In the spring of 1950, Marcel Pronovost was called up from the minor leagues to play for the Detroit Red Wings during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The 18-year-old defenceman had never seen NHL ice time before, but his performance in the playoffs was so impressive that he took regular turns in the final series against the New York Rangers. That year, Marcel Provonost became the ninth player in history to win a Stanley Cup before playing a single regular-season NHL game.
So began Pronovost’s 65-year career in pro hockey. As a Red Wing he became a star defenceman in Detroit’s golden age, winning three more Stanley Cups between 1952 and 1955, and skating side-by-side with Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, and Terry Sawchuk (who became a lifelong friend). He played a pivotal role in the Toronto Maple Leafs' last Stanley Cup win in 1967. He earned recognition on the NHL's First and Second All-Star Teams. And he has continued to serve the game for decades, becoming one of the few NHLers to have success as a player, a coach, and as a scout.

About the Author
Hockey Hall-of-Famer and 8-time Stanley Cup Champion Marcel Pronovost has spent more than a half-century in the National Hockey League, and in his career has worked or played with with a who's-who of game greats: Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Jack Adams, Punch Imlach, Terry Sawchuk, Johnny Bower, and more. He has served the game as a player, coach, and talent scout. He presently works for the New Jersey Devils and resides in Windsor, Ontario.
Currently the sports columnist for the Windsor Star, Bob Duff has covered the NHL since 1988 and is a contributor to The Hockey News, MSNBC.com, and Faceoff.com. Duff's other book credits include: The China Wall: The Timeless Legend of Johnny Bower, Hockey Dynasties: Bluelines and Bloodlines, Nine: Salute to Mr. Hockey, On the Wing: A History of the Windsor Spitfires, and The Hockey Hall of Fame Book of Goalies. Duff lives in LaSalle, Ontario, with his wife Shira and daughter Cecilia.

He's Lived A Full Life Devoted to Hockey

Marcel Pronovost has been involved in hockey since he was a child in Quebec from a family of 12 children, 9 boys and 3 girls. The book is an over-sized paperback of 191 pages and contains numerous photographs of his entire career most notably with the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. His hears spent with the Red Wings took place during those five Stanley cup winning seasons with the Production Line of Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, and Alex Delvecchio. The book contains interesting anecdotes about several of his teammates including his close friendship with the late Terry Sawchuk. I found it interesting that Marcel Pronovost had a good relationship with Maple Leaf coach Punch Imlach since some other books I have recently read have found him difficult to get along with.
One drawback, at least to me, was a lack of naming the individuals in team pictures. Only two or three players would be named and I would have liked to know others who I have heard of but didn't recognize due to my very casual interest in hockey during this time period. If you are a Detroit Red Wings' fan and interested in their glory years of the 1950s I would think this book would be of special interest to you.

A solid retrospective on an amazing career in hockey before during and after the NHL , I knew very little of Pronovost before reading this . It was interesting to see through his eyes the changing world of hockey.
