pilot and the actor in the affairs of a dictator whose rule of a fictional Central American country is being challenged by a rebel leader (a la Fidel Castro).
Its main characters include the pilot, the famous actor, a lovely-but-tough lawyer, a mysterious and stunningly-beautiful senorita, and the actor's Latin American sidekick. And the whole Air Force of the dictator's country pitted against a shabby and worn-out World War II bomber and its pilot.
Like stories about flying? About movies? About murder, espionage, mistaken identity, and intrigue? This book has 'em all. And more.
Can a brick, or even a ton of bricks, destroy an airplane ... or ten? Read all about it in "Shooting Script." You'll like it ... or I'll eat my own copy of this uniquely charming, whimsical and highly entertaining action/adventure tale.
This, my third reading of the book, continued to intrigue and entertain me. I'm glad I bought it.

There was nothing to do now but watch him die...
By Paul Magnussen
Shooting Script is my favourite book of Gavin Lyall's. Like Lyall himself, his protagonist is a former RAF fighter pilot; but rather than writing novels, the latter is scraping a living by running a shoe-string charter service around the Caribbean. Life seems to be taking a turn for the better when a film company hires him at a considerably improved pay level to fly a camera plane; but he soon finds out there is more to this contract than meets the eye.
As regards writing convincingly about flying, the difference between Lyall and some chairborne clown with a team of researchers is night and day. Furthermore, most of the other details ring true as well (although allowance must made for a fictional South American country, for obvious reasons).
The tone of the story, told in the first person, is somewhat cynical, but with a dry humour that is extremely entertaining, as are the twists and turns of the plot.
First rate on all counts.

flying in the Caribean--with bullets
By Norman A. West
Another English writer with a way with word. A good story about movies, flying, revolution and: a girl. Very good narrative, a decently complicated plot and interesting characters. I recommend it heartily.
