About the Author
Dr. Alan J. McComas was born in Bruce Rock in Western Australia and immigrated to the United Kingdom where he attended Great Yarmouth Grammar School. He received both his BSc in physiology and MBBS from Durham University in the UK and was trained at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne, the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London, and the Department of Physiology at the University College London. After successive positions at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1971 he became Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. In 1988, he also became the Founding Chair in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University. Since 1996 he has held the position of Emeritus Professor of Medicine.
Dr. McComas has pursued a successful career in medicine and physiology. His research accomplishments include some of the earliest microelectrode studies of muscle diseases, the electrophysiological estimation of numbers of human motor nerve fibers, and, more recently, the demonstration that magnetic stimulation of the brain may abort migraine attacks. In 2001, he achieved the Distinguished Researcher Award of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He was also awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2005. On two occasions, he has been peer-ranked in the top 2% of doctors in North America. He has authored or coauthored seven books.

400 Pages Packed With Facts... Not Just for "Popular" Science Readers

It is an interesting fact that electrophysiology is getting to be a "lost" topic in Neuroscience education, and in fact has actually "migrated" to the exciting new field of Neural Engineering. You can get a great Neuro education today, especially on the clinical side, and literally not have to take a single course in electrophysiology. In fact, most of the books available today on electrochemistry and electrobiology were either written between 1890 and 1916, or are 2012/2013 texts on neural engineering, what a fascinating dichotomy!
This book is an astounding bridge between those two worlds. Believe it or not, for such a "tiny" topic as charge separation in ion channels, the book IS a breathtaking page turner! The author, with a deft and subtle hand, balances history, detective stories, astonishing examples, and VERY deep science and math. After all, dynamic systems has taken over this field, and most advanced texts are filled with partial differential equations, linear algebra and matrix calculus, not to mention the foundation of DST-- differential equations. So how do you balance something readable, fun, complex, and in some senses so changed as to be unrecognizable? This author does it!
If I had to get inside this author's neurons, I'd guess he targeted this toward Neurologists that missed electrophys, but then assumed that many educated science readers are not afraid of detailed science either. The balance is pretty amazing, because it is clearly written at a graduate level, yet a bright High School student can get this with a little concentration. This guy ought to give lectures to teachers! So comprehensive and relevant, that this could be a jumping off point for medical devices, transcranial stimulation, MRI, and even neural engineering. Highly recommended.

Science History made relevant

McComas is writing in a fascinating style, that combines (mostly) excellent scientific descriptions with wonderfully personal accounts on historic events.
This book should be fascinating to every student of Neuroscience. Despite the many claims to the contrary, the nervous system works via movements of ions across channels. That is the code behind how the brain works!This book illuminates the discoveries of these fundamental facts, the people that made these discoveries and the historical context in which the discoverers worked. And it clearly illustrates how scientific concepts change over time, how understanding makes things clear that were previously mysterious and how new discoveries sometimes require subtle and sometimes dramatic changes in our assumptions.
