Lopez provides a new and exciting profile of Shenoute of Atripe that analyzes the abbot's career and contextualizes it within the social history of the late antique East. Perhaps the book's most important contribution is its proper (and overdue) restoration of Shenoute, one of the best-documented rural patrons of late antiquity, to the broader conversation about poverty, patronage, and shifting centers of power that has reshaped our understanding of the later Roman Empire. This book has much to offer both scholars interested in Shenoute and those working on the wider empire to which he belonged.

Welcome addition to the scanty literature on Shenoute

The fifth-century Egyptian abbot Shenoute was a larger-than-life figure in his time, but he scarcely figures in the history of the monastic movement, partly perhaps because he is not an attractive figure, partly because his long life is almost undocumented outside his own Coptic writings (which have never been properly collected and edited), and partly because his "White Monastery" left no lasting impression after a brief period of dominance in the lower Thebaid. Till now there have been only two book-length studies in English that I am aware of, both concerned with his rule within the walls of the establishment. Lopez's is the first to examine Shenoute's role in the larger community, in particular his conflict with the rich and powerful in defense of the "poor", a blanket term signifying all those who lay outside the secular power structure. He also provides a useful chapter on the abbot's destruction of the temple at Atripe and his plundering of a notable's home, putting these in the context of surviving forms of paganism in Egypt.
The book was originally written as a dissertation, and the scholarship is unimpeachable, but is thankfully free of academic stiffness and is quite readable if you happen to have an interest in late-antique Egypt or in Shenoute himself. I believe the story of this rebarbative monk will come out of the shadows in the 21st century, and Lopez's study is a good start.
