About the Author
After receiving a BA (Hons) Degree in French and Spanish from Birmingham University in 1967, ROGER HOUSDEN started his career in London working for Times Newspapers. Within three years he went on to being a freelance feature writer for The Guardian and an interviewer for the BBC. In the 1980s he founded The Open Gate, the first year-round conference and retreat program to bring mainstream figures in psychology, spiritual traditions, and the arts from the United States to the UK. The Open Gate was a seminal influence and inspiration for many of the learning initiatives that have developed since in the UK, including Schumacher College and Schumacher Lecture Series, and Be the Change. In 1998 Housden immigrated to the U.S. and since then has been a full-time writer for publishers in New York City. He lives in the Bay Area.

Beautiful

I will begin my review by saying that I have only read one other book of poetry. Consequently, I am not sure if there is a "correct" way to rate a book of poetry so I will approach this review as I have other books in other genres.I loved the simplistic beauty of this book. The compilation of poems, from poets both ancient and modern, would have been beautiful by themselves; however, Roger Housden`s essays provided a wonderfully intelligent cohesiveness between them.
The poems were separated into six major areas of emphasis:
1. The Joy - celebrates new love and marital commitment
2. The Journey - focuses on two individuals becoming one and going through everyday life
3. The Work - delves on the growth of a relationship that is gained through shared experiences and challenges
4. The Love - explores the different forms and aspects of love
5. The Union - focuses on the the melding of two souls that begins after marriage and expands throughout it
6. Saving Grace - Loved this one because it deals with imperfections.
This was an excellent compilation. I have already placed two on my Amazon wishlist to purchase when they become available in December. I made so many notes in my Kindle that I'm just going to point out a few of the most beautiful stanzas that I read.
I will definitely pick up other books of poetry by Mr. Housden because this one was so superbly presented!

A Wonderful Collection

Roger Housden has compiled an absolutely wonderful collection of love poems in Twenty Poems to Bless Your Marriage: And One to Save It. Between each poem, Housden writes an essay that gives some background on the poet and the poem. The book is broken down in six categories: The Joy, The Journey, The Work, The Love, The Union, and The Saving Grace. Overall, this is an excellent complication of poetry that deals specifically with all phases of marriage.

Another Roger Housden Masterpiece Collection

I love this collection! But even more than that, I like the analysis and commentary provided by Roger Housden. Throughout his series of anthologies, he has carefully chosen poems that fit the theme of the particular collection. This one is no different. His insightful essays help me discover nuances in the works (usually but not exclusively by well known poets) presented. His focused collections are all gems, but this one in particular moves me because it includes poems that put into words that which cannot be easily said about the love I have for my wife, soulmate and best friend. Although Beth is not as much as student of poetry as I am, she too has taken to picking it up from time to time to let a verse evoke images and feelings that enrich our lives. My recommendation, keep it on the coffee table or near the kitchen breakfast bar to enjoy with coffee. It's much more lasting than a brownie, less fattening, and serves as healthy nutrition for the soul-and relationships!
