About the Author
David Weintraub is a writer, editor, and photographer based in South Carolina and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A former long-time resident of San Francisco, he has authored six guidebooks to the hiking trails of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Monterey/Santa Cruz area. He has also written a guide to kayaking on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, which is in its second edition. His photography career includes photojournalism for daily newspapers, corporate and magazine assignments, and nature photography.

Red Maple Swamp and Fort Hill Walk
Gaining a boardwalk, follow a curvy course through the swamp with rest benches along the way. At a T-junction, turn left and continue to follow the boardwalk as it zigs, zags, and wanders across the kettle hole's bottom. On a hazy summer day, the light filtering through the maple leaves casts a magical, golden hue. Like the Cape's many ponds, this kettle hole was formed by a chunk of ice left behind by a glacier. Once steep-walled, erosion has lessened the angle of the surrounding hillsides.
Some of the old maples here have elaborately twisted trunks, making them perfect subjects for photographs. In places, the forest canopy thins, and the added sunlight stimulates a riot of vegetation, which forms impenetrable thickets just beside the boardwalk. Where the boardwalk forks left to Hemenway Road, go straight on a path that soon climbs via log steps to a paved path. Turn right, passing restrooms (seasonal) on your left, and climb to an overlook of Nauset Marsh, left. There are rest benches here, and the view extends across the marsh to the Atlantic Ocean. An old Coast Guard station, now an environmental education center, stands on a bluff to the northeast.

awesome guide to cape cod trails

This is a fantastic guide to walking trails in Cape Cod. Each entry has a key with all the info you need to find and enjoy the walks. I have an older dog so it's important to know which trails are appropriate for him, and this book is so helpful. We are really enjoying exploring the many trails on the Cape.

This little gem was originally a library book find. After seeing, had to buy my own personal copy. A lot of great trail ideas and detailed directions. One of the best walking trail books of Cape Cod that I have found.

Decent hiking book which needs updating.

David wrote this book in 1995 and it was published in 1996. There have been two hurricanes which have hit since, and the hikes need updating.
For example, in one hike, he says it is by the airport. It took us a day to find this second, all grass airport with no hangers, no tower - something out of a landing field in England in WWII. I was looking for the Spitfires. David might have mentioned that the hike was not at the working airport but this secondary one, which is not really an airport; maybe a grass landing field for single engines from Cape Cod, but even then.......
