Great Kids series!

Stella Batts is a hit at our house! My daughter can't get enough of these books. The family owning a candy store sparks her imagination. We are always waiting for the next in the series to be released.

We love this series. In this book especially we could relate to hair mishaps. Courtney's writing is spot on when it comes to life with young girls, i would know. Stella is a sensitive, bright girl that i am happy to have as a role-model for my kids.

The Second Gem From The Stella Batts Book Series!

Stella Batts, like many young girls, is uncertain of her place in the world and when she has something that sets her apart that makes her feel "out of the norm". In the first book, it was her first name. In Stella Batts: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow, Stella sets her sites on a new piece of candy (Magical Glow In-The-Dark Chewing Gum - bought from her parent's candy store) which ends up not bringing her the happiness she thought it would bring, but with Stella performing a "do-it-yourself" haircut that obviously does not go unnoticed at school. In addition, Stella's best friend is moving away - Horrors! Eventhough Stella feels subconscious and upset about the teasing, she handles it in a respectful and honestly "grown up" way.
My nine year old daughter absolutely LOVED Stella Batts: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow as she fell in love with Stella reading her first book, Stella Batts Needs a New Name. Although you sometimes see books in a series decrease in quality as the series grinds on, my daughter said that she enjoyed "Hair Today" just as much. Part of this, I think, is that my daughter is also a "big sister" (similar to Stella) and her little sister sometimes annoys her. In addition, my daughter and Stella are the same age and they both want to be writers someday.
As I stated in my first "Stella Batts" review, I found the book to be very similar in style and "niceness" to Stephanie Barden's Cinderella Smith series of books - the characters are polite, postive, and generous with none of the angst or ugliness that seems to inhabit other books for girls. Sheinmel deals with alot of the same peer pressure issues that our girls do (like being teased for things outside of our control such as our looks or our name and thinking that these issues "are the end of the world"), but Sheinmel brings reality to the subject while maintaining the innocence of youth. I'm no prude, but don't little girls get enough peer pressure and bullying in school without reading about it in their leisure time? Although my nine year old read the book cover to cover with no help, I would expect that a suitable reading age would be 8-13 not because of difficult words, but because the book is 160 pages long.
